| Bangla court sentences five ‘war criminals’ to death |

| [DAWN] A Bangladesh court sentenced five men to death in absentia for atrocities perpetrated during the war in 1971, prosecutors said on Thursday. A special court said the runaways were found guilty of serial abuses during the war. Critics say the so-called International Crimes Tribunal, which has no international oversight, is politically motivated and used to target the opposition. "They were charged with murder, abduction, looting, arson and rape in Netrokona in 1971," prosecutor M.R. Badol said. Prosecutors said the four accused were connected to Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... , the largest Islamist party in Bangladesh and one allied to the country’s main opposition party. |
