It's entirely possible that at least part of the idea was that Baldwin and his lawyers would ask for a deal based on the charge...which would indicate that, like most other politicians, those in NM have zero understanding of the Constitution they're sworn to uphold.

#2  the prosecution dropped the firearm enhancement charge to "avoid further litigious distractions by Mr Baldwin and his attorneys".

The enhancement charge was based on a law passed *after* the shooting. We generally frown on such things in America. Dropping is the right thing, but the question remains as to why it was charged in the first place. Publicity?
