Almost two months have passed since the attempted armed rebellion by Wagner PMC. Amid the silence of many dignitaries, one of the first people to publicly call on the rebels that day to stop was General from Novosibirsk Sergey Surovikin.
Since then, the military, who did not often appear in the media field, has disappeared from the radar, which subsequently gave rise to many rumors about his whereabouts.
On June 28, several Russian telegram channels reported at once that Surovikin, deputy commander of the joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine, could be detained or even arrested on suspicion of collaborating with the Wagnerites.
However, the very next day, the general’s daughter, Veronica told the Baza telegram channel that this information was nothing more than rumors, and recalled that her father never appeared in the media daily.
“Nothing happened to him, he is at his workplace. He never made any statements every day," the girl said. Against the backdrop of general uncertainty, journalists asked the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov about the whereabouts of Surovikin, but he forwarded it to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which did not comment on this for a month. Peskov also evaded answering the question about Putin's trust in Surovikin.
Viktor Sobolev, former commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army and current member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, commented on this situation.
According to Sobolev, referred to by Moskovsky Komsomolets, General Surovikin was suspended from participating in a special military operation. At the same time, the deputy did not disclose the specific reasons for such a decision.
“I knew him as a decent division commander. Before becoming commander-in-chief of the VKS, he had come a long way. Where he is now, I don’t know, I’m not an investigator,” Sobolev said.
In turn, Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, said on July 12 that Sergei Surovikin was "resting and unavailable."
The next day, the executive secretary of the Public Monitoring Commission of Moscow, Alexei Melnikov, stated that General Surovikin was definitely not in Matrosskaya Tishina, Kremlin Central and SIZO-4.
Western and Ukrainian media regularly write that the general has been arrested and is in prison.
On July 18, Andrei Panferov, vice speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk Region, battalion commander of the Vega battalion, spoke about the general's alleged whereabouts. He suggested that Surovikin continues to participate in the special operation and performs his official duties, but took a "tactical pause" in the information field.
Igor Vechersky, a runologist from Novosibirsk, adheres to the version that the military is busy with work. In an interview with MK in Novosibirsk, he said that he had done a rune alignment and found out that General Surovikin was now busy with work.
