| Russia deploys MIG-29smt fighter jet to Syria for the first time |

| [AlMasdar] The Russian Aerospace Forces have deployed their elite MIG-29smt fighter jets to the Syrian frontier for the first time during this seven year long conflict. According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian Aerospace Forces will begin using the MIG-29smt in Syria to conduct missions against terrorist groups inside the country. Despite already having the powerful Su-30 and Su-35 fighters jets at the Hmaymim Airbase in southeast Latakia, the Russian Ministry of Defense made the odd decision to deploy the MIG-29smt to Syria. The deployment of these jets likely has to do with the Israeli Air Force’s attack on the Tartous Governorate city of Masyaf, which has a large presence of Russian military personnel. The MIG-29smt possesses air-to-air missiles that can score precise hits on enemy aircraft. |

| #4 This probably has more to do with potential aircraft sales: The Mig-29smt is equipped with high-precision air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons. It incorporates enhanced cockpit and avionics, additional fuel tanks, upgraded engine, and increased weapons carriage capacity. The first flight of the prototype was in April 1998. Serial production of the fighter aircraft began in 2004. The Algerian Military rejected the delivery of 28 Mig-29smt and cancelled the contract in 2008 due to allegations of low-quality manufacturing. |
