Idlib: massing ex-ISIS and a mysterious assassination

Former ISIS militants mass in Idlib to slip across the border into Turkey

[AlMasdar] According to a report by The Guardian, hundreds of ISIS defectors have made it from Syria across the heavily patrolled Ottoman Turkish border after paying smugglers upwards of 2,000$ for completing their journey.

in early September. Abu Saad, a Saudi national who also fled Syria but in late August, told the Guardian that as many as 300 former ISIS members, many of them Saudis, have established a community north of Idlib city, which is now dominated by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS/Syrian al-Qaeda).

In recent months, HTS has cracked down on ISIS sleeper cells and rival rebel groups. Effectively, many former ISIS members no longer feel safe in Idlib province.

ISIS has not had an organised presence in the governorate since early 2014 when it was ousted by a rebel assault that saw its members flee to eastern and northern Syria.

Senior jihadi commander assassinated in Syria’s Idlib

[AlMasdar] A high-ranking commander of the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was mysteriously assassinated in the northwestern province of Idlib as tensions rise amongst the jihadi group.

Abu Mohammed al-Sharie, a Saudi national who holds a senior position in HTS, was left dead with a bullet in his head in the city of Saraqib, located to the east of the historic provincial capital.

This comes two days after the notorious Saudi holy man Abdullah al-Muhaysini resigned as the group’s religious judge, citing transgressions against its Shariah Committee and his being unable to change "errors" he witnessed and bloodshed and infighting.

Following the resignation, several factions affiliated with the al-Qaeda-linked organization defected, marking a mass blow to what is widely considered the strongest and most well-organized rebel group in the war-torn Syria.
