Getting spicy? USMC cancels 248th ball over
2023-11-02
[AmericanMilitaryNews] The announcement of the Marine Corps Ball comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, including the war between Israel and Hamas that started after Hamas terrorists brutally attacked Israel last month. Additionally, the Department of Defense has recorded 27 total attacks against U.S. forces in the Middle East since Oct. 17. On the same day as the cancelation announcement, the Pentagon announced the deployment of 300 additional U.S. troops to the Middle East.

#6  General Kurilla, USA, with a genuine command resume, is based in Tampa. Nov 10th will be a good night to enjoy dinner out there. Pretty sure others around the world will enjoy the evening just like 247 times before!

#5  I would think they have it anyway, just post enough guards to ensure no interruptions....honestly, it takes a special kind of stupid to INTERRUPT the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

#4  This ball, however, is in CENTCOM

You can bet the jarheads in Germany are partying.

#3  ...In mid-1997, I was running deployments for my flight, when I got a call from HQ Air Combat Command.

They asked for a list of all unscheduled TDYs we expected in FY98.

#2  The phrase ‘unforeseen operational commitments’ is a bit disturbing. Don't they have people whose job is to foresee operational commitments. Seems like a handy thing to at least think about.

#1  Getting spicy?

...Not exactly.

The Marines - being Marines - celebrate the ball except under combat or imminent combat conditions, and even then they find a way to at least get some cake or other treats to the guys.

This ball, however, is in CENTCOM - that lovesome spot we know as the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Taking Marines off the line for any reason, and gathering them into one or more easily located spaces would be a massive security and safety risk, all the more so for a service that just observed the anniversary of the Beirut bombing. This was the right call.
