After alleged Iranian barrage, Israel launches massive counterattack in Syria
2018-05-10
[TIMESOFISRAEL] Some 20 rockets were fired at Israeli military bases by Iranian forces from southern Syria just after midnight on Thursday, sparking the largest ever direct clash between Jerusalem and Tehran, with Israeli jets targeting numerous Iranian-controlled sites across Syria.

The Israeli army said the initial missile barrage was carried out by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Forces. This appeared to be the first time that Israel attributed an attack directly to Iran, which generally operates through proxies.

Some of the incoming missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system, the army said. There were no reports of Israeli casualties in the attack. An IDF spokesperson said damage was caused to Israeli military bases, but that it was "limited."

In response, Israel launched an extensive retaliatory campaign, striking suspected Iranian bases throughout Syria for hours following the initial Iranian bombardment, an Israeli military spokesperson said, warning Syrian dictator Bashir al-Assad not to get involved.

"The Israel Defense Forces is taking action at this moment against Iranian targets in Syria. Any Syrian involvement against this move will be met with the utmost seriousness," wrote Avichay Adraee, the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson, on Twitter.

#18  Well said, Ulaigum Ebbineng7056. With sites like Rantburg around, anyone who wants to be well informed can be. Like democracy itself it’s a dreadful system, better than which has never existed.

#17  bb,

This is the new network news (aka TCPIP). The network is the internet (TCP Internet Protocol). The new receiver end point is the web browser. The sender is a website sitting on a web server.

The US MSM is now just a fake news propaganda tool for nefarious sources.

Rantburg is a work around for the rest of us and a pain for the fake news talking heads.

#16  Another reason why Rantburg rocks. If I want to learn about world events, I sure as hell won't find it in a national paper. Thanks as always

#15  #9 - If the Iranians or Bezbies think embedding Hezbies with Quds or IRGC will stop the attacks, they're BOTH gonna be disappointed

#14  Who holds the press responsible for its failure?

In the 'old' days, there were no corporations to cover losses. You PO'd the locals, you went out of business. Maybe there's a idea in there concerning corporate laws and taxes (as in loss write offs).

#12  What was that old saying? A Free Press is the Fourth Pillar of Democracy? Maybe that is why our democracy is rotting away so badly. The checks and balances hold the 3 branches of government responsible to each other.

Who holds the press responsible for its failure?

#11  Its amazing how much more informed i can be about issues foreign and domestically from the UK news

Most of it is disparaging of the colonies. Something of a national hobby.

#10  JohnQC - its funny you mention that. We just had that conversation last week at my work. Its amazing how much more informed i can be about issues foreign and domestically from the UK news - even their "tabloid" press provides better detail.

#9  at first analysis it seems Israel tried to attack only IRG places and leave Hezbollah assets alone, although any Hezb guys in the IRG assets would have been killed or injured

I don't think there is much chance of Hezb formally splitting from Iran since Hezb is dependent on Iran funds but there might be a soft sort of split

#7  As an aside, have you noticed how Brit papers have much more info/news than US even if the story is in the US. More evidence that the US news media has morphed into the entertainment sector - not even reaching the status of "infomercial"

#2  The strikes last night were carried out after rockets were shot by an Iranian Qods force at frontline IDF posts in the Golan Heights. Nobody was injured in the Iranian attacks, no damage was caused and no missiles exploded in Israeli territory.

Israel attacks more than 50 Iranian targets in Syria after Iran targets Israeli bases

Now waiting for round 2.
