Pence: Trump ‘endangered my family’ on January 6, history will hold him accountable
2023-03-13
The annual Gridiron Dinner, where select news people and politicians try hard to be funny.
[IsraelTimes] Ex-US vice president, who hasn’t yet declared 2024 candidacy, issues sharp condemnation of former boss, whom he jokes wouldn’t have known about classified docs found in Bible

Former US vice president Mike Pence on Saturday harshly criticized former US President Donald Trump
...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party...
for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol, widening the rift between the two men as they prepare to battle over the Republican nomination in next year’s election.

"President Trump was wrong," Pence said during remarks at the annual white-tie Gridiron Dinner attended by politicians and journalists. "I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable."

Pence’s remarks were the sharpest condemnation yet from the once-loyal lieutenant who has often shied away from confronting his former boss. Trump has already declared his candidacy. Pence has not, but he’s been laying the groundwork to run.

In the days leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, Trump pressured Pence to overturn US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. The guy who lost Afghanistan, aka Biden's Bungle...
’s election victory as he presided over the ceremonial certification of the results.

Pence refused, and when rioters stormed the Capitol, some chanted that they wanted to "hang Mike Pence."

The House committee that investigated the attack said in its final report that "the President of the United States had riled up a mob that hunted his own Vice President."

With his remarks, Pence solidified his place in a broader debate within the Republican Party over how to view the attack. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
...the GOP house majority whip. He replaces Eric Cantor, who got whupped because his politix are like Kevin McCarthy's...
, for example, recently provided Tucker Carlson with an archive of security camera footage from Jan. 6, which the Fox News host has used to downplay the day’s events and promote conspiracy theories.

"Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace," Pence said in his Gridiron Dinner remarks. "And it mocks decency to portray it any other way."

Trump, meanwhile, has continued to spread lies about his election loss. He’s even spoken in support of the rioters and said he would consider pardoning them if he were reelected.

Speeches at the Gridiron Dinner are usually humorous affairs, where politicians poke fun at each other, and Pence did plenty of that as well.

He joked that Trump’s ego was so fragile, he wanted his vice president to sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" — one of the lines is "did you ever know that you’re my hero?" — during their weekly lunches.

He took another shot at Trump over classified documents.

"I read that some of those classified documents they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president’s Bible," Pence said. "Which proves he had absolutely no idea they were there."

Even before the dinner was over, Pence was facing criticism for his jokes about Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, the first openly gay Cabinet member in US history.

Pence mentioned that, despite travel problems that were plaguing Americans, Buttigieg took "maternity leave" after he and his husband adopted newborn twins.

"Pete is the only person in human history to have a child and everyone else gets post-partum depression," Pence said.

#54  We document only a few of the examples of gender bending here in the U.S., Xyz. The core culture is solid, but the ruling class is doing its best to pervert things in all possible ways.

The core culture in Europe is fairly solid, too, but they as a group they are slower to disbelieve and challenge what they are assured is the way of the future — though much quicker to strike, march, and riot when they do.

#53  Hmm no.
The gender bending is all EU.
The last bastion of sanity is America.
All is lost in Europe

But they certainly won't tell me to gender.

#48  #44 Do the DEI Socialists pretend to care? Are you repared to go to the mat on that one?
Posted by: Rex Mundi   2023-03-13 19:04

#47  What we have now is politicians saying "Bürgerinnen und Bürger" in every sentence, teachers "Schülerinnen und Schüler" in every other one.

In state TV, it's worse. The "glottisschlag" (glottal stop) unknown in the German language until now, is spreading like a fever. So now it's "Bürger:innen" (with : or a * marking a stop).

It can easily get absurd: What's the plural form of "mayor" (of a city)? Bürger:innenmeister:innen?

This is just the beginning. A new law says you can simply chose your gender officially (to be written in your passport) by declaring it to the authorities. No need to do anything else.

Posted by: European Conservative   2023-03-13 18:48

#42  I am shocked. I had no idea Germany gave up using Fräulein for unmarried females as being sexist because there is no equivalent for unmarried men — banned by the West Germany Ministry of the Interior in 1972, while I was still actively studying the language. Nor do I recall my Berlitz tutor mentioning it when we were preparing to move there in 1990.

Posted by: European Conservative   2023-03-13 16:20

#32  I think what everyone is getting at, is that by whatever means and ultimate processes, if they had tried:

1)we would now know what that process is (or was and could tweak it)

2)would not looked like rollovers and early folders when the other players at the table are playing for keeps, and led to easy shoulder shrugging during the Georgia special and in many locations, these last midterms.

Looking at the past 2 years, "But it would shut down the government!" would have been an overwhelmingly positive development. There is no decency in that room to mock.

There's nothing in the 12A and in the Electoral Count Act of 1887 that empowers Pence to do so.
Posted by: European Conservative   2023-03-13 15:40

#29  EC, Pence was not asked to overturn the election. He was asked to follow the process for contested electors.

#26  That’s your opinion EC.
But I do enjoy your take on European events.
Posted by: Xyz   2023-03-13 13:53

#25  The 12A doesn't give the VP that right. And I guess he read up on this fact.

Having the possibility to do something (or not) is not the same as having the power (or the Constitutional right) to do something.
Posted by: European Conservative   2023-03-13 13:12

#24  "For those who believe that the VP has the right to overturn the election... Would you please quote the relevant text in the Constitution?"

I'll play.

The Constitution assigns crafting laws to the Congress. And it follows the Electoral Count Act of 1887 is downstream from this assignment of making laws by the Constitution.

So with that out of the away...

"Would you please quote the relevant text in the Constitution?"

See above.

Is certifying the election in alignment with the Electoral Count Act of 1887, is this 'certification' process largely a ceremonial act?

Is the certification process a binary choice?

Or is the certification process just to give govt the appearance of legitimacy?

Can you legally object to the Electoral Count Act of 1887?

Colloquially, we all have our own definitions of Democracy and a Republic. Which for these legalese word games, it ultimately fails. You can change definitions and hide behind word firewalls, but in the end it ultimately fails because even dogs and monkeys understand when they are cheated.
Posted by: mossomo   2023-03-13 13:11

#23  If Pence hadn’t authenticated the electors votes congress would not have been able to certify the vote. Some say those inactions would have created some kind of crisis. Others say the vote goes to the Supreme Court.

#21  Since we were asking for a look at the _evidence_ and not for the immediate execution of the malefactors, I would presume that Harris would have the right to _present evidence that the process had become corrupt_. Which is all that Pence had said he would himself in the preceeding week.

(I keep trying to post the damn video, but it keeps getting rejected).
Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain   2023-03-13 12:52

#20  Pence is showing his true colors again. He should join the Kerry camp and be trans-party oriented.
Posted by: 49 Pan   2023-03-13 12:45

#19  I have done it. The 12A is very clear about the role of the VP. But I repeat my question: If you think Pence had the right, do you think Harris also has it?

"why does the constitution have a role for him at all?"

Because those who wrote the 12A wanted it this way?
Posted by: European Conservative   2023-03-13 12:43

#18  EC, do your own research. It’s been on this site many times. Pence Election Certification.
Posted by: Xyz   2023-03-13 12:33

#17  If the VP didn't have the right (and the duty!) to _contest_ the election (not overturn it) then why does the constitution have a role for him at all? Why not just say "the secretaries of state will forward their decision and that's final?"
Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain   2023-03-13 12:32

#16  For those who believe that the VP has the right to overturn the election (and Trump has publicly said he wanted Pence to do this):

Would you please quote the relevant text in the Constitution?
And do you believe that Kamala Harris also has this right?

#11  Too many newbies like Trump get elected and start to realize they don't have the knowledge of or control over the way the Swamp and its creatures work.

Another part of that is this - essentially the problem is it's Trump vs. 2 million Federal employees. Granted someome with knowledge of the Swamp would've done better, but I don't know how much better that would have been. I think the solution is to get Trumps (i.e., someone in genuine opposition to the Democrat Party) at all levels of the Swamp / hackerama, but there's some in the House now, and good freakin' luck with that in the Senate.
