Ivory coast man facing expulsion stabs bus driver in Italy
29 July
[ABC News] A man from the Ivory Coast who faced expulsion from Italy for previous aggressive behavior stabbed a public transit bus driver Saturday in the Tuscan city of Siena, causing a serious injury, police said. Police said the man retrieved a knife from a home for asylum-seekers where he previously resided after an apparent argument with the bus driver at the end of the line. He returned to stab the driver twice in the stomach and once in the arm. The driver was in serious, but not life-threatening, condition, police said.

The man was known to authorities for previous aggressive behavior and had lost the status of asylum-seeker, police said. He was being housed by a Catholic charity pending his expulsion.

Neighbors who came to the driver's aid alerted police, who shot the attacker in the leg after he turned his attack on them.

Movie releases reflect growing German ambivalence towards refugees
27 July
[TheLocal.de] Last year the biggest summer film release was a feel-good comedy about a refugee living with a German family. This year the theme is still refugees, but the mood is much darker.

But Mareike Geiling, a co-founder of Refugees Welcome, admitted that a flood of goodwill towards the newcomers in 2015 has faded. From offers in the hundreds a month during the peak of the crisis, the number of flatshare proposals has dropped to about a dozen a month.

"People were open to all sorts of people in the beginning. Now they are increasingly picky, sometimes even racist," she said, noting that some are only willing to host women or Christians.

"Things have completely changed. We were talking about the 'welcome culture' in 2015. That no longer exists today," warned Geiling.

Palestinian gets life sentence in Austria for inciting killings of Jews
24 July
[IsraelTimes] An Austrian jury has convicted a Paleostinian man on terrorism-related charges for inciting fellow Death Eaters to kill Jews in Jerusalem.

The 27-year old man -- unnamed due to Austrian privacy laws -- also was found guilty on Monday of belonging to a terrorist organization due to his affiliation with Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",, the Paleostinian terror group that has ruled Gazoo since seizing it in 2007. He was sentenced to life in prison.

The six-member jury delivered its verdict after prosecutors presented evidence that the man called on others through social media to kill victims in Jerusalem. They cited his statements expressing pride in being a Hamas member, and noted that he had served a nine-year prison sentence in Israel for terror acts against the Jewish state.

France must build more migrant centres, rights watchdog says

[TheLocal.fr] France must build more migrant centres, rights watchdog says
Former government minister Jacques Toubon, the head of the Defenseur des Droits (Protector of Rights) body, made the claim as he visited a humanitarian centre for migrants in the La Chapelle area of northern Paris.

More than 2,800 people were evacuated earlier this month from a makeshift camp that sprung up around the centre, but a new camp is already forming. French authorities have cleared makeshift migrant tent camps in Paris more than 30 times since 2015.

President Emmanuel Macron's government last week announced plans to create more than 12,000 places in reception centres for asylum seekers and refugees by 2019.

Swiss asylum requests at lowest level for seven years
20 July
[The Local.ch] The number of requests lodged in the first six months of the year – 9,123 – was lower than at any time since 2010, the Swiss migration office (SEM) reported on Wednesday. The highest number of requests made in Switzerland came from Eritreans, followed by Syrians, Afghans, Somalians and Sri Lankans.

The situation in Switzerland contrasts sharply with that in Italy, which has seen a big jump in migrant numbers.

The SEM said Switzerland was not the primary destination of most of those seeking to migrate to western Europe.

Given the uncertainty over the situation in conflict zones, the government is continuing to plan for 24,500 asylum applications this year, although the real figure could be below 20,000. Last December the SEM issued figures showing that more than 25,000 people had lodged requests for asylum in 2016. In 2015 the figure was close to 35,000.
