2019-01-18
[Rudaw] ERBIL, Kurdistan Region ‐ One person was killed and three others maimed, possibly by a remnant from the Iran-Iraqi war in Soran, Erbil province on Wednesday.

"Today, due to a munitions fragment, a person named Mohammed Khidir, aged 53, was killed in the village of Sitkan in Soran," read a statement from the Erbil Mines Affairs Department.

Three other people were maimed in the same incident and rushed to hospital in Erbil.

The cause of the accident is unclear, the statement added, but said remnants from the war spread throughout the mountainous region are a danger.

"Every year, many citizens become victims for various reasons due to war debris," it said.

The war between Iran and Iraq ended on August 20, 1988, but is still claiming lives.
