‘Hee Haw’ and country music star Roy Clark dead 85
2018-11-16
[PAGESIX] Roy Clark, the popular country music singer-guitarist who co-hosted the long-running sketch/variety series “Hee Haw” with Buck Owens, died today of pneumonia complications at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 85.

CBS launched “Hee Haw” in summer 1969 as country music’s answer to Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In.” Weaving performances by the genre’s top stars with surprise cameos and down-home comedy skits loaded with catchphrases, it lasted three seasons on the network before moving to first-run syndication in 1971 — where it aired for 22 more years.

As a musician, he had 50 singles hit Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart from 1963 to 1984, including nine top 10s and the No. 1 hit “Come Live with Me” in 1973. He personified “pickin’ ‘n’ grinnin’,” having started playing banjo and mandolin before he picked up a guitar.

#4  Enjoyed that show even when it was tooth-grindingly corny. RIP to a real showman.

#1  RIP. I was always impressed when he dropped the comedian shtick and the professional musician emerged.... A true professional through and through. My Dad, who tried to play the guitar in an amateur sort of way always tuned in to Hee Haw back in the day to watch and listen to the guitar picken'.
