Obama Renames Mt. McKinley 'Denali' Ahead of Alaska Trip

[ABCNEWS.GO] President B.O. has changed the name of Alaska's Mt. McKinley to Denali, the White House announced Sunday, a day before the president is set to visit the state.

"Denali" is the Alaskan Native name for the mountain, which is North America's tallest - and a site of cultural significance to Alaska's native population.

U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell signed the order renaming the mountain on Friday. Obama will officially rename the peak in Anchorage tomorrow, where he will kick off his presidential visit to the 49th state.

The name change follows a longstanding Alaskan effort to re-designate the mountain by its Athabascan name. In 1975 Alaska's governor formally requested that the secretary of the interior work to change the name, following a resolution from the Alaska State Legislature.

Changing the name of a geographic landmark is not appropriate for executive orders. It should be done through a process that has been established for many years. In the former Soviet Union, they changed names of places depending upon the political whims of those in power at the time.

The political whims mean, in this case, renaming stuff that _was_ named in honor of a Unionist soldier who fought to abolish slavery.

Bleah.

#7  My late sister was involved in conservation activities in Montana. She was killed in a car accident coming home from Montana in 1969. We sent an application to the Board of Geographic Names with a description of why a mountain in the area where she worked should be named after her. After a time, it was accepted and the mountain is named after her.

This is just another action done by the emperor with no clothes, with no respect for institutions, or the reasons that we have a process that will decide for generations how something is named. It is not decided on merit or the rational discussion of the facts in the case.

Denali is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one” or “great one.”

The Athabascan language was also spoken by the Apache per some Athabascan historians. "The One" has a tendency to love savages and savagery and not civilization.
