Exclusive: Rod Rosenstein is resigning | |
2018-09-24 | |
[Axios] Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has verbally resigned to Chief of Staff John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by President Trump, according to a source with direct knowledge. Per a second source with direct knowledge: "He’s expecting to be fired," so he plans to step down. Background: Rosenstein talked last year about invoking the 25th Amendment and wearing a wire during Trump meetings, the N.Y. Times' Adam Goldman and Michael S. Schmidt reported last week. He denied both allegations.

#27 Yah. Shoots himself. In the back of his head. Twice. Just to be sure. |

#26 Maybe he plans to take the old fashioned way out, the 'honorable' way. Will he be found dead at his desk tomorrow? Or in Fort Marcy Park with two bullet wounds to the back of his head? He's involved in the Clinton emails...he might need to be worried. |

#16 Maybe not. Update: The Wall Street Journal’s take sounds more like a firing, given that discussions were taking place “all weekend” at the White House: Mr. Rosenstein has not submitted his resignation, the person said. The situation remained fluid, however, as another person familiar with the matter said Mr. Rosenstein is expected to resign, and that discussions have been underway about his departure all weekend. … Mr. Rosenstein had disputed those assertions on Friday. In a statement released that day, he said, “I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false.” |

#14 Given the unreliability of the leaks and smears that pass for news nowadays, I'll believe it after it happens. |

#13 The Justice Department's rules of succession dictate that Solicitor General Noel Francisco would be next in line to take over for Rosenstein. Rules of succession???? What is this, a royal family? Why can't DoJ solicit resumes from both outside and inside the government and select the best candidate? |

#12 Trump just described Rosenstein as a weasel - sounds about right; he's got the look. |

#8 My regard for Rosenstein just went up substantially; his resignation, even if forced, is not a firing, and will be less usable as an 'obstruction of justice' tool against Trump. |

#5 The Justice Department's rules of succession dictate that Solicitor General Noel Francisco would be next in line to take over for Rosenstein. Francisco's track record as a lawyer mirrors Trump's rhetoric against intelligence authorities, with cases that include rebukes of the FBI and a defense of executive authority. Hopefully. |
