Homeland Security develops new portable gunshot detection system
2023-01-09
Good for political campaign crowds and church services.
Not much good for the first ones shot.
See Las Vegas concert.

[FoxNews] The Department of Homeland Security said its Science and Technology Directorate has developed a portable gunshot detection system in collaboration with the Massachusetts-based Shooter Detection Systems company.

The department said that the system, known as SDS Outdoor, could provide "critical information about outdoor shooting incidents almost instantaneously to first responders."

The new system is reportedly an enhancement to the commercial, off-the-shelf Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System.

The department said SDS Outdoor uses both the sound and flash of the gunshot to detect and validate each gunshot, in order to drastically reduce false positives.

#8  I was in a city and they had these solar powered device towers w/ microphone clusters setup on the corner. Happened to be a cop on the corner walking his beat. I asked about these device. He admitted, he was bragging, that they were portable gun-shot detecting devices that they were testing.

I thought I had a talker. I asked if the protocol was VOIP? And if they were recording, how long did they keep the recordings. He was not a talker, didnt answer further, and kept his b-line down the street.

#2  Low level, continuous orbiting systems really are the key. No need to limit collection to gunshots.

#1  NOTE: "Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive director Fox Cahn added that there are privacy concerns around such systems,
which "can often be misused as illegal wiretaps." and ...the system falsely reported fireworks and car backfires are active shooters..."

In a study published in 2021, the MacArthur Justice Center found that 89 percent of alerts that ShotSpotter sends to law enforcement
had no evidence of gun-related crimes.
However, ShotSpotter has claimed that its system had a 97 percent accuracy rate.
