Caterpillar moving HQ from Illinois to Texas
2022-06-15
[MSN] Caterpillar Inc. said Tuesday it will move its global headquarters from Illinois to an existing divisional office in Irving, Texas, in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, in another blow to the Chicago area, which last month lost the Boeing Co. headquarters.

The move is "in the best strategic interest of the company," Chief Executive Jim Umpleby said in a statement. The heavy-machinery maker has had a presence in Texas since the 1960s, it said.

Even with the move, Illinois has the largest concentration of Caterpillar employees anywhere in the world, the company said. The headquarters was historically in downstate Peoria, Ill., before a move to the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, in 2017.

Caterpillar said it will begin the relocation this year, without proving further details.

Boeing in May said it was moving its global headquarters to Arlington, Va., outside Washington, D.C., promising to keep a "significant presence" in Chicago, where it moved in 2001 from Seattle.

Texas also welcomed Tesla Inc. headquarters last year, with Chief Executive Elon Musk blaming the San Francisco Bay Area’s lack of affordable housing for the move. Tesla was headquartered in Palo Alto, in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Musk had said in 2020 he had moved to Texas, saying that Silicon Valley has had "too much influence in the world."

Shares of Caterpillar fell 0.4% in midday trading Tuesday. The stock has lost about 0.3% so far this year, contrasting with losses of more than 21% for the S&P 500.

#6  Another unusual thing is the cheapest apartments ($800) are the most beautiful and historic while new construction of homes and apartments are every where there also.

#5  Mustang Plaza a.k.a. Williams Square is a very cool place Caterpillar is moving to. New restaurants, The Cork and Pig, The Thirsty Lion, Toyota Music Factory (concerts) Pacific Table (sea food), La Cocina, and the 5 star resort hotel Omni Mandalay with a massive lakeside pool area are just a few fun things within a block of the Caterpillar headquarters. It all sits on a man made lake called Lake Carolyn named after the wife of the ranch owner John Carpenter who owned the area as a huge Ranch years ago. Lake Carolyn has canals and Italian Gondolas rowed by Italian dressed operators through canals and on the lake. Along the canals Quenticerra (the 15th birthday) of hispanic girls is celebrated with them in beautiful Quenticerra dresses on the weekends along the Lake Carolyn canals because of the Spain/Mediterranean architecture is like Spain.

This area of Irving is called Las Colinas (The Colony) and is the home of over 2,000 company headquarters from Xerox to Exxon Mobil, to Citibanc. DFW International Airport is 5 minutes away. There is nothing like Las Colinas in the world.

#4  I do understand the CAT wanting to move out of Deerfield, though.

#3  Peoria is 'downstate' now? Folks in Vandalia or Mt. Vernon might dispute that.

Well I guess it is 40 miles south of I-80.

#2  We now live in an era where software drones unionize.

For some jobs, AI can't get here soon enough.

Given the politic craziness, taxes and the union leadership in the LSD's pockets screw over members in ILL-inois.

I can understand why a right-to-work state (Texas, GA and etc...) are appealing to Manufacturers.

Where a person cannot be denied employment because of membership or non-membership in a labor union or other labor organization.

Don't give me wrong, Unions "once" served a badly needed purpose. But like too many things, it has become politically corrupted and abused for votes.

Many States now have laws that offer the same work environment safety union originally shalt. Supply and demand for skilled workers now sets the pay scale.
