| Thousands in Pakistan protest 'genocide' of Rohingya Muslims |

| [DAWN] Thousands of protesters erupted into the streets of major cities on Friday to condemn a crackdown on Rohingya Moslems in Myanmar, with many carrying placards that read, "Shame on Aung San Suu Kyi". The largely peaceful rallies were spearheaded by the Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... (JI), but other political parties and members of the civil society also joined in. Political leaders, including JI chief Sirajul Haq ...current head of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. Siraj was born in 1962 and entered politics shortly after that... , called for an end to the "genocide" of the Rohingya and for Pakistain to break off relations with the government in Myanmar. The government has previously expressed "deep anguish" at the violence. Many protesters also slammed Suu Kyi, Myanmar's de facto leader, over her silence. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has faced criticism for failing to condemn the violence, leaving her global reputation in tatters. |
