Billionaire Paul Allen Finds Lost World War II Cruiser USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea
2017-08-20
[USNI] Seventy-two years after two torpedoes fired from a Japanese submarine sunk cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35), the ship’s wreckage was found resting on the seafloor on Saturday ‐ more than 18,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean’s surface.

Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist, led a search team, assisted by historians from the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) in Washington, D.C., to accomplish what past searches had failed to do ‐ find Indianapolis, considered the last great naval tragedy of World War II.

#8  My cousin Don served on Navy repairs ships, like the AR-5, during WWII, in the north Atlantic. They had abandon ship drills almost every night. Wake up, on deck, with life jackets. Don grew up along the northern Great Lakes & was familiar with stories of ships sinking in cold water. He asked the ship's doctor how cold the sea water was & how long a man could live in the water with a life jacket. The answer was, just above freezing, and a man would live 5 minutes or so. Don ignored the night time drills after that & got a great deal more sleep. I was surprised he wasn't disciplined for not showing up.

#7  Thanks CrazyFool 2017, it's been so long since I saw Jaws that I completely don't remember that line.

Tp refresh my memory, I had to look it up and see what it had to do with the USS Indianapolis. Turns out to be a very appropriate line.

#6  Best line in Quint's speech: "I'll never go in the water with a life jacket again."

#2  You have personal experience with sharks coming at you Zhang Fei?

#1  Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those sharks come in and… they rip you to pieces.
