...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
Authorities had tightened security in Cairo and other cities after Islamists called for protests against the government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former army chief who ousted his Islamist predecessor Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Demonstrators, mostly Islamist backers of Morsi, clashed with police, leaving 12 protesters dead in Cairo and another in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, a health ministry official told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

Knife-Wielding Man Shot Dead outside Dutch Museum
[AnNahar] Dutch police on Sunday rubbed out a knife-wielding man who tried to stab pedestrians outside an art museum in the northern city of Groningen.

The shooting happened around 5:30 pm (1630 GMT) outside the university city's Groninger Museum, when the man threatened bystanders with a number of large knives, police front man Ernest Zinsmeyer told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

"When police approached the ma, he fled. Officers fired a warning shot but the man tried to stab bystanders as he bravely ran away and police shot him," he said.

The man then fell into a canal near the museum and was pronounced dead by the time police retrieved him from the water.

Zinsmeyer said the suspect had not yet been identified and his motives were unknown.
No doubt there'll be a good deal more of this kind of thing for a while.
He said although a terror attack could not be ruled out, it was unlikely. The incident was being investigated.

As in other countries, Dutch police have been on high alert since a series of Islamist attacks left 17 people dead in Gay Paree earlier this month.

Air strikes kill 35 bad boys in North Wazoo
Peshawar -- Pakistan’s military said it killed 35 militants in fresh air strikes early on Sunday as part of a major offensive against the Taleban and other insurgents in the northwest. Officials said the air attacks were mounted in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan tribal district, which borders Afghanistan.

“In precise aerial strikes 35 terrorists including some foreigners were killed today...” a military statement said. Pakistani officials refer to Arab and Central Asian militants as “foreigners”. They sought sanctuary in tribal areas after fleeing the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Pakistan began a long-awaited push to clear insurgent bases from North Waziristan last June after a bloody Taleban attack on Karachi airport finally sank faltering peace talks. Air strikes, artillery, mortars and ground troops have all been used to retake territory. The army has intensified its offensive since the Taleban’s massacre of 150 people, 134 of them children, in a school in Peshawar in December.

Attack on Pakistani facility cuts power to 140 million
[Ynet] Armed Islamists fighting the Pak government caused a widespread blackout affecting at least 140 million people on Sunday by attacking an electric transmission facility.

80 percent of the country's population were without power following the assault on the station in southwestern Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...

An Nahar adds:
The power failure, one of the worst Pakistain has experienced, caused electricity to be cut in major cities throughout the country, including the capital Islamabad.

It was later restored in much of the country, with the national power company saying normal distribution would resume within hours.

Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali later issued an apology and said electricity had been restored in most of the country, blaming the breakdown on rebels blowing up the line in Naseerabad district, which lies in southwestern Baluchistan province.

Southeast Asia
30 Filipino police commandos killed in clash with rebels
[Ynet] More than 30 police commandos were killed in a clash with Moslem hard boyz Sunday in the southern Philippines in the biggest single-day combat loss for Filipino forces in many years, officials said.

Dozens of commandos had entered the far-flung village of Tukanalipao at dawn looking for a top terror suspect, but had a "misencounter" with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Mayor Tahirudin Benzar Ampatuan of Mamasapano town told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by telephone.
Update from Ynet at 2:10 p.m. ET:
At least 43 Philippine police commandos were killed in a fierce battle with Moslem guerrillas after launching an assault in which they may have killed one of southeast Asia's most-wanted terrorists, officials said Monday.

A police Special Action Force member remained missing while 11 others were maimed in the daylong festivities Sunday in a far-flung village of Mamasapano town in Maguindanao province in the biggest single-day combat loss for the Philippine government in recent memory, officials said.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas called the commandos "fallen heroes" who sacrificed their lives to try to capture Malaysian bombing suspect Zulkifli bin Hir, or Marwan. The top terror suspect may have been killed by the commandos, he said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Army Targets Militants on Outskirts of Arsal
[AnNahar] The army targeted on Sunday bully boyz entrenched in Madinat al-Malahi area on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal.

According to the state-run National News Agency, the army targeted with heavy artillery suspicious movements by gunnies in Madinat al-Malahi area in Arsal's Wadi Hmeid village.

Security sources told LBCI that the military targeted a bulldozer for gunnies in the area.

The mountainous area has long been a smuggling haven, with multiple routes into Syria that have been used since the conflict began in March 2011 to transport weapons and fighters.

Eight Lebanese troops were killed and several others were maimed in bloody festivities that erupted between the army and gunnies in the Tallat al-Hamra festivities on Friday "when snuffies attacked a military surveillance post in Ras Baalbek."

7 Dead, Dozens Hurt as Rebel Rockets Rain Down on Syrian Capital
[AnNahar] Five civilians and two soldiers were killed and dozens of people maimed when rebels fired a barrage of rockets and mortar rounds Sunday at central Damascus, a monitoring group said.

The rebel attack came two days after they threatened to retaliate for deadly air raids by the Syrian regime against an opposition-held area on the edge of the capital.

"Five civilians and two soldiers have been killed and dozens more maimed, as rebels in the Eastern Ghouta area fired more than 43 locally made rockets and mortar rounds at several areas of central Damascus," the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Among the areas hit were the al-Maliki and Mazzeh neighborhoods, as well as Arnus and Sabaa Bahrat squares, said the Britannia-based group.

Agence La Belle France-Presse journalists near Sabaa Bahrat square heard the blasts, while ambulances and fire trucks were seen rushing to the area.

State news agency SANA said the army fired back at the source of the incoming fire in Eastern Ghouta, without providing any details of casualties or naming the areas hit.

The attack came two days after Zahran Alloush, the head of the rebel Jaysh al-Islam (Army of Islam) group, warned on Twitter that his forces would launch a "rocket campaign against the capital" from Sunday.

He wrote that rockets would "rain down every day... in retaliation for the regime's savage air raids" against residents in Eastern Ghouta.

Government aircraft on Friday carried out a series of deadly raids against rebel-held Hammuriyeh in the besieged Eastern Ghouta area east of Damascus.

The Observatory said 56 people were killed, among them six children. Only five of the dead were fighters, said the group, which relies on a network of activists and medics on the ground.

Alloush's Jaysh al-Islam is the most powerful rebel group in Eastern Ghouta.

Tens of thousands of civilians trapped in the area suffer extreme shortages of food and medicine, activists say.

Kurds 'Expel ISIS' from Strategic Kobane
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] Kurdish fighters have expelled Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group holy warriors from inside the Syrian border town of Kobane, a monitor said Monday, dealing a key symbolic blow to the jihadists' ambitions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitor, said fighters from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) had finally pushed ISIS holy warriors out of the town after four months of fighting.

In Iraq meanwhile, a senior army officer announced that Iraqi forces had also "liberated" Diyala province from ISIS.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that YPG forces had "expelled all Islamic State fighters from Kobane and have full control of the town."

"The Kurds are pursuing some jihadists on the eastern outskirts of Kobane, but there is no more fighting inside now."

The monitor said Kurdish forces were carrying out "mopping-up operations" against remaining ISIS forces in the Maqtala district, on the eastern outskirts of the town.

There was no immediate official announcement from the YPG, but Mustafa Ebdi, an activist from the town, told AFP that "fighting has stopped" in Kobane.

YPG forces were "advancing carefully in Maqtala because of the threat of mines and boom-mobiles," he added.

The advance by Kurdish fighters came after 24 hours of heavy bombing by the US-led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the coalition had carried out 17 air strikes against ISIS positions in Kobane in the 24 hours from January 25 alone.

The targets included "tactical units" and "fighting positions" as well as an ISIS vehicle and staging areas, the statement said.

The loss of Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab, would be a key symbolic blow against ISIS, which has lost more than 1,000 fighters since it began its advance on the town on September 16.

#3  Wouldn't be surprised if the Turks close the border crossing to Kobane for "security reasons."

(Won't stop the IS from getting across the border, tho...)

#4  Kurdish defenders had pushed ISIS our of the Southern front in the city of Kobane last week. They then established observation posts on a major hill over looking the Southern area of Kobane and the supply routes to the Eastern Front in Kobane.
*
Several of the young men and women Kurdish fighters you have seen in my posts during the past 3 months have been martyred. The Kurds expected it to take 4 months to liberate Kobane. Precisely the time frame.
*
Tomorrow the Kurds will hold an official ceremony of the liberation.

#7  For a number of ISJVihadis, their private parts is their mouth. For a goodly number others, well, the flagpole would be planted.
