#3 A not-uncommon occurrence in the mountains. In troublesome areas, the railroads will install 'slide detector fences'. When they are hit by a slide, the nearby signals go red, and the trains stop, averting disaster. |

#2 When I was working with CSX in 2020 there was a de-railment in Virginia next to a river. I know the engineer and conductor. There were heavy rains a few days before the accident and there was a rockslide that covered the tracks. It was night and they didn't see the rocks until too late to stop. It was an ethanol train. The two engines were the only things that left the tracks. One went in the water but all 4 caught fire. The two crew, one of whom couldn't swim, had to go in the water. Luckily it was only a short distance to the river bank. The engineer never went back to work. It's not always the railroad's fault. |
