Mogadishu Blast: Women Injured Amid Fiery ATMIS Convoy Chaos
2023-04-04
[Garowe] At least three women were maimed in a kaboom that occurred on Monday at the KM4 intersection in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The medical department has confirmed the injuries, though the cause of the earth-shattering kaboom remains unknown.

The incident took place while a convoy of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transitional Mission (ATMIS) was passing through the area. Photos and videos from the scene show that one of the ATMIS vehicles, specifically a supply transport, caught fire at the back.

A police officer, speaking to the media, said, "The women suffered minor injuries because of the car's flames that spread when fuel spilled from the car." The officer did not comment on the cause of the earth-shattering kaboom but emphasized that the police have initiated an investigation. The findings will be shared with the public once available.

No group has grabbed credit for the incident thus far. However,

it is worth noting that al-Shabaab

has previously targeted convoys belonging to ATMIS forces and the soldiers of the federal government of Somalia.

This week, the ATMIS command celebrated its first anniversary since being renamed from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is set to conclude its mission in December 2024.
Shabelle Media adds:
A witness says an explosion was heard on Monday at around 2:00 P.M. local time amid a traffic jam on the main streets that are prone to terror attacks.

Afterward, the AU soldiers fired randomly in all directions without knowing that the IEDs went off from inside their car. Several pedestrians were hurt in the indiscriminate gunfire.

Such incident is rare to happen within AU forces as they are facing the threat of Al-Shabaab, which bombs their bases and wage ambushes using IEDs on supply roads.

Al-Shabaab has stepped up attacks in Mogadishu a show of resurgence since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government launched an offensive against the group in August.
