, which are backed by Ottoman Turkish armed forces, took control of the centre of Afrin this morning at 8:30 am (0530 GMT)," Erdogan said, adding that de-mining operations were under way.

's operation Olive Branch, a deadly ground and air offensive launched on January 20 with the aim of ousting the People's Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia group.

Erdogan said a "large number" of Kurdish fighters had "fled with their tails between their legs". He added Ottoman Turkish special forces had deployed in the city.

News of Afrin's capture was also confirmed by the Ottoman Turkish military, which released a statement saying the city centre was "under control".

"Search operations to locate mines and other explosives are under way," it said.

On Twitter, the military posted a video of a soldier putting a Ottoman Turkish flag on a balcony.

"Now the Ottoman Turkish flag will fly over there! The flag of the Free Syrian Army will fly over there!" said Erdogan who was speaking at a ceremony marking the battle to open the Dardanelles during World War I.

As the Ottoman Turkish operation intensified, more than 200,000 civilians fled the Kurdish-majority city in less than three days and dozens have been killed in the area, according to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The FSA was one of the earliers Syrian rebel organizations, founded in 2011, but quickly lost relevance in the ensuing conflict. It subsequently all but disappeared to the background until 2016, when the FSA was chosen as The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

#3  question for Erdogan is will Turkey keep their military in Afrin for months or years

if they do this they will be losing men, equipment and money each month

but if they don't, the Kurds will drive their puppets out pretty fast
