According to police, the suspects ‐ ages 26 to 41 ‐ disturbed the public order when they called for support and solidarity with the Gazoo-based terror group during Friday afternoon prayers. During overnight raids, security forces seized flags and other materials connected to the incident on the Temple Mount, police said. The suspects were questioned by police and scheduled to appear later in the day before a court. Police said they would continue to ensure Moslems are able to pray respectably at the Jerusalem holy site during Ramadan, but will "respond to any incidents of disturbances or illegal protests." On Friday, the army said an estimated 87,000 Paleostinians from the West Bank traveled to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers. It also said 8,000 Paleostinians prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the southern West Bank city of Hebron. Ramadan, which is often a period of heightened tensions, this year comes during the ongoing weekly "March of Return" festivities on the Gazoo border. |
