| SSC elder welcomes Somaliland’s declaration of Las Anod ceasefire |

| [ShabelleMedia] A leading traditional elder from SSC has welcomed decision by the breakaway region of Somaliland to announce the ceasefire in Las Anod after 6 day fighting. Garad Jama, who is the focal point of the SSC leadership said their side is ready for the cession of the hostility, if Somaliland is committed to silencing the guns and start dialogue. "We are fully ready to the ceasefire and welcome the Somaliland declaration, if the opposing side wants to find the solution through a peaceful way, why we reject it," said Garad Jama. The move comes after the sides engaged in a heavy and deadly shootouts in the northern Somali city that led to the deaths of more than 100 people, most of them unarmed civilians. Somaliland withdrew troops from Las Anod last month after weeks of protests calling for an autonomy, a demand that Hargeisa is defiant to accept as it against its so-called independence. Last month, Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi accused the "enemy of Somaliland" of being behind the conflict in Las Anod, pointing the finger at Puntland ...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... and federal government. This latest fighting also comes amid a dispute over the future status of territories in eastern Somaliland, where a significant number of the locals appear to support unity with Somalia. Meanwhile, ...back at the barn, a little lightbulb figuratively appeared over Bossy's head... Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and international community, including the US called for the cessation of hostilities in Las Anod. He said in a speech the conflict in Las Anod requires a "political solution." The federal government also said it welcomes the decision of the people of Las Anod to support solidarity with Somalia. |
