Israeli forces kill Palestinian journalist covering Gaza rally
2018-04-08
[Al Jazeera] A Paleostinian journalist shot by Israeli forces during a mass demonstration along the Gazoo border has died of his wounds.

Yaser Murtaja, a photographer with the Gazoo-based Ain Media agency, was shot in the stomach in Khuza'a in the south of the Gazoo Strip on Friday, according to the Paleostinian health ministry.

Murtaja, 30, was hit despite wearing a blue flak jacket marked with the word "press", indicating he was a journalist.

Hosam Salem, a photographer at the scene of the incident, told Al Jazeera on Friday that he witnessed Murtaja drop to the ground after being shot by Israeli forces.

"Yaser was filming with his camera next to me when we heard the sound of gunfire," Salem said. "He just fell on the ground and said, 'I've been shot, I've been shot.'"

The Paleostinian Journalists Syndicate said seven other news hounds were maimed in Friday's protest, in what they described as "deliberate crimes committed by the Israeli army".
Ynet adds:
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Saturday addressed the death of a Paleostinian journalist who was maimed during festivities on the Gazoo border the previous day, arguing that "Anyone who operates multirotor drones over IDF soldiers needs to understand he is endangering himself."

"What we saw over the past two weeks is a parade of terrorism," Lieberman said during Mimouna celebrations in Ashkelon. "Members of Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",'s military wing, dressed as civilians, tried to hurt Israel's citizens and its illusory sovereignty, and we won't allow it."

"We saw dozens of cases in which Hamas gunnies used ambulances, dressed up as Red Islamic Thingy workers, and dressed up as journalists," he continued. "We won't take any risks."

Journalist Yaser Murtaja, 30, worked for several Paleostinian media bodies, including Ain Media, a local production company providing materials for foreign press services, including drone footage of the strip. He was a supporter of Hamas
Oh? That puts a different complexion on things.
