Landmine Kills One and Injures Nine in Khost
[Tolo News] On Monday evening one civilian was killed and nine others were injured in a blast caused by a landmine in southern Khost, local officials said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the capital of Khost when a vehicle struck the landmine killing one and injuring nine others, said Provincial Police Chief Faizullah Ghairat.

The victims have been taken to the hospital for treatment, he said.

No insurgent group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Deputy Minister Kidnapped in Kabul
[Tolo News] Deputy Minister of Public Works, Ahmad Shah Waheed, was kidnapped by unknown gunnies Tuesday morning in Kabul city, making him the top government official to be kidnapped in the heavily fortified Afghan capital, officials said.

"Minister Waheed had just entered his vehicle from his home north of Kabul city at 7:20 a.m. to go to work when four gunnies opened fire on his vehicle, injuring his driver in the foot and taking the minister with them," said Sediq Sediqqi, front man for the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

An 18-year-old shopkeeper, Ahmad, witnessed the abduction and told TOLOnews news hound Karim Amini that the kidnappers were in a white SUV with one license plate on the back of the vehicle. He said they fired only two bullets.

"They were in local attire and managed to take the deputy minister in less than five minutes and flee the area," Ahmad said.

Police officials said they have launched a full investigation.

Kabul city has been relatively safe in terms of kidnapping in the past couple of years, while suicide kabooms and tactical assaults have remained more common. But the abduction of Minister Waheed alarmed other government officials and business leaders.

Kidnapping Afghan officials is not a tactic not often used by the Taliban. Experts suggest that it might be criminals who seek ransom.

A family member of Minister Waheed, who did not want to be named, said they have not been contacted by the kidnappers yet.

Kabul Police Chief General Zahir Zahir told TOLOnews that protecting ministerial level officials is not his responsibility, explaining that protection for ministers and deputy ministers is provided by the Afghan intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

Minister Waheed had neither a bodyguard nor an armored vehicle at the time of his abduction.

Morocco dismantles Syria recruitment cell
[MAGHAREBIA] The Moroccan security services just caught a terrorist cell that allegedly recruited and sent young jihadists to fight in Syria.

"These fighters were sent in co-ordination with representatives of terrorist organizations linked to al-Qaeda, especially the Sham al-Islam movement, Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
," the interior ministry said Saturday (April 12th).

The Moroccan volunteers receive specialised training in the use of weapons, explosives and suicide kabooms so that they can return to home to carry out terrorist operations, according to the ministry.

"As well as selling their belongings, the members of the dismantled cell collected donations from people who sympathised with their jihadist beliefs to pay for volunteers to travel to Syria and fight there after recruiting them and explaining various security precautions to them at meetings held at a house used especially for that purpose," the interior ministry stated.

Abdelkhaleq Al Mouloudi, a communications expert, explained that "as well as providing mere information, the interior ministry's statement reveals how al-Qaeda is exploiting the Syrian conflict to influence young Moroccans and involve them in its terrorist plans."

"The dismantling of this terrorist cell shows that the number of jihadists who want to fight in Syria is growing all the time, yet paradoxically, the number of Moroccan fighters who are dying is rising too," commented Mahmoud Hanine, a journalist who writes about terrorism for a Casablanca daily.

"Tens of hundreds of Moroccans belonging to Harakat Sham al-Islam, Jabhat al-Nusra, which is closely linked to al-Qaeda, and the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) have been killed in the Syrian war and the case of Annas Al Haloui, the front man for salafist prisoners, who died just three months after arriving in Latakia, is proof of this," said Moussa Al Mouritani, an expert on Islamist movements.

He said it was important to remember that the Moroccan jihadist troops who arrive in Syria via Turkey are trained by the Saudi cheikh Abdullah al-Mohaisany, as well as veterans from the Afghanistan war.

"But now, we are seeing a reversal of the situation because for various reasons, the fighting, which was supposed to be against Bashir al-Assad's troops, has turned into an aggressive confrontation between jihadists from various fighting brigades," he said.

Mostafa Belmaalem, a sociologist, said that a combination of factors attract young people to go and wage jihad in Syria.

"The concept of Umma al-Islamia (the Islamic Nation) is a fundamental factor which contributes to the desire to go to Syria to help Sunni Moslems who are being ill-treated by the Syrian regime's army," Belmaalem said.

Ahmed Wafid lives in Derb Soltane in Casablanca. His neighbour Brahim, a young man aged no more than about thirty, died in the Syrian conflict and left behind a family of two girls, their mother and his parents.

"I still can't understand where he suddenly got the idea of going to fight in Syria from, but Brahim showed no signs of radicalism. He loved rai singing and looked after his two little girls very well," said Wafid, who is upset about his family's miserable situation since his death.

Kidnappers demand prisoner release in exchange for Jordanian ambassador
[Libya Herald] The kidnappers of Jordanian ambassador Fawaz Al-Aytan have demanded that a Libyan bad boy Islamist be released from prison in Jordan in exchange for the diplomat.

One of the Libyans investigating Aytan's abduction said that the kidnappers wanted Mohammed Dersi, who was given a life sentence in 2007 for planning to bomb a Jordanian airport, to be released, according to Rooters.

The Libyan authorities were working hard to find and release the ambassador, Interior Ministry spokesperson Rami Kaal told the Libya Herald. "We believe that we will find him very soon because information has been flooding in," he said.

The Interior Ministry was very angry and upset by the incident, he said. "It is unacceptable, especially because the relations between Jordan and Libya are very good, and many Libyans receive medical treatment in Jordan," Kaal said. He added that Jordan's support of Libya during the revolution had been extraordinary.

Aytan was grabbed this morning when he was on his way to work, between 8 and 8.30 am. Three vehicles, described as Toyotas, surrounded Aytan's car and masked men shot his Moroccan driver before forcing the ambassador into one of the vehicles, Kaal said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital and treated for two gunshot wounds to the legs. His condition is said to be stable, according to Libyan news agency LANA.

Boko Haram Abducts 103 Girls From High School In Chibok, Borno State
[SAHARAREPORTERS] SaharaReporters has just learned that suspected members of the Islamist krazed killer group, Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, have kidnapped 103 students in a daring raid at the Girls Secondary School in Chibok, a town on the border between Borno and Adamawa States.

The group's assault on the all-female high school took place on Monday night. A security source disclosed that members of the krazed killer Islamist group killed a soldier guarding the school and inflicted injuries on several villagers before abducting the students.

The police commissioner in Borno State, Lawan Tanko, confirmed the kidnapping of the students to news hounds in the state.

A source who lives near the school told a correspondent of SaharaReporters that there was complete chaos during the attack, adding that the students could put up no resistance to the heavily armed attackers.

The mass abduction lasted between 9PM -3 AM as sect members made several trips picking and choosing their victims out of the 250 students enrolled in the school.

Residents of the area also told Saharanews hounds that the snuffies razed 100 homes because some of the residents initially resisted the krazed killers.

#3  Update from Business Insider

Boston Police reportedly arrested a man Monday evening after he allegedly caused a disturbance by shouting and dropping a backpack at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on the anniversary of the bombing there last year. According to CBS Boston, the suspect is a 25-year-old man named Kayvon Edson who is being charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and possession of a hoax device. CBS also reported the bag contained a rice cooker and confetti. Instagram videos show a man wearing a long black veil and shouting "Boston strong!" before he allegedly dropped the backpack.

A man using the name Kayvon Edson who appears to match photos of the suspect shown by NECN has an extensive digital trail where he documented his activities as a "performance artist." On Facebook, a page for Edson features a picture of one of the brothers charged with last year's Marathon bombing, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The photo, which was posted by Edson about 14 hours ago, has a heading saying, "Had a blast at the marathon!!!"

Give him a fair trial, then hang 'im high. Too stupid to live isn't a threat, it's a diagnosis.

Passengers and crew subdue man who attempts to exit plane at 30,000 feet.
Flight 722 lifted off from Chicago Midway Sunday afternoon headed to Sacramento, California. The drink cart had just moved through the aisle when witnesses say a man tried to open a plane door, saying he wanted to jump out. The horror at 30,000 feet was caused by a passenger with a history of bizarre behavior and contact with law enforcement. While he currently lives in California, he recently moved there from Chicago's west suburbs, where his arrests are on the books.

There are 139 witnesses to what happened onboard the Southwest flight, and almost as many cell phone videos of what happened. A man is charged with assaulting and intimidating a flight crew member and flight attendant, and interfering with the performance of the flight duties.

The man, now identified as 23-year-old Joshua Carl Lee Suggs. The jetliner en route to Sacramento, was forced to put down in Omaha, Nebraska. According to the federal complaint, Joshua Carl Lee Suggs pushed past flight attendant attempted to open the exterior door of the aircraft, located in the aft galley. A flight attendant two stepped between Joshua Carl Lee Suggs and the door and called for help, a number of passengers exited their seats and subdued Suggs, who continued to be combative.
A pack, not a herd.
Witnesses report his pupils were extremely dilated and his speech was incoherent but clear.

"Just tied his hands together and put him in the chair and I think one of the marshals sat with him for the rest of the trip till we got to Omaha," said a witness.

#10  Good Flight announcement - for all you flying people

Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain.
Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to New York.

The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So, sit back, relax, and.........OH... MY GOD!"

Silence followed.

Some moments later, the captain came back on the intercom. "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled coffee in my lap.

"You should see the front of my pants!"

From the back of the plane, an Irish passenger yelled....... "For the luvva Jaysus......you should see the back of mine!"

#11  You cannot open airliner doors at altitude, they are plug doors for a reason. Outside psi at 35000 feet is 1psi, the cabin in flight is 10 psi, about the same as being in Denver, sea level is 14 psi. You can have a small breach, bullet hole,in the pressure hull but that will still not result in a catastrophic movie scene. I flew on many a military cargo planes, damn things leak like a sieve.

Militants attacked after soldier hurt in blast
[DAWN] Helicopter gunships attacked krazed killer hideouts in North Wazoo on Tuesday after a security man was injured in a roadside kaboom.

Four to five security personnel were carrying water from a nearby spring when the blast took place. One of them was injured.

Security personnel cordoned off the area and started looking for the suspects. The search continued for about 30 minutes during which suspected krazed killer hideouts were attacked. There was no report of any casualty.

No group has grabbed credit for the blast which took place at a time when the shura of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain is meeting to decide the future of peace talks and the TTP ceasefire which expired on April 10.

A Taliban leader said it appeared that some unscrupulous elements were trying to create a misunderstanding between security forces and the Taliban to derail the grinding of the peace processor.

Two more gunned down in Quetta targeted killing
[DAWN] In yet another incident of assassination, armed gunnies killed two people in Quetta's troubled Sariab road area on Tuesday, police said.

Armed motorcyclists shot up a barber shop, killing two people. A child outside the barber shop also sustained serious bullet wounds and was rushed to Civil Hospital Quetta for medical treatment.

Imran Qureshi, the Superintendent of Police told Dawn.com that the victims belonged to Punjab and were working on Sariab road for a long time.

"The assailants sped away on their cycle of violence after the strike," he said.

Residents of the area blocked Sariab road to mourn the killing. Traffic in the area was suspended for more than an hour as the angry protesters chanted full-throated slogans against the administration for its failure to protect the lives of citizens.

Police and a huge contingent of Frontier Corps (FC) reached the spot and cordoned off the area to probe into the incident.

"This was an act of assassination," the SP said.

Militants threaten residents to vacate Peshawar neighbourhood
[DAWN] A pamphlet, attributed to the banned Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), was distributed in a neighbourhood of the Khyber Pakhtunhwa capital threatening residents, mostly Shia Mohammedans, to vacate the area in the next ten days, police said on Tuesday.

Residents of Pahari Pura's Manzoor Colony were warned of serious consequences failing to follow the forces of Evil warning.

The threatening pamphlet, with letter head of LI chief Lutfullah, said that the myrmidon outfit's shura (council) has decided to act against the colony, without elaborating what caused to offend it.

Lashkar-e-Islam -- a Bara-based myrmidon organization in Khyber tribal region led by Mangal Bagh
...a former bus driver, now head of the Deobandi bandido group Lashkar-e-Islam and the Terror of Khyber Agency...
-- was banned in 2008.

Police said they have launched an investigation to ascertain the pamphlet's authenticity. They said police contingent has been increased with more patrolling in the area.

it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the holy man was expelled from Bar Qambarkhel area after only six months owing to his bad boy views and differences with Haji Namdar, another myrmidon commander of the area.

Both Mufti Munir Shakir and Pir Saifur Rehman were forced to leave Bara after a jirga of local elders gave a consensus verdict following bloody festivities between the supporters of the two in early 2005. Mangal Bagh, a bus driver-turned-militant was elevated to the position of amir (chief) of Lashkar-e-Islam in May 2005.

Pak security forces demolished the house of Haji Rabat and destroyed the FM radio station set up in a mosque after they started the first military operation against Lashkar-e-Islam in mid-2005.

Iraq
Iraq Kurds Dig Trench on Syria Border to Block Militants
[An Nahar] Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region is digging a trench along its border with Syria to prevent the infiltration of hard boyz and smuggling from the war-racked country, officials say.

"The trench is designed to prevent the infiltration of members of terrorist groups and stop smugglers," Halkurd Mullah Ali, the front man for the Kurdish region's peshmerga security ministry, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Smugglers "began operating in these areas because the Syrian authorities lost control of them, and these areas became insecure," Ali said.

The trench is 17 kilometers (10 miles) long, two meters (yards) deep and three meters wide, and is "part of an Iraqi (federal) government strategy" to protecting the country's 600 kilometer border with Syria.

"We tossed in the slammer
You have the right to remain silent...
turbans and smugglers trying to infiltrate into Kurdistan," said peshmerga Brigadier General Hashem Yeti, adding that there were "requests from the people of the border areas to prevent the infiltration operations, which represents a threat to them."

But the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a powerful Syrian Kurdish organization, condemned the trench as an attempt to blockade the country's Kurds, and closed the border crossing with Iraqi Kurdistan in protest.

Hundreds of people have been waiting to cross since the border was closed on Saturday.

#1  Smugglers "began operating in these areas because the Syrian authorities lost control of them, and these areas became insecure"

For the Syrian government, that's a feature, not a problem.

#3  Maybe after they are done there they can come dig a trench along our southern border. Perhaps Arizona and Texas can hire them.

#4  Berms and trenches were used by the Marines to 'secure' specific towns in the Anbar Province and clean out the AQI and smuggler types.

According to our family's Marine relative, it worked pretty well. The honest folks used the designated entry/exits.

The 'less-than-honest' tried to use the more difficult routes and were easily identified and 'dealt with'.

Cleaned up several 'troubled' municipalities that way.

Militants target Iraq security ahead of polls
[Iran Press TV] Al-Qaeda-affiliated forces of Evil have stepped up their terrorist attacks in Iraq to disrupt its security in the run-up to the country's parliamentary elections, Press TV reports.

Militants from the so-celled Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), who have been fighting government troops in the country's western regions, including Anbar province, have increasingly targeted Iraqi security forces and civilians.

In their latest attempt, the ISIL forces of Evil closed all gates of a Euphrates river dam they control in the Iraqi city of Fallujah in Anbar on Monday.

The citizens of Fallujah have called on the Iraqi government to attack the al-Qaeda-linked forces of Evil as they believe this would put an end to the bloodshed in the city and other parts of the country.

"The forces of Evil bombarded bridges, cut off water and killed innocent people, now I think the government will carry out a military strike on Fallujah to eliminate the last stronghold of forces of Evil in Anbar," political analyst Adnan al-Siraj told Press TV.

On Monday, at least 15 people, including a policeman, were killed and several others injured in attacks across Iraq.

The country is preparing for parliamentary polls set for April 30.

3 Palestinians killed in mysterious explosion in Gaza
Practicing for ambassadorship?
Award-winning snark of the day there...
[Jpost] Three people were killed and several others were injured in an accidental explosion Wednesday in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian news portal Al Resalah reported.

The injured, between the ages of 20 and 30, were transferred to the European Hospital in Khan Younis in stable condition.

According to the Hamas-affiliated Al Resalah, the blast which killed the "martyrs" was caused by a fire that broke out in a house. However a spokesman for Hamas's Ministry of Health told the Bethlehem-based Ma'an News Agency that the circumstances behind the explosion were not clear.

Last month, a Hamas commander was killed in an "internal explosion" in Rafah.

According to Palestinian reports, nine other members of Hamas's al-Qassam brigades were injured in what was deemed a "work accident".

Hamas named 30-year-old Ibrahim Nagib al-Ghoul as the fatality from the blast.

Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the blast had occurred during a training session on producing explosive devices.

Syrian Army troops liberate town near capital
[Iran Press TV] Syrian Army troops continue to gain ground in their fight against foreign-backed gangs, and have taken full control of a town in northeast of the capital Damascus.

On Tuesday, Syrian soldiers carried out an operation and managed to liberate Assal al-Ward town in the mountainous al-Qalamoun region.

A number of snuffies were killed during intense festivities with Syrian government forces, while the rest fled to nearby regions.

The development comes a day after Syrian army units killed many gunnies and destroyed their hideouts in the towns of al-Sarkha, Bakha'a and al-Jibbeh in Qalamoun region.

The snuffies who were not killed escaped out to Housh Arab suburbs of the capital or to the Lebanese border and the army continues to chase them down.

Army units also recaptured the historic town of Ma'loula, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Damascus.

Also on Tuesday, Syrian troops engaged snuffies in Jouret al-Shayah, al-Hamidiyah, Bab Hood and Wadi al-Sayeh neighborhoods of the western province of Homs.

Syrian troops also destroyed several pickup trucks equipped with heavy machine guns in the al-Houla area.

In addition, Syrian troops stormed terrorist hideouts near al-Nasr Mountain in the northern countryside of Lattakia, leaving scores of foreign-backed gunnies dead and injured.

Syrian troops secure three more towns in Qalamoun
[Iran Press TV] The Syrian army has made more gains in its fight against foreign-backed turbans in the country, and defeated them in three towns in the strategic Qalamoun region, Press TV reports.

Syrian troops on Tuesday carried out successful operations against the turbans in the towns of Assal al-Ward, Housh Arab and Jab'adin.

The citizens in Jab'adin welcomed the Syrian soldiers by chanting slogans in their support and waving national flags.

"Militants kidnapped many of the town's residents, they only set them free if they received ransom money. They also fired mortars at us. We thank the Syrian army for restoring security," one of the residents of Jaba'deen told Press TV.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
reports said that the foreign-sponsored turbans tried to run away after Syrian troops managed to retake full control of the towns of Ma'loula and al-Sarkha in the Qalamoun region on Monday. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
they were chased down and defeated by government forces.

Syrian army units also killed many turbans and destroyed their hideouts in the towns of Bakha'a and al-Jibbeh in the region on Monday.
