US special forces, Turkey-led rebels exchange blows in north Aleppo |
2017-08-30 |
[AlMasdar] According to CNN reports, US special forces troops and Turkey-backed militants have engaged each other in northern Aleppo Governorate. Reports say that the firefights took place near the strategic town of Manbij in countryside controlled by the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). No casualties have been observed on the side of US special forces. Furthermore, representatives of the US-led anti-ISIS coalition have directed a formal complaint towards the Ankara government regarding the event. At this point, it is not clear which side initiated the firefight. VIDEO: Kurdish forces in Afrin hit by rebel artillery barrage [AlMasdar] Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) militants have recently carried out a heavy bombardment of the Kurdish People Protection Unit’s (YPG) lines in the Afrin region of northern Aleppo Governorate in a clear attempt to harass their forward-most positions. The FSA used a number of 81-mm medium mortars in the attack coupled with a drone to observe shell impacts, assess battle damage and adjust fire accordingly. Pro-rebel media claims that FSA mortar units scored at least one direct hit on a Kurdish position and indeed it appears that (at the end of the video) a militant shell hits an elevated YPG fortification. Artillery duels between the YPG and Turkey-backed rebels in northern Aleppo are an almost daily event now. |
