The numbers behind the 11-day Israel-Hamas fighting
2021-05-21
[IsraelTimes] After 11 days of rocket attacks and Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s, Israel and the Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, terror group have agreed to stop the fighting. Here are some numbers summarizing Operation Guardian of the Wall:

Around 4,000 rockets were fired by Paleostinian terror groups at Israeli cities, communities and army bases, hundreds of which landed inside the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip. The Israel Defense Forces says 90% of the rockets aimed at populated areas in Israel were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

12 people were killed in Israel, including nine Israelis and three foreign workers — two from Thailand, one from India. Two of the fatalities died of injuries sustained during a rush to a bomb shelter, while the rest died from a direct rocket impact or shrapnel. Additionally, over 350 people were maimed.

On the Paleostinian side, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry has given a corpse count of 232, including more than 66 minors, and more than 1,600 injured in thousands of Israeli airstrikes. But some analysts suspect that is an undercount and that more Hamas and Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
fighters have been killed. The IDF says it has killed 225 members of terror groups.

The Israel military also says some of the Gaza civilian fatalities were killed by the terror groups’ own rockets falling short and exploding in Gaza.

#7   but likely large, number of miners, in the collapsed tunnels.

Many of the miners in Gaza are minors — small bodies need less space to dig, and they command smaller paychecks. I remember posting the story here some years ago.

And an unknown, but likely large, number of miners, in the collapsed tunnels.

#5  RS brings up an interesting point

in the 2014 conflict (which was about 40 days), Hamas and PIJ sent about 4000 rockets and only about 40 failed to clear the Gaza border

in the 2020 conflict (11 day), they sent about 3500 rockets with about 400 failing to clear

It is astounding to see the fail rate increase like this. There are lots of possible non exclusive reasons for this and it will keep the analysts busy for quite a while.

#4  ^Well, it's the same as structural racism being the ultimate clause of black on black violence.

#2  what is more difficult to determine is the damage to Hamas's infrastructure

back in 2014, Israel knocked out several dozen command and training facilities and damaged a few dozen tunnel entrances

although not known for sure, the damage to the tunnels this time is probably an order of magnitude more severe than back in 2014 while the damage to command and training facilities is probably about the same

#1  back in 2014 it took over a year to get reliable estimates of Gaza casualties.

In that conflict about 1000 Gaza fighters, mostly Hamas but also PIJ and others died, about the same number of civilians and several hundred who could reasonably be called civilians assisting fighters;
subsequent to the cease fire, Hamas executed several dozen alleging spying for Israel

In that conflict Israel lost about 70 fighters and about half a dozen civilians.
