Cities demand Trump administration act on Tijuana River pollution that fouls San Diego County beaches |
2018-08-15 |
[LATimes] San Diego County cities are preparing to go head-to-head with the federal government this week in a legal battle that could force the Trump administration to plug sewage spilling from Tijuana. Local officials filed the lawsuit in March after demanding for more than a year that federal infrastructure along the border be beefed up to ensure that flows from Mexico are captured before they foul San Diego County wetlands and beaches. On Monday, a federal court judge will hear a motion to dismiss the case filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is defending the International Boundary and Water Commission, or IBWC. |

#17 When I was at Hilltop High, we referred to IB as Venereal Beach. Such genius |

#15 theoretically we are a "sanctuary city", however ICE, DHS, and CBP have access to prisoners and it's really a non-issue |

#13 Foreign aid to Mexico should be zero, with heavy taxes on ‘remittances’. |

#12 g(r)omgoru, San Diego built a wall long before Trump got the idea. I don't know if we are a sanctuary city or not but I doubt it. That sort of crazy usually comes from Los Angeles or the San Francisco area. |

#11 Are these the same cities who decided that federal immigration laws do not apply to them? |

#9 IIRC the sewage treatment was turned off in response to Trump's winning the election. The Mexicans are making a point. Cutting a little foreign aid might be persuasive. |

#8 And Raj, Imperial Beach never was a garden spot. I guess at one time it could have been, you know, before people moved there. North of IB, the Silver Strand and Coronado are very nice but often polluted by Tijuana sewage. I don't live anywhere near any of those places. |

#7 Well, yes Clem, I was about to suggest something along those lines myself. IIRC, US foreign aid to Mexico amounts to about half a billion dollars a year. Trump should tell them they can either use whatever it takes of that money to properly treat Tijuana's sewage or else they won't get another penny. |

#6 Put it in the revised NAFTA that Mexico has a timeframe to fix it or there are penalties. |

#5 Air burst nuke would solve a lot of those problems. Just sayin'. |

#4 They're literally shitting on our shores. And here I thought calling them illegal immigrants was verboten. |

#3 All Trump's fault and not a word about how Mexico can't clean their own filth. They're literally shitting on our shores. |
