[DW] The US military has confirmed that a US dronezap in eastern Afghanistan on March 19 killed the senior al-Qaeda military commander Qari Yasin. He had been linked to numerous attacks in his native Pakistain.

Qari Yasin was killed in a US dronezap in Barmal District of Paktika

"The death of Qari Yasin is evidence that holy warriors who defame Islam and deliberately target innocent people will not escape justice," US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in a statement.

Yasin was accused of plotting the 2008 bombing on a Marriott Hotel in Islamabad that killed dozens of people, including two US service members.

Yasin was affiliated with several terrorist organizations and had assisted bad boy outfits Jundallah
..."Soldiers of God," a name used by two separate terror outfits, one active in Iran and the other in Pakistain. Both are Sunni organizations that target Shiites. The Pak version has close relations with al-Qaeda and the Pak Talibs and is probably a false nose and mustache for Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
and al-Qaeda in several attacks.

2 ISIS leaders among 22 killed in Nangarhar province
At least twenty two militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed in a series of airstrikes conducted in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) forces in Eastern Afghanistan said the airstrikes were carried out on Friday in the vicinity of Nazian district.

The source further added that the militants were targeted in Milwa area of Nazian district.

The ISIS leaders killed in the airstrikes have been identified as Shino and Zargul.

Nangarhar is among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups have recently increased their insurgency activities in some parts of the province during the recent years.

Both the Afghan and US forces conducted regular strikes against the loyalists of the terror group in this province.

The increased raids, usually involving drone strikes, by the US forces followed a broader role granted by the Obama administration earlier last year.

The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) are also conducting counter-terrorism operations led by 201st Silab Corps which were launched last month to eliminate the loyalists of the terror group from this province.

Security forces detain 6 in Herat
The Afghan Intelligence operatives have arrested a group of six militants involved in major terrorist activities in western Herat province of Afghanistan.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) in a statement said the militants were arrested during an operation conducted by the Special Forces of the Afghan Intelligence.

The statement further added that the group was led by commander Safiullah.
The other militants detained have been identified as Mushfiq, Wahidullah, Ghulam Mohammad, Baharuddin, and Syed Esa.

According to NDS, the group was actively involved in some major terrorist related activities in the vicinity of Enjil district.

The detained militants have confessed that they were involved in the murder of two police officers, one policeman, and several other terrorist activities.

Herat is among the relatively calm provinces in western Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups are active in some of its remote districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

The province also witnessed deadly clashes among the rival Taliban groups last year and earlier this year which left scores of people dead.

Sar-e-Pul mosque bomb plot uncovered
A deadly plot by the anti-government armed militants to detonate explosives inside a mosque in northern Sar-e-Pul province has been foiled by the Afghan security forces.

According to the local government officials, the militants were looking to target the Friday prayers in Guzar Shahan mosque.

Provincial governor Mohammad Mohammad Zahir Wahdat said a suspect has been arrested in connection to the planting of an Improvised Explosive Device inside the mosque.

He said the suspect has been identified as Basir and was arrested by the security forces after he planted the IED in the mosque.

Wahdat further added that the Afghan security forces managed to detect and defuse the IED before the militants manage to detonate and a deadly terrorist attack plot was foiled.

Sar-e-Pul province has been among the relatively calm provinces since the fall of the Taliban regime but the anti-government armed militants have increased their insurgency activities in this province during the recent years.

The anti-government armed militants including the Taliban insurgents frequently use Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces and government officials.

According to the UN mission in Afghanistan, it documented 11,418 civilian casualties between 1st January 2016 to 31st December, 2016.

According to the report, 61 percent of all civilian casualties were incurred through attacks by the anti-government elements which includes a total of 6,994 civilian casualties (2,131 deaths and 4,863 injured).

Islamic State’s Amaq reports bomb blast in Sylhet
[DhakaTribune] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
’s news outlet, Amaq, has reported the suicide kaboom that killed six people in Shibbari, Sylhet on Saturday evening.

It reported on its Telegram channel that the kaboom, that took place near the Lion of Islam den that law enforcement and the army were raiding, had killed "tens of people."

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
the short message did not call it a suicide kaboom or claim any responsibility.

Tasneem Khalil, a Sweden-based journalist specialising in terrorism, provided this rough translation of the original Arabic broadcast: "A security official/source to Amaq: Tens of dead and injured among Bangladeshi troops following the kaboom of an bomb at a gathering of troops/forces near a checkpoint in Sylhet, northeast of Bangladesh."
The Times of Israel adds:
Sylhet police front man Zedan Al Musa said police primarily blame a new faction of the homegrown Lion of Islam group, Jamayetul ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), which has been blamed for a wave of attacks in recent years, for the blasts.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Six Russian Troops Killed as Rebels Attack Chechen Base
[AnNahar] Six Russian troops died in the early hours of Friday when a group of Lions of Islam attacked their base in Chechnya, with six rebels killed in the resulting shootout, the National Guard said.

Russia's National Guard, established last year, is a new branch of internal troops aimed at defending borders and countering extremism.

It is subordinate directly to President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
and has bases in the country's volatile North Caucasus regions including Chechnya.

In a statement, the National Guard said the rebels tried to storm their base in heavy fog at around 2:30 am local time (Thursday 2330 GMT) but were spotted by a group of soldiers who opened fire.

"Six of the attackers were destroyed," the statement said. "During the armed combat, six military were killed and there are maimed."

None of the Lions of Islam managed to enter the base, the National Guard said.

Counter-terrorism troops, Sherlocks and explosives experts from the security forces are at the scene, it said.

Chechnya was the scene of two separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, but the region has been largely pacified under the iron-fisted rule of strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Two National Guard soldiers were killed in a Chechen village in January during a joint operation with police and special forces in which four suspected holy warriors were also killed.

The Russian North Caucasus is one of the major sources of foreign jihadists fighting in Syria and Iraq.

In January Kadyrov said his forces had detained more than 50 Lions of Islam linked to the Islamic State

Europe
Two Charged over Arms Supply to French Airport Attacker
[AnNahar] French anti-terrorism judges have charged two men suspected of involvement in supplying a weapon to the gunman killed at Gay Paree's Orly airport after attacking soldiers, a judicial source said Saturday.

The suspects, aged 30 and 43, were charged Friday for "association with terrorist criminals" over the March 18 attack and are being held in jug, the source said.

The younger one was also charged with arms possession related to a terror plot. They are both from the Gay Paree area and lived close to the assailant, Ziyed Ben Belgacem,
...yet another older, violent petty criminal who suddenly decided to redeem himself by committing jihad not far from home...
according to a preliminary investigation.
Just being neighbourly, donchaknow.
Ben Belgacem, 39, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he attacked the capital's second busiest airport, according to judicial sources.

Ben Belgacem, born in La Belle France to Tunisian parents, grabbed a soldier on patrol at Orly's southern terminal and put a gun to her head and seized her rifle, saying he wanted to "die for Allah".

His father insisted his son -- who had spent time in prison for armed robbery and drug-dealing -- was not a holy warrior.

He had, however, been investigated in 2015 over suspicions he had been radicalised while serving jail time, but his name did not feature on the list of those thought to pose a high risk.

The attack at Orly came with La Belle France still on high alert following a wave of jihadist attacks that have claimed more than 230 lives in two years.

The violence has made security a key issue in La Belle France's two-round presidential election on April 23 and May 7.

11 dead as migrant boat sinks off Turkey coast: Report
[AlAhram] Eleven people drowned and four were missing after a migrant boat sank off Turkey's Aegean coast on Friday, local media reported.

The bodies of the dead were found on a shore in the western province of Aydin, the private Dogan news agency reported.

Seven others were found alive on the inflatable dinghy, the agency said.

The drownings come less than a week after the first anniversary of the EU-Turkey agreement to halt migrant arrivals in Europe, which sharply reduced the number of crossings to the bloc from Turkey.

But Ankara has raised alarms in Brussels by threatening in recent weeks to scrap the agreement, which came into force after an estimated 1.26 million migrants reached Europe in 2015.

Europe and Turkey are locked in a bitter dispute after Turkish ministers were blocked from campaigning on the continent for a "yes" vote in next month's referendum on boosting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers.

According to the International Organization for Migration, there were around 363,000 migrant arrivals in Greece in 2016 after the Turkey-EU accord.

Under the deal, Turkey undertook to tighten its maritime borders and break up the people-smuggling networks that had helped migrants to make the risky crossing in exchange for billions of euros in support for refugees in Turkey.

Ankara has also criticised the EU for failing to fulfil its promise to give visa-free travel in the Schengen zone to Turks as part of the agreement.

Iraqi forces halt Mosul operation over concern for civilian their own casualties – report

#1  al aSha-med makes good editorial point in headline

The Iraq Govt forces are undoubtedly depleted from months of continual house to house fighting. No reliable estimate of casualty figures has been released in past 6 months which is not a good sign. Back in Dec, a group estimated that the Govt side lost almost 2000 killed in Nov. 2016 and that wasn't confirmed by the Govt.

Six to ten commies killed in Cotabato clash
[Manila Times] Eighty families were evacuated when about 50 members of the New People's Army attacked a para-military detachment of CAFGU (Citizen’s Armed Forces Geographical Unit) in Tampakan, South Cotabato on Friday morning. The fierce firefight lasted for almost seven hours and families in the area were forced to abandon their houses.

A military source estimated that about six to ten militants were killed when two 105mm howitzers bombarded the area. The militants managed to retrieve their injured comrades and fled during the heavy fighting.

Colonel Benjamin Leander, head of the Philippine Army's 27th Infantry Battalion, believed the attackers are from the NPA's 73 District Guerilla Unit of the Far South Mindanao Command front.

Police provincial director Frank Alvero said they have received intelligence reports about the NPA's threat to carry out attacks in various parts of South Cotabato “and on Friday they attacked at 6 in the morning as we made our effort to reinforce and help the 27th IB,PA joining the counter operation against the NPA."

Meanwhile, a voice message from certain "Ka Efren" of the NPA Far South Mindanao command dispatched through a local radio claimed they were responsible in the ambush of private Albino Bahian who was killed during a clash with the NPA Guerilla Front 73 in Barangay Hinalaan, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat last week.

Philippine soldiers kill two Abu Sayyaf terrorists
[Manila Times] Philippine troops killed two Abu Sayyaf militants and captured another jihadi during a rescue of an abducted Filipino sailor in Basilan early on Saturday morning. Military spokesperson Jo-ann Petinglay said five motorized boats used by the Abu Sayyaf in their kidnapping activities and piracy were also seized by soldiers in the towns of Al-Barka and Tuburan, where the two jihadis were killed.

One of them, Jaudi Salapuddin, was involved in the recent hijacking of a Panamian cargo ship off Basilan, several miles south of Zamboanga City. The militants also seized the ship's engineer Laurence Tito and captain Aurelio Agacac who was rescued by soldiers. The other dead jihadi was identified as Bistahan Nisalun.

Petinglay said troops also captured Rolly Ikih at the house of Vanessa Lajiman, a village councilor of Tumahubong in Sumisip town. Troops also seized a gun and ammunition from Ikih who is wanted by authorities in Basilan. It os not known why Ikih was in the home of Lajiman or whether the village official tipped off the military about him.

Defense volunteer shot in front of home in Thai south

Russian airstrikes hit targets in Hama
Russian warplanes flew over rebel-held areas near Hama, Syria in a rush to aid pro-regime Syrian forces losing ground, a Syrian source told Reuters on Friday.

State media later reported that regime forces allegedly recaptured all positions it had lost earlier, which is strategically accredited to accompanying Russian aerial bombardment of rebel sites.

Syrian opposition forces have previously made sweeping advances after leading a fierce assault in the north of the Jobar district of Damascus.

Rebel groups launched the attack on Tuesday and have captured at least 11 villages and towns, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based organization that reports on the war.

It marks the biggest attack by rebels in months. Rebel gains have shown the challenge facing the Syrian pro-regime forces and allied militia as they fight on numerous fronts.

“Air strikes have now started, and there is concentrated artillery firing against the armed groups and the headquarters of their leaders and supply lines, paving the way for the counter-attack,” the military source told Reuters.

“The Russians are, of course, participating in these raids.” Rebel groups were focusing their attack on Friday on the village of Qomhana, some 8 km , north of Hama city, Observatory Director Rami Abdulrahman said.

The fighting has underscored the bleak prospects for a new round of United Nations sponsored peace talks that are underway in Geneva.

16 die in airstrike in east Ghouta
BEIRUT: At least 16 civilians were killed and dozens wounded on Saturday in an airstrike on an opposition-held area outside Syria’s capital Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

It said it was not immediately clear who was responsible for the strike on the town Hammuriyeh in the opposition bastion of Eastern Ghouta.

“Sixteen civilians, including a child, were killed and around 50 others wounded in an airstrike on the main street in the town of Hammuriyeh,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

It was not immediately clear if all the wounded were civilians or if some were opposition fighters, he said, adding that the death toll could rise further because a number of the injured were in serious condition.

The Eastern Ghouta region outside Damascus has been under a devastating regime siege since 2012, and is also the regular target of regime airstrikes and artillery fire.
It is the last remaining opposition stronghold near Damascus, where a string of local “reconciliation deals” have seen villages and towns brought back under the control of President Bashar Assad’s regime.

Syria’s Army and its allies retook a village near Hama on Saturday, a Syrian military source said, as the regime tried to turn back a major insurgent offensive, but bitter fighting continued, the Observatory said.

Assad and his allies, Russia, Iran and Shiite militias from nearby countries, are seeking to staunch the biggest opposition assault in months which began this week in Damascus and the Hama countryside.

Insurgents have made big advances toward Hama, taking about a dozen towns and villages and moving to within a few kilometers of the city and its military airbase, the Observatory said.

“Units of our armed forces and allied forces restored the town of Kawkab and continue their military operations in more than one direction of the northern Hama countryside,” the military source said.

The Observatory said opposition fighters had been forced to withdraw under rocket fire from some of the positions they had occupied, but mutual shelling in parts of the Hama battlefront continued.

In Damascus, the army said it had managed to recapture all the positions it lost early in the week to the opposition in the Jobar area, which is on the northeastern fringe of the central district of the capital.

In another development, the second phase of an evacuation of opposition fighters in Homs as part of a deal to surrender the city’s last insurgent pocket of Al-Waer to the regime has been delayed until Monday, a senior official and a war monitor said on Saturday.

Homs Province Gov. Talal Barazi was cited by city officials in a message to Reuters as saying the operation would continue on Monday after having earlier said it would go ahead as planned on Saturday.

The Observatory said the evacuation was being postponed because of the fighting that began on Tuesday in Hama province.

The departure of a first group of opposition fighters and their families from Al-Waer began a week ago and the evacuation is expected to be one of the largest of its kind, opposition activists and the war monitor, the Observatory said.

Under the deal, as with others that have been previously agreed for besieged pockets, insurgents are able to leave with light weapons for opposition-held parts of northern Syria along with family members and other civilians who choose to depart.

Between 10,000-15,000 people were expected to leave Homs in weekly batches, the Observatory and opposition activists have said.

More than 320,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-regime protests.

Regime ally Russia and opposition backer Turkey brokered a nationwide truce in December, but violence has continued across the country.
