Pregnant Senegalese women allegedly beaten by two men on Italian bus
18 August
[TheLocal.it] A woman in her sixth month of pregnancy was attacked and repeatedly abused on a bus in Rimini, according to reports in Italy's largest dailies on Friday. The woman, who was of West African origin, said she was attacked and racially insulted on a bus in Rimini by two young Italian men. Several witnesses saw two suspects, one 19-year-old and one 22-year-old, both Italian, push the woman off the bus, reported Repubblica. Italy's largest daily said police were called to the scene soon after the two men were arrested.

Attitudes towards race and ethnic background in Italy are some of the most prejudiced in Europe, according to research. Italy had the highest per cent of survey respondents admit to having "unfavourable views" about the Roma – 82 per cent in 2016 study of attitudes in 10 EU countries by the Pew Research Centre. At least 69 per cent of people said they had 'unfavourable views' of Muslims, second only to Hungary out of the ten EU countries polled.

Far-right AfD set to become third largest party in German parliament, poll finds
15 August 2017
[TheLocal.de] The Alternative for Germany (AfD) have their nose ahead of the other minor parties in Germany, putting them on course to become the third largest party in the Bundestag after September’s election, a new poll has found. The poll published by INSA and Bild on Tuesday found that the far-right AfD are on course to win 10 percent of the vote at the September 24th vote. That would put them in third place behind the Social Democrats (SPD) on 25 percent and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) on 37 percent.

The far-right party, who were set up in 2013 and have recently built popularity on their staunch criticism of Merkel’s refugee policies, are only just ahead of the competition, though. The pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) are set to win 9 percent of the vote, as are Die Linke (The Left Party), INSA predicts. The Green party meanwhile lags behind on 7 percent.

Record number of foreigners registered with Sweden's public employment service
14 August
[TheLocal.se] As of July there were a record 76,561 people registered in the agency's Introduction Programme (Etableringsuppdraget) for unemployed foreigners compared to 59,362 a year before. The programme involves creating a plan tailored to each individual newcomer to the country according to their work experience and education in order to equip them for further education or work.

"Many lack an education that is viable in the Swedish labour market. At the same time, too few are choosing to study during their time in the Introduction Programme," Arbetsförmedlingen head analyst Annika Sundén said in a statement.

The increase in people registered with the Introduction Programme this year can be explained by Sweden’s Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) managing to work through much of the backlog of asylum applications from the record 163,000 people who sought asylum in the country in 2015.

At the same time as the number of people it deals with increases, Arbetsförmedlingen will need 600 million kronor ($74 million) more from the government in 2018 than currently allocated, and 900 million kronor more in 2019.

Latest Nørrebro shooting sends man to hospital after police make arrest
14 August 2017
[TheLocal.dk] Another shooting in Copenhagen’s gang crime-infested Nørrebro neighbourhood left one man hospitalised, two days after a suspected gang leader was arrested for threatening police. Sunday night’s shooting took place near the neighbourhood’s Mimersgade street, reports the Ritzau news agency.

On Saturday, a 30-year-old suspected gang leader from the Danish organised crime group known as ‘Loyal to Familia’ (LTF) was arrested for making threats against a police officer, reports the Politiken newspaper. The group is heavily involved in the series of gang-crime related shootings that have taken place in the Danish capital throughout the summer, which now number well into the twenties.
Finally, the key fact we need to understand the situation, dear Reader:
The accused gang leader, Shuaib Khan, was remanded in custody for 17 days at a preliminary hearing at Copenhagen City Court. Khan is reported to have threatened police during a search of around ten members of the group on July 31st.

A power struggle between the Loyal to Familia group and another gang located in the Mjølnerparken and Nørrebro neighbourhoods is reported to be the cause of the persistent shooting incidents.

Denmark’s government was recently reported to be considering using the army for tasks currently carried out by police – such as checks on the southern border with Germany – in order to make more police available to fight the now months-long gang conflicts in both Copenhagen and Aarhus.

A third man, who had a previous conviction for trafficking, and who acted as a liaison for families, was put on two years' probation. The trial centered on the deaths of 13 refugees in the Mediterranean.

The three organized smuggling trips between Izmir in Turkey and the Greece coastline across the Mediterranean. During one trip in September, 2015, an unlit dinghy overloaded with refugees struck a freighter near the Greek island of Lesbos and 13 people died, Two children remain missing.

The main suspect in the case, a Syrian national in Turkey, was charged with organizing the dangerous boat trips. The boatman was himself a refugee and was offered free travel in return for piloting the dinghy while the third liaised with the family members of the refugees in Germany. The three defendants had come to Germany as refugees themselves.
