Wisconsin Company To Implant Microchips In Employees
2017-07-24
[ABC] A Wisconsin company is about to become the first in the U.S. to offer microchip implants to its employees.

Yes, you read that right. Microchip implants.

"It's the next thing that's inevitably going to happen, and we want to be a part of it," Three Square Market Chief Executive Officer Todd Westby said.

The company designs software for break room markets that are commonly found in office complexes. Just as people are able to purchase items at the market using phones, Westby wants to do the sam thing using a microchip implanted inside a person's hand.

"We'll come up, scan the item," he explained, while showing how the process will work at an actual break room market kiosk. "We'll hit pay with a credit card, and it's asking to swipe my proximity payment now. I'll hold my hand up, just like my cell phone, and it'll pay for my product."

More than 50 Three Square Market employees are having the devices implanted starting next week. Each chip is about the size of a single grain of rice. Along with purchasing market kiosk items, employees will be albe to use the chip to get into the front door and log onto their computers.

Each chip costs $300 and the company is picking up the tab. They're implanted between a person's thumb and forefinger. Westby added the data is both encrypted and secure.

"There's no GPS tracking at all," he said.

#17  Voluntary... until it isn't and its required to get in the door.

#16  One would have to be incredibly naive to think that taking the implant is a sensible way to "buy snacks at work".

#15  Why do I keep flashing onto pointy haired bosses and Catbert?

I actually heard about this at our work (SAP) outing 20 years ago, but they were talking about wearing a ring. Led to the expected ribaldry.

#14  First they will chip the incarcerated felons, then they will chip the hospital patients, then they will chip the military, and finally, since "everybody else is...", they will chip everybody...

#12  It is one thing if this is voluntary. Quite another when it becomes mandatory.

#11  Employees who need a free lunch,
Should just use a biopsy punch.
We'll save on insurance,
So, for your forbearance...
Um, that'd be great... thanks a bunch.

#10  Better get the chip out quickly, Commodore Frank! Those portable hands ripen quickly, and may cause problems for you at checkout. Just sayin'

#9  So, if I remove my coworker's hand, I can get chips and snacks...free!

#8  Too ripe for abuse, IMHO. I'll stick with a credit card for online and cash for local, thanks.

#7  Yes, Houston, the eagle has landed.
These chickens, so proud to be banded,
Should get plucked outta line
And forbidden to dine,
Then cluck off to the henhouse one-handed.

Also... wow, a boat-burning and a shooting star realtime Crinnie-storm, all in one day!
