Mexico rescinds Texas aid offer after huge quake
2017-09-12
[CNBC] Mexico has withdrawn its offer to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas due to demands on its emergency services from a massive earthquake that struck late last week, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Mexico's government offered to send food, beds, generators, mobile kitchens as well as doctors after torrential rains from Harvey flooded vast parts of Houston.

But the earthquake that struck southern Mexico on Thursday killed at least 96 people and left some 2.5 million people in need of aid. Hurricane Katia also hit the Gulf state of Veracruz this weekend and heavy rains have stretched emergency services.

"Given these circumstance, the Mexican government will channel all available logistical support to serve the families and communities affected in the national territory," the foreign ministry statement said.
It's good the government is being realistic about limited resources, prioritizing its own citizenry instead of pride.

#6  Used to be Guatemala, but the Mexican cops tend to beat the crap out of them.

#4  Also, they're gonna need lots of cheap labor at home. I wonder where they might get some?

#3  ...abating multi-generational corruption makes our job easier when dealing with fate. Theirs, not so much. SKorea is the size of Kansas, a quarter of the population of Mexico, lacking the blessings of a natural abundance of resources and arable land. In 1953, SKorea's GDP was near zero having suffered the conflict there for 3 years. Go look at the ranking of nations by GDP and compare the two. Last time I checked, one was 12th and one was 13th. Self inflicted wound.

#2  I assure you they need help. 2.6 million needing assistance and climbing.
Not that we are in any different basket.

#1  Mexico is facing a PR nightmare by walking away because a lot of the people who suffered the most due to Harvey are ethnic Mexicans. Many of the marginal properties that flooded were owned or rented by Mexican citizens. The viral video of men forming a human chain to rescue an elderly man? Those were Mexicans. Mexico is always publicly preening about its concern for the diaspora, but shows her true colors when times get tough. If we won't or can't deport the illegals, then they have to be assimilated.
