Africa North
Deadly fighting in Tripoli erupts. Again.
Heavy clashes in the far west Tripoli district of Janzour near Bridge 17 broke out tonight between Wirshefana militias and the Fursan Janzour brigade, with some sources suggesting up five people have been killed and 15 wounded.

The fighting over control of the bridge, currently held by the Fursan Janzur (“Janzour Knights”), is said to have started after an individua, allegedly a Wirshefani, was caught trying to steal a vehicle close to the bridge.

The Janzour Knights supposedly support the Presidency Council although they were formerly part of the former Libya Dawn alliance, while the Wirshefana forces back Khalifa Hafter. The latter want to take over the bridge and the surrounding area. They also regard Janzour as part of “their” area, although many residents are originally from the Jebel Nafusa.

Meanwhile in what a loosely related development in Tripoli’s upmarket Hay Andalus district, just west of the city centre, security vehicles have now been seen carrying stickers denoting them to be under the authority of the so-called National Salvation Government of Khalifa Ghwell.

The move is linked to the current rivalry between the so-called Hay Andalus Defence Operations Room which is part of the Mobile Forces militia, itself mainly based in Janzour, and the Rada (“Deterrence”) force which backs the Presidency Council.

Tensions have been rising in Hay Andalus over the past fortnight following the arrest by Rada of the operations room’s leader, Adel Sifau (also known as Shita). He is accused of drug dealing, kidnapping and numerous other crimes. A week ago, locals closed roads, demanding the removal of the operations room.

They also claimed that operations room militiamen and the Mobile Forces which were previously part of Libya Dawn alliance were now again backing Ghwell.

“The mobile forces are with the National Salvation Government and Ghwell because they are largely Amazigh and need allies against Rada,” said one local comentator. “They want the help of Salah Badi [a major ally of Ghwell] and his Samoud Front,” he added.

Five die and 15 wounded as LNA battles to take final Ganfouda position
[Libya Herald] What had seemed to be the end game for the bully boyz in Benghazi’s Ganfouda district a week ago has turned out to be a bloody siege of a group of apartment blocks which today cost the Libyan National Army five more dead and 15 maimed.

An unknown number of bully boyz is continuing to resist the LNA, whose casualties today came from the Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
An airforce jet scored what seemed to be a direct hit on the apartments sending up a huge plume of smoke and dust. But resistance does not appear to have slackened. One LNA source said that earlier in the day a group of bully boyz had tried to break through the army’s lines but had been beaten back.

The inability of the LNA to justify its claim of total victory a week ago is not only embarrassing but appears to be holding up moves to assault the remaining terrorist positions in the city’s downtown Sabri and Suq al-Hout districts. A number of units had been pulled out of Ganfouda and redeployed on the edge of these two remaining bully boy enclaves.

Soldiers have also today uncovered a mass grave in Ganfouda which contains an unknown number of bodies. Forensic experts are now examining the corpses, some of which appear to be quite recent. It is unclear if the dead are terrorists, civilians or captured members of the LNA.

Hospital murders following deadly Gasr Ben Gashir clashes
[Libya Herald] Following festivities that resulted in five people being killed in Gasr Ben Gashir yesterday, three who injured in the fighting are reported to have been murdered today while being treated in a local hospital.

Local gunnies are said to have stormed the al-Afia medical centre and shot the three in what is being seen as an act of Dire Revenge.

The three were from the Marghani family and related to local militia commander Salah Marghani. He is originally from Tarhouna, 40 kilometres from Gasr Ben Gashir.

Reports yesterday said the original festivities were due to attempts by Tarhuna traders, backed by Marghini militia, to assert control over the central vegetable market in Gasr Ben Gashir. Local merchants and their supporters resident. Known as Suq al-Ahad (Sunday market), it reputedly provides Tripoli

, 25 kilometres to the north, with some 50 percent of its vegetables.

As a wealthy institution, it is a prize target for money-hungry militias and local traders in the town had recently voiced their anger at attempts by Tarhouna traders supported by the Marghanis to control business there.

Following a meeting with local elders and security forces, schools in Gasr Ben Gashir have been closed in protest at the armed militias operating in the town, and roads in and out were reported blocked.

Unwent kaboom! ordinance and mines still litter Sirte and the operation to clear the town of the danger has only just begun.

It was also reported today that 20 rockets had been found in a valley south of the town, along with the decomposing body of a man thought to be an IS terrorist. It is unclear if this is in the areas struck by US bombers eight days ago when some 90 terrorist suspects were killed.

Meanwhile Sirte mayor Mukhtar al-Madani is working on bringing back fellow citizens who, after fleeing the town when IS took over, have survived as Internally Displaced People elsewhere in country.

Tunisian Held in Germany Linked to 2015 Tunis Museum Attack
[AnNahar] A Tunisian man tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Germany on Wednesday on suspicion of recruiting for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group is also accused of involvement in the deadly 2015 attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis, German prosecutors said.

The 36-year-old is wanted by Tunisian authorities on suspicion of "participating in planning and carrying out" the attack.

He is also accused of involvement in the deadly jihadist assault on the border town of Ben Guerdane last March, the prosecutor's office in the western state of Hesse said in a statement.

Tunisian authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in June 2016, it added.

The suspect was taken into custody early Wednesday as police carried out sweeping anti-terror raids in Frankfurt and nearby towns.

"He did not offer any resistance," Alexander Badle, a front man for the Frankfurt prosecutor's office, told news hounds.

In Germany, the Tunisian national is suspected of recruiting for the IS jihadist group and of building a network of IS supporters with the goal of staging an attack in the country, he added.

Plans for the attack were still "at a very early stage", he said. "There was no concrete danger of an attack."

The suspect arrived in Germany as an asylum seeker in August 2015, the prosecutors said, after already living in the country for a decade some years earlier.

He was arrested the following August on an outstanding 2008 conviction for causing bodily harm.

After serving a 43-day sentence, he was kept in detention awaiting deportation to Tunisia before the authorities were forced to release him again.

"As the Tunisian authorities, despite repeated reminders from the German authorities, failed to supply the necessary deportation documents within the 40-day period, the suspect was released on November 4, 2016," the statement said.

He was kept under surveillance from the day of his release until his arrest on Wednesday, it added.

IS grabbed credit for the Bardo attack during which two gunnies shot up the museum, killing 21 foreign tourists and a police officer.

The Ben Guerdane attack last March saw dozens of heavily armed jihadists cross into the frontier town from Libya to launch coordinated attacks on police and army posts, killing seven civilians and 13 security personnel.

'Allahu Akbar" machete man gunned down at Louvre
[AFP] A machete-wielding man who yelled "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") was shot and injured as he attacked security forces at the Louvre museum in Paris on Friday, police said.

One soldier was injured in the assault by the knifeman who was shot five times and is alive despite his serious injuries.

Two backpacks he was carrying did not contain explosives, city police chief Michel Cadot said.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve called the attack "terrorist in nature" after the incident which led streets around the world-famous museum to be sealed off.

The shooting comes with France on its highest state of alert with thousands of troops patrolling the capital following a string of attacks in the last few years.

Two of Baba Ladla's close associates -- Sikandar alias Sikko and Mohammad Yaseen alias Mama -- were also killed in the encounter.

After an exchange of fire that lasted about 35 minutes, Baba Ladla and his two accomplices were killed in the encounter.

One Kalashnikov, a 9mm pistol, a 9mm mauser and a hand grenade were also recovered from their possession, a police statement said.

"The killing of Baba Ladla group [members] is a lesson for all those youngsters, who inspired by leaders like Baba Ladla are backing or linked to crimes, that they cannot escape the grasp of law," the Rangers statement said.

Two Philippine soldiers kidnapped by Maoist militants
[Rappler] New People's Army militants abducted two Philippine soldiers in Sultan Kudarat province on Thursday morning.

Military spokesperson Rhyan Batchar said that the two soldiers were abducted "by armed men suspected to be members of the New People's Army" in Barangay Dela Paz in Columbio town. He confirmed the suspects to be communist insurgents in a later statement.

Batchar said were riding a motorbike and were unarmed when a group of armed men threw stones at them prompting them to stop. He said, "The 10th Infantry Division condemns the NPA for kidnapping two enlisted men of 39th Infantry Battalion . . . The NPA is showing complete disregard of its own earlier pronouncement that its unilateral ceasefire is in effect until February 10, by continuously committing atrocities against soldiers and civilians."

The incident happened a day after the NPA announced that it would terminate its ceasefire with the government on February 10. On January 29 or days before the NPA's announcement, communist rebels abducted a soldier, Private First Class Erwin Salan, as he led a forest clean-up drive in Alegria, Surigao del Norte.

ISIS uses captured Turkish Army equipment against Syrian Army in Aleppo
[ALMASDARNEWS] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) holy warriors showed off their new military hardware in east Aleppo yesterday, as they attacked the Syrian Arab Army with recently captured Turkish armored vehicles.

The terrorist group’s official media, al-’Amaq, posted footage, yesterday, of their forces using Turkish Kobra vehicles to attack the Syrian Arab Army south of al-Bab.

Using Turkish armored vehicles, the Islamic State recaptured the village of Rasm Surhan after launching a counter-offensive against the Syrian Arab Army.

These armored vehicles were captured by the Islamic State forces during the Turkish Army’s failed offensives east of al-Bab.

A senior officer from the Syrian Arab Army told al-Masdar last week that they believe the Turkish Army purposely leaves their equipment in east al-Bab so that the Islamic State can reuse it against the government forces later.

Borrowed a page from the Iraqis, did they? Knowing the Turks, they probably left the fuel tanks empty and a note that the oil had to be changed.

near the town of Margada in Hasakah Governorate by ISIS guards, under orders of the towns governor, Abdu Abdullah al-Jizrawi, a source close to ISIS told ARA News.

They were then executed by a firing squad.

"ISIS has accused them of treason for failing to defend the so-called Caliphate," a media activist in Margada told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
"The holy warrior fighters evacuated their post in northern Deir Ezzor without permission, while festivities continued between ISIS and Syria goverment forces in the area," the source added.

The six murderous Moslems were publicly executed by firing squad in central Margada on Wednesday.

ISIS takes over new areas in East Qalamoun, threatens airbase

fighters continue in East Qalamoun area with the terror organization taking over more territories and posing a real threat on Al Seen airbase.

The 3-day wide-scale offensive launched by ISIS has yielded in considerable gains. The group is now in full control of several sites to the northwest of the airbase including al-Safa checkpoint, Battalion 559, Chemistry Battaion, in addition to several hilltops overlooking the strategic Triangle checkpoint.

Another site was lost; the Abandoned Battalion located in the eastern outskirts of the airbase following a heavy attack by the jihadi bully boys. The government troops also withdrew from and advanced defense line ‐ recaptured last Saturday ‐ in the north of the airport.

A source told AMN that workers at the Cement Factory were evacuated for fear of a potential ISIS attack on the facility.

ISIS sets ablaze Syria’s largest source of gas as Syrian Army closes on their positions
[ALMASDARNEWS] A Syrian military source told Al-Masdar News that the Islamic State terrorist organization set ablaze the last wells at the Hayyan Gas Fields in order to make the site no longer useful for the government.

This news comes just hours after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah liberated the strategic Jihar Crossroad, putting them at the outskirts of the Hayyan Gas Fields.

Hayyan Gas Fields were once the largest source of gas to millions of Syrians; its loss in December proved incredibly costly for the Syrian government, as they were already dealing with a water crisis in Damascus.

ISIS has been rapidly withdrawing from several sites in the western countryside of Palmyra, as the Syrian Arab Army and their allies from Hezbollah push further east in order to liberate the gas fields under the terrorist group’s control.

ISIS kills fleeing family in Qaim

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) An official source in Anbar Province revealed that the Islamic State group killed a family, while trying to escape from the city of Qaim, west of the province, Alsumaria News reported on Thursday.

The source said, “A family of three tried to escape, using their vehicle, from the city of Qaim (350 km west of Ramadi) to the areas held by security forces in Anbar.”

“The extremist group monitored the vehicle, then chased it and killed the whole family,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

The Islamic State group captured the city of Qaim three years ago, and is still besieging thousands of civilians inside the city, as well as using them as human shields.

ISIS mutilates 2 kidz for failing to carry out executions

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The self-proclaimed Islamic State group amputated the hands of two children, in western Mosul, for refusing to carry out execution sentence on two civilians, a source told Alsumaria News on Thursday.

The source said, “The Islamic State’s leaders issued orders to train a group of children on fighting in the group’s camps in Nables neighborhood, in the western side of Nineveh.”

“Meanwhile, members of the Islamic State terrorist group amputated the hands of two children, for refusing to carry out the execution sentence on two civilians in front of their families,” the source explained.

“The age of the abused children ranges between 10 and 12 years old,” the source further added.

Noteworthy, Mosul was captured by the Islamic State in June 10, 2014, while security forces are preparing to liberate the western side of the city, after recapturing the eastern side.
