two people in connection with the incident. The suspects ‐ Shahriar and Chanchal ‐ are cousins of local upazila parishad member Delowar Hossain.

The incident occurred at the Kachua village under Assasuni upazila in the early hours of Thursday.

Shankar Ghosh, a resident of the village, told the Dhaka Tribune that the local BCL unit President Ujjal Ghosh and his supporters had an ongoing dispute with Delowar, a member of the Satkhira upazila parishad, and his nephews Shubho and Shaon, over the formation of a BCL ward committee.

Delowar, accompanied by his supporters, reportedly attacked Ujjal at his residence on Wednesday night, leaving at least 10 people injured.

During the attack, the culprits allegedly desecrated the idols of Vishnu, Durga and Kartikeya at the Kachua Sarbojanin Durga Temple.

Local UP member Angur Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: "I visited the scene of the incident on Thursday morning and found that some idols had been desecrated. Several people were also injured. The incident might have been caused by internal disputes."

Another eyewitness, Sohrab Hossain, said: "I saw Delowar Hossain’s nephews Shubho and his brother Shaon attacking Ujjal Ghosh and his supporters on Wednesday night. The locals broke up the fight."

"Later that night, Ujjal Ghosh and his supporters attacked Shuvo and Shaon. I do not know who is responsible for desecrating the idols," he added.

When approached for comment, Delwar said: "I was getting a haircut at the Gunakarkati Market on Wednesday. My nephews came to take me home. A number of youths hurled abuses at me as I was passing through the Kachua Ghosh neighbourhood. My nephews protested their insults and an altercation turned into a scuffle."

"The rumours about idols being desecrated are not true. The scuffle occurred on the road and not in anyone’s home. They are framing me," he said.

Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Assasuni cop shoppe Shahidul Islam confirmed that three idols have been desecrated and an investigation has been launched over the incident.
