One Day in the Life of the HIMARS Unit in Ukraine
2022-10-11
[Defence UA] The HIMARS missile system has proven itself as an effective weapon in the last three and a half months, having already destroyed hundreds of objects of the russian army, namely warehouses with ammunition, military bases, bridges, crossings, etc.

Last month journalists from The Wall Street Journal managed to gain unique access and communicate with Ukrainian crew of the HIMARS missile system. So, what a typical completion of a combat mission looks like based on this unit.

The crew was tasked with targeting military barracks and a river barge carrying ammunition and tanks at a distance of 50 miles (approximately 80 km).

Six people crammed into the two HIMARS as the commander entered the coordinates into a tablet computer to determine the safest place to launch.

When HIMARS arrives at the launching site, the gunner presses one button to direct the missiles into the sky and another to release them. Overall, it took thirty seconds to launch seven missiles in a row: the missiles had not yet reached the target, and the two missile systems were already returning "to the base".

Ten minutes later, the unit received another task to destroy Soviet missile installations 44 miles (about 70 km) from the base of the unit: a number of missiles were successfully launched to enemy positions.

According to the commander of the unit, Lieutenant Valentyn Koval, in the Kherson direction, HIMARS provides up to 70% of target damage. In particular, four vehicles of his unit destroyed hundreds of russian invaders and "demilitarized" about 20 SAM (surface-to-air missile system) batteries.
