Ukraine: we shot down every Shahed launched on Jan 1 and 2
2023-01-04
From Institute for the Study of War
Ukraine's air force reported on January 1 that Ukrainian air defense forces shot down all 45 Russian Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones that Russia fired at Ukraine on New Year's Eve.

[1] Ukrainian Air Force Spokesman Yuriy Ignat stated on January 1 that Ukrainian forces used the US-provided NASAMS air defense system to shoot down these drones.

[2] The Ukrainian General Staff reported on January 2 that Ukrainian forces intercepted all 39 Shahed-136 drones launched against Ukraine between the night of January 1 and 2.

[3] The Ukrainian General Staff again reported on January 2 that Ukrainian forces shot down all 27 Shahed-136 drones that Russian forces launched against Ukraine on January 2, though it is unclear if this figure includes the previously reported intercepts from the night between January 1 and 2.

#8  Vampireanti-drone using laser homing APKWS rockets is comparable in cost to Iranian drones and works against helicopters and lightly armored ground vehicles. Helicopters w/ gunners are fast enough that they can intercept Iranians drones. In the longer term, fast anti-drone drones will have to intercept them, either armed or by crashing into them (armored or w/ explosives).

#6  I've also seen a video on the Ukrainians using a truck-mounted DShK and a searchlight against the S-136 drones. Seems effective and cheaper than even an old manpad.

Those Shaheds don't fly very fast and you can hear those 2-cycle engines coming from a long ways away.

#5  Also factor in the cost of a Shaheed hitting something important.

A crucial but often neglected part of the calculation. One round of bullet may only cost a dollar but you would spend 100 times that on a bullet-proof vest to save your life.

NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, also known as the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System ) is a distributed and networked short- to medium-range ground-based air defense system began development in the nineteen eighties by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) and Raytheon.

#2  Why? It's not like Ukraine is footing the bill fro the NASAMS.

#1  The cost of a NASAMS air defence system to a Shahed makes me wonder if it is such a victory.
