$1.19 billion worth of marijuana seized in massive drug bust in California
2021-07-09
[CBSNEWS] Authorities in Southern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, have seized more than 16 tons of marijuana worth an estimated $1.19 billion, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said Wednesday. The 10-day sting is the largest eradication of illegal marijuana cultivations in the history of the department.

The operation, which began on June 8, resulted in 22 felony arrests, 109 misdemeanor arrests, and 19 arrests from water theft enforcement teams, officials said. More than 200 locations were served with search warrants. Nearly 375,000 marijuana plants and 33,480 pounds of harvested marijuana were seized, along with 65 vehicles, 180 animals and $28,000.

Officials say they believe international cartels are behind the illegal large-scale marijuana farms.

#12   You guys missed out on the "Mexican cartel" part of this report. They've been threatening local farmers lately and using up about all the available water.

Street retail for a lb of good weed's more like $4,000. Just sayin'...

#9  They appear to be expanding their 'human trafficking' market share.

Well, that and Avocados.

#8  The California government made so many hoops to jump through to grow, purchase and possess legal weed, that the black market is still profitable. (by a wide margin too)

When the California government did not get its cut of the money, they got annoyed and decided to get their cut.

#3  Have to question that topline number.

$1,190,000,000 / (16 tons * 2,000 lb/ton) = $37,187.5 per lb
Yeah, $37K seems a bit spendy for a pound of weed. Maybe that is the street value based on twisting it all up and selling it by the joint.

The amusing part is that marijuana - medical and recreational - is legal in Cali. But due to licensing, fees, taxes, regulations, and bureaucratic sloth, the illegal market is still alive and well.
