According to a statement released by the Kremlin on Saturday, Putin told Trump that "a constructive Russian-American dialogue is especially needed to strengthen strategic stability in the world."
He also noted that "mutual respect" should be "a base to develop relations" between the two nations.
"This would allow us to move towards building pragmatic cooperation, orientated on the long term," it added.
Putin also sent messages to other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel
