[Ynet] A mentally ill North Carolina man who the government for years fought to prosecute as an example to others considering joining holy warrior fighters in Syria is pleading guilty.
Basit Sheikh's
plea bargain disclosed in a Raleigh federal courtroom Wednesday would see the 34-year-old released from prison in two years or less. His father says Sheikh would return to his family's home in suburban Cary after release.
The report from 2013 on the original charges of this Pakistani permanent resident can be seen here. He originally faced a maximum sentence of 15 years and fines up to $250,000. That he is being sentenced to a little more than time served suggests a certain weakness in fhe Obama-era case. |
