Officials Say Explosion in Southern Afghanistan Kills 3
[AnNahar] Afghan officials say an kaboom near a southern cop shoppe has killed three people and maimed 17.

Samim Khpalwak, front man for the provincial governor, said the kaboom Tuesday morning struck the city of Kandahar, the capital of Kandahar province. Authorities initially believed a boom-mobile caused the kaboom, but later said they were unsure what happened.

Qayyum Pokhla, the head of Kandahar's regional hospital, says the blast killed three people, including two coppers and one woman. He said the kaboom maimed 17.

No group immediately grabbed credit for the attack.

Kandahar is the heartland of Taliban turbans and the city was the capital of the bad boys' government from 1996-2001.

Attacks on Afghan cops have intensified in recent weeks as the turbans mount their annual summer offensive.

Three Killed in Restaurant Car Bombing in Somali Capital
[AnNahar] Three people were killed and six maimed in a boom-mobile blast outside a popular restaurant in the center of the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, police said.

The attack is the latest in a string of bombings in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation, where Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab Islamists are fighting to topple the government.

"There are at least three dead, and six others have been injured," police officer Ahmed Warhere told AFP.

"A vehicle loaded with explosives was parked outside the restaurant."

No one immediately grabbed credit for the bombing, but the restaurant is located in the center of Mogadishu, where the Shabaab Islamists have carried out repeated attacks.

Bomb disposal experts killed in Benghazi
[LibyaHerald] Two Libyan army bomb disposal experts were killed today in Leithi as they were trying to diffuse booby-trap explosives left by members of the Islamist coalition, the Benghazi Revolutionaries' Shoura Council (BRSC). They were deactivating a device in Khaleej Street when a rocket-propelled grenade was fried at them. Both died instantly. They have been named as Alkilani Mohammed Al-Farsi and Abdelali Al-Dresi.

Otherwise, the city has been relatively quiet today compared to the heavy toll yesterday, although shells have continued to land randomly in various districts. Seven civilians were maimed in such incidents and taken to Jalaa Hospital today.

Yesterday, at least ten Libyan army soldiers were killed and 25 maimed in fighting, mainly in Leithi. BRSC casualties are unknown.

In addition, two civilians died as a result of random incidents -- one in Salmani as a result of a arbitrary missile landing, the other in the suburb of Driana, killed by a chance bullet. Missiles also landed in Hadaiq, Majouri and Buhdeima. As a result, local residents have been flowing to safer part of the city.

Four people, including a Paleostinian, were maimed in such attacks in Salmani.

Libya: Explosion outside Spanish embassy
[LibyaHerald] The Spanish embassy has become the latest diplomatic mission in Tripoli

to be attacked. An bomb left outside the building in the city's residential Ben Ashour district went kaboom! late last night. There were no casualties although there was some minor physical damage. Like almost all Western and Arab embassies, the Spanish mission is closed because of the security situation in the city, although the diplomatic police still maintain guard on the building.

(IS) has said it was responsible.

IS in Libya likewise grabbed credit for this month's attacks outside the South Korean and Moroccan embassies. In the case of the latter, an bomb was also left outside.

regime's Foreign Ministry in Tripoli and the continuing General National Congress have both condemned this latest attack, claiming that the attack was an attempt to "destabilise" the city, present a "false image" of a security problem and undermine the UN-brokered dialogue process.

Two days ago, for the same reasons, the regime's Interior Minister, Mohammed Sheiter, accused Operation Dignity and General Khalifa Hafter of being behind the embassy attacks.

Fighting was said to be heavy around midday near Zahra and a convoy of Dawn forces was seen heading to the near Tripoli International Airport to protect the area from any further movement by LNA forces.

In fighting some 30 kilometres west of Gharyan, at Abu Sheiba, three Gharyan fighters were killed. They have been named as field commander Mustafa Al-Talib and Mohammed Shtaiwi and Ahmed Al-Grari.

A number of missiles also landed near Gharyan causing slight material damage but no casualties.

According to Dawn it has managed to beat off and reverse a Libyan National Army (LNA) offensive. However,

IS “crucifies” family in Derna
[LibyaHerald] Horrific details have emerged of the murder yesterday of a well-known local family by Islamist hard boyz in Derna.

Eight members of the Harir Al-Mansouri family, including two women, were reported killed after IS accused one of the family of supporting the Libya National Army and demanded that he be surrendered. Another report says that the man was accused of killing a relative of an IS krazed killer last year.

When the family refused to hand the man over, IS forces allegedly started bombarding the house, killing eight of the family in the process. The festivities lasted for 12 hours.

Four men, named as Munaem Al-Harir Al-Mansouri, Khalid Al-Harir Al-Mansouri, Ibrahim Al-Harir Al-Mansouri and Abdulhamid Al-Haj Al-Harir Al-Mansouri were then taken out and publicly "crucified" as a warning to others not to challenge IS' authority in the town. Photos of three of the dead men have been circulating on the internet.

They were possibly already dead at the time. Islamic "crucifixion" is a punishment used by some fundamentalists against those accused of warring against Islam in which the dead bodies of those executed are left exposed for a number of days as a warning to others. It has been used by Islamists in Syria. It is also used occasionally by the authorities in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
.

The women have been named as Faiza Al-Harir Al-Mansouri and Hanan Al-Harir Al-Mansouri.

While the fighting was taking place, it is also reported that the Libyan Air Force, evidently made aware of the attack, then bombed IS forces, killing a number of them.

The government in Beida has condemned the killings.

Two Egyptian policemen killed by unidentified gunmen in Cairo
[Ynet] Two Egyptian coppers were killed after being shot by unidentified gunnies in Cairo on Tuesday evening, state media reported. Police Colonel Wael Tahoon and a recruit were shot before his house in a Cairo district, state news agency, MENA, said.

The website of the State-run Al-Ahram newspaper said the two coppers killed in a kaboom. The interior ministry officials were not immediately available for comment.

Egypt Court Jails Ousted President Morsi for 20 Years
[AnNahar] An Egyptian court sentenced ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison Tuesday for abuses against protesters but acquitted him of charges carrying a possible death penalty.

Morsi was convicted of ordering the arrest and torture of demonstrators involved in festivities in 2012 when he was president, in a verdict Amnesia Amnesty International denounced as a "travesty of justice."

The reaction from the United States was more circumspect, with the State Department saying it was concerned by the sentences.

Fourteen others were convicted of the same charges, with the Cairo court jailing most of them for 20 years. The court acquitted the defendants of inciting murder in connection with the deaths of a journalist and two protesters during the December 5, 2012 festivities outside the presidential palace in Cairo.

Morsi, dressed in a white prison uniform and standing in a soundproof cage, raised his fists when the verdict was announced. Defence lawyers said they would appeal, while rights groups voiced alarm at the ruling, the first in a series of trials Morsi is facing.

"This verdict shatters any remaining illusion of independence and impartiality in Egypt's criminal justice system," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty's deputy Middle East and North Africa director. She called for a full retrial or the ex-president's release.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Washington would "review the basis" for the court's decision, and that it was "concerned by these sentences."

"All Egyptians are entitled to equal and fair treatment before the law," she added.

Other Brotherhood leaders have been sentenced to death, and Tuesday's decision to acquit Morsi on the incitement to murder charge surprised some.

"We were expecting them to be convicted of murder," said Ramy Ghanem, a lawyer for an anti-Morsi protester maimed in the festivities. "But the sentences are not bad. We were expecting life in prison, but then 20 years is not very different," he said. A life sentence in Egypt is 25 years.

Mortar Fire Kills Two Children in Egypt's Sinai
[AnNahar] Mortar fire killed two five-year-old boys Monday in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, officials said, hours after a bomb killed three soldiers in the area where troops are fighting an Islamist insurgency.

Mortar rounds struck a residential area south of the town of Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai late on Monday in which the two boys were killed, medics said.

Earlier a roadside kaboom struck an armored military vehicle on the Egyptian side of the divided city of Rafah on the Gazoo border, killing an army officer and two soldiers.

Another soldier was also maimed when the bomb hit the vehicle in the Tawil al-Amir district.

group, which controls swathes of Iraq and Syria, said they carried out the kaboom.

"We blew up an armoured vehicle of the apostate army and everyone inside was killed," IS Sinai Province said on a Twitter account attributed to the group.

In a separate incident, four IS fighters were killed when they attempted to attack a checkpoint in North Sinai's scenic provincial capital of El-Arish, police said.

The army meanwhile said on its Facebook page that 57 "terrorists" were killed over the past 10 days in festivities with security forces in the peninsula.

Formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the IS group has carried out repeated deadly attacks on the security forces in its peninsula stronghold.

The attacks have come despite stringent security measures imposed by the army in the province, including a night-time curfew and the creation of a buffer zone along the Gazoo border to prevent bully boyz infiltrating from the Paleostinian territory.

Boko Haram Kill Two Soldiers in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar] Two soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
rocket attack on a military vehicle in the northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n town of Baga, residents told AFP on Tuesday.

Six other soldiers and a civilian vigilante were critically injured when their vehicle hit a mine planted by the Islamists just outside the town in Borno state on Sunday, they added.

The attack and the mine kaboom happened as the military escorted some 1,200 people from Baga on a brief return visit to their hometown from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

Boko Haram seized the town on the shores of Lake Chad on January 3 and is suspected of killing hundreds in what was feared to have been the worst massacre in the six-year insurgency.

Nigeria's military said it had recaptured the town in late February, as an operation also involving Chad, Niger and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
stepped up to drive out the snuffies from occupied territory.

"Boko Haram fired a rocket-propelled grenade on a military van in an ambush in Baga which killed two soldiers and destroyed the vehicle," said resident Karimbe Maina.

The soldiers were driving back to their base outside Baga to mobilize more troops to help drag an armored vehicle stuck in the mud across town on the shores of Lake Chad, he added.

"Following the attack which killed two soldiers there was a prolonged shootout ‎between soldiers and the Boko Haram gunnies, which forced the gunnies to flee," said vigilante Haruna Shuaibu.

The attack disrupted the tour, forcing the residents to leave their badly damaged and pillaged town as quickly as possible, said Musa Bulama who was on the visit.

The visit was initially planned for Sunday but was temporarily stalled after a military vehicle set off a mine in Kauyen Kuros village, six kilometers (four miles) from Baga.

"We had to spend the night in Kauyen Kuros as a result of the kaboom which injured six soldiers and a member of the civilian vigilantes giving security cover to the convoy," said Bulama.‎

Military front man Chris Olukolade said on February 21 that troops had to clear landmines planted by Boko Haram before being able to enter Baga.

Nigeria claims to have Boko Haram on the run and that troops are poised to storm the group's Sambisa Forest stronghold by the handover of power to president-elect Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

But with increasing talk of some of the 1.5 million people forced to flee the fighting returning home, the Baga residents said the area was still infested with bully boy fighters.

"Boko Haram are still in the bushes around Baga and move in and out of the town unchallenged because soldiers confine themselves to their base in Mile 4 and only carry periodic patrols of the town," said Maina.

Bulama added: "The area is still not safe. Boko Haram are very much around in the surrounding areas. No one should contemplate moving back into the area because it is dangerous‎."

Arabia
40 die in Soddy airstrikes in Ibb
The Saudi warplanes targeted a bridge in al-Dalil in the Yemeni province of Ibb, claiming at least 40 easy targets and wounding dozens of civilians.

The raid also inflicted heavy materialistic losses and blocked Sanaa-Taiz highway.

Dozens of Yemenis were killed or wounded in Harad governorate in the province of Hijja by the Saudi airstrikes.

The Yemeni army and public committees continued their anti-bad guy operations across the country, including the province of Shabwa.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 24 days now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led operation has so far killed over 2,600 Yemenis, including hundreds of targets that don't shoot back. The attacks have also left thousands of people injured.

Argentina Court Throws Out Case Against Kirchner Again
[AnNahar] An Argentine prosecutor on Monday again rejected a case against President Cristina Kirchner for allegedly protecting Iranian officials accused of orchestrating a deadly 1994 bombing.

Prosecutors had been seeking to relaunch the case that was being brought by their late colleague Alberto Nisman, who died mysteriously on January 18 as he prepared to publicly accuse Kirchner of shielding high-ranking Iranians suspected of ordering the attack on a Buenos Aires Jewish center.

Investigators have not confirmed if his death was a suicide or a homicide, as his family has claimed.

The case set out by Nisman has been brought to several different courts.

Prosecutor Javier de Luca on Monday ruled that it was impossible to move the case forward since many of the matters referred to "are not crimes," according to a statement.

An appeal to the Supreme Court is the only possible remaining legal step, though one has not been filed.

The long-unsolved bombing at the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association killed 85 people and wounded 300.

Nisman had accused Iran of ordering the attack via Hizbullah.

Four days before his death, he filed a report accusing Kirchner, Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and other figures close to the government of protecting Iranian officials, including former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, in exchange for oil and trade benefits.

Nisman was found dead in his Buenos Aires apartment of a gunshot wound to the head on the eve of congressional hearings where he was due to present his allegations.

Paris Extremist's Misfire Thwarts Imminent Attack on Church
[AyePee] An Islamic extremist with an arsenal of loaded guns was only prevented from opening fire on Sunday morning churchgoers because he accidentally shot himself, French officials said.
A very nasty wound that. Does it hurt when I press on it? Can you tell us anything more please ?
The 24-year-old computer science student, who was also suspected in the death of a young woman whose body was found on Sunday just ahead of his arrest, had been flagged as a risk last year and earlier this year but there was no specific reason to open a judicial investigation, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Wednesday.

A French security official, who was not authorized to publicly release details, said the suspect -- an Algerian who had lived in France for several years -- was arrested in Paris Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance. He was waiting outside for first aid when police arrived at the scene. They discovered a blood trail leading to his car, which contained loaded guns and notes about potential targets.

"Documents were also found and they prove, without any ambiguity, that the individual was preparing an imminent attack, in all probability, against one or two churches," Cazeneuve said.

In the man's apartment, in southeastern Paris, more weapons were found as well as Islamic extremist material, the official said. There was no immediate evidence that the suspect had direct ties to any organized groups, the official said.

Aurelie Chatelain, a 32-year-old Frenchwoman visiting Paris for a training session for her work, was found shot to death on Sunday morning in her car. The security official said Chatelain appeared to have been killed at random and ballistics evidence linked her death to the suspect.

"The terrorists target France to divide us" said Prime Minister Manuel Valls at a news conference Wednesday.

France has been on edge since the Jan. 7-9 attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket left 20 people dead, including the three gunmen. In that case, at least two of the gunmen had been flagged to French intelligence -- and the third had been recently released from prison after serving a sentence involving his ties to Islamic extremists -- but surveillance was called off months before the attack.
Update from An Nahar at 1:45 pm ET:
The 24-year-old IT student Sid Ahmed Ghlam's plans were exposed purely by chance after he called an ambulance saying he had been shot during an armed robbery at his Paris home, prosecutor Francois Molins told journalists.
"Vicious, they were! And they left all sorts of nasty, icky things in my car and apartment, too!"
Police uncovered DNA evidence linking him to the murder of a woman who was found shot dead in her car over the weekend near the capital.
Those police scientists have been working flat out on this one. This morning they only had put together her bullet with his gun.
The suspect, who was admitted to a Paris hospital after his arrest, was known to intelligence services over comments on social networks expressing his desire to go and fight in Syria alongside jihadists, said Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.
"IF I want to fight jihad
(And I do, most truly)
THEN I must go to Syria, where they've got the best jihading around.
BUT how to decide whether Al Nusra or ISIS?"
Police called to the scene where Ghlam was wounded found traces of his blood in car as well as a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol, a revolver, bulletproof vests, several cellphones, a laptop and documents on "potential targets and how to carry out attacks," said Molins.

Another three Kalashnikovs, police armbands and vests, and documents in Arabic mentioning jihadist groups Islamic State and al-Qaida were found at his home.
All in all a respectable collection for the aspiring known wolf...
The city prosecutor said that Ghlam had told police "far-fetched" tales of how he had received the bullet wound to his leg, such as that he had shot himself while trying to throw his weapons into the Seine river.

Analysis of his communications equipment indicated Ghlam "was in touch with another person who could be in Syria on how to carry out an attack, with the latter clearly asking him to target a church," said Molins.

A source close to the investigation said Ghlam appeared to have carefully calculated how long it would take police to respond.
Only useful for that police station and that location during those conditions, surely...
Several members of his entourage and family have since been detained,
Good.
some of whom sympathize with radical Islam, sources close to the investigation said. On Wednesday, his 25-year-old girlfriend was taken in for questioning. The sources said she was a convert to Islam and was the only woman in her neighborhood who wore Islamic garb.
More about the murdered Frenchwoman at the link, for those interested.

Off whoring for Islam?
Attorney Hassan Shibly spoke at a Birmingham mosque on Monday on behalf of the parents of the young woman, whom he identified only as Hoda.

Shibly said Hoda left in November after being "brainwashed" for an undetermined length of time. He says the woman's actions go against the family's wishes and against the teachings of Islam.
It was her second 'brainwashing.' The first brainwashing session brought her to Alabama.
The front man added that Hoda's family has been in contact with U.S. law enforcement and government officials since she disappeared.

Members of the Birmingham Moslem community were meeting on Monday evening to discuss how to protect other children from the influence of holy warriors.

In December last year, the Golra police had started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Lakhvi for allegedly kidnapping Anwar Khan, an Afghan national, six years ago.

He was implicated in the case soon after the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) had released him on bail in the Mumbai attacks case.

Following his release on bail, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) hearing a petition, also suspended the detention order against Lakhvi.

The police then kept Lakhvi into custody after registering the kidnapping case against him.

However,

him in kidnapping case.

After the prosecution in this matter could not provide sufficient evidence against Lakhvi, the judicial magistrate Naveed Khan acquitted him of the offence.

Clashes in Southwest Pakistan Kill Two Soldiers, Five Rebels
[AnNahar] Two paramilitary soldiers and five hard boyz were killed in gunbattles on Tuesday in Pakistain's restive southwestern province of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, officials said, highlighting the challenges to a huge Chinese investment project.

The first clash was in Gwadar district, where Beijing has taken over a deepwater seaport that will be the starting point of a $46 billion "economic corridor" of roads, pipelines and rail links to Kashgar in western China.

Insurgents fired rockets at the air traffic control tower of Pasni airport in Gwadar district late on Monday, causing some damage but no casualties, paramilitary Frontier Corps front man Manzoor Ahmed told AFP.

Security forces mounted a search after the attack and this culminated in a gunbattle with hard boyz in the Zarin Bogh area, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Gwadar.

"Two soldiers were martyred and an turban was killed and another captured in a clash with security forces," Ahmed said.

Provincial home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani confirmed the clash.

Sarbaz Baloch, a front man for the Baloch Liberation Army rebel group, grabbed credit for attack on the airport in a call to journalists.

Separately, hard boyz attacked security forces in the Mashqay area of Awaran district, with troops killing four turbans, security officials told AFP.

Earlier this month the Balochistan Liberation Front claimed an attack in the province that left 20 construction workers from elsewhere in Pakistain dead, the bloodiest separatist incident since 2006.

Resource-rich Balochistan is the largest of Pakistain's four provinces, but its roughly seven million inhabitants have long complained they do not receive a fair share of its gas and mineral wealth.

Rebels began their fifth insurgency against the state in 2004, with hundreds of soldiers and Death Eaters killed in the fighting since then.

The desperately poor province is also riven by sectarian strife and Islamist violence.

Iraq
50 ISIS fighters killed near Kirkuk
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least two Peshmarga fighters and some 50 Islamic State (ISIS) militants were killed in fierce clashes Tuesday morning in the ethnically-mixed village of Sahl al-Malih, some 30 kilometers south of Kirkuk city.

Field General Tariq Koyi of the Second Peshmerga Infantry in the area told Rudaw that intense house-to-house clashes took place in the early hours after ISIS militants infiltrated the village overnight.

“As far as I know we have lost two Peshmerga,” Koyi said. “But at least four dozen Daesh (ISIS) bodies are in our hands now,” he said, adding the situation was now under control.

Another Kurdish military source on the ground, who wished to remain anonymous, told Rudaw that at least 40 militants supported by “some local collaborators” had entered the village at 5 am Tuesday and started to shoot at Peshmerga positions.

U.S.-led Coalition Carries Out 22 Strikes against IS in Iraq
[AnNahar] The U.S.-led coalition said Tuesday its warplanes carried out 22 strikes in Iraq over 24 hours targeting the Islamic State

jihadist group north and west of Baghdad.

This was the second 24 hour period in a row of a larger-than-usual number of coalition strikes against IS, after it carried out 26 from Sunday to Monday.

Nine of the strikes were in Anbar province west of Baghdad, where security forces are battling to expand their control beyond the pockets of territory they currently hold.

North of the capital, there were seven more in Nineveh, the first province to fall to an IS offensive last June, four near the contested town of Baiji and two near IS-held Hawijah.

Targets included a bomb factory, IS units and equipment and buildings used by the jihadists.

Security forces performed dismally in the early days of the bully boy drive last June, which overran much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland.

But they have since managed to regain significant territory from the jihadists, with support from pro-government paramilitaries, the U.S.-led coalition and Iran.

IS Claims Execution of 11 Pro-government Fighters in Iraq
[AnNahar] The Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group claimed to have executed 11 pro-government fighters in Iraq, in a series of photographs shared online on Tuesday.

The first picture shows masked men armed with assault rifles marching a line of orange jumpsuit-clad prisoners across a field.

The captives are then shown kneeling in front of the gunnies with their hands bound.

The final photographs show a row of bodies face-down in front of the gunnies with blood pooling on the ground.

Text accompanying the photographs said the men were killed in Salaheddin province, north of Baghdad, the scene of fierce fighting last month in which government forces recaptured its capital Tikrit.

Captions identified them as members of the Popular Mobilization paramilitary units which have been fighting against the jihadists alongside the army.

The Islamic State group led an offensive last June that overran large areas north and west of Baghdad, sweeping security forces aside.

Baghdad turned to the Popular Mobilization units -- which are dominated by Iranian-backed Shiite militias -- to bolster its flagging forces, and has since been able to regain significant ground from IS.

Southeast Asia
One Tanker Attacked in SE Asia Every Two Weeks, Says Piracy Watchdog
[AnNahar] Pirates attack one small coastal oil tanker every two weeks in the waters off Southeast Asia, which remained the world's piracy hotspot in the first quarter, the International Maritime Bureau said Tuesday.

Southeast Asia saw 38 pirate attacks during January-March or 70 percent of the global total of 54, according to the latest quarterly report by the bureau's Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Centre.

"The frequency of these hijackings in Southeast Asia is an increasing cause for concern," the IMB's director Pottengal Mukundan said in a statement, warning that attacks could increase further if the problem is not addressed.

The 54 global incidents represented a 10 percent increase over the first quarter of 2014, the report said.

There were 245 attacks for all of last year, the IMB had said earlier.

Indonesian waters remained the most piracy-prone, seeing 21 attacks in the first quarter.

The report indicated a continued shift in the world piracy problem over the past few years towards Southeast Asia, and away from the past hotspots of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

The latter two saw zero attacks in the first three months of the year as an international naval patrol off East Africa -- launched in response to an earlier spike in violent attacks by mostly Somali-based pirates -- continued to bear fruit.

But the IMB said Southeast Asian hijackings were "occurring at least every two weeks and becoming an increasing and worrying cause for concern".

"A number of these incidents have occurred in international waters, and a robust and coordinated regional response is required in order to counter these threats," it added.

Most Southeast Asian attacks involved "armed gangs targeting small coastal tankers to steal their cargoes of fuel", typically by siphoning it to another waiting vessel.

Pirates took 140 seafarers as hostages worldwide during the course of attacks in the quarter, compared to 46 during the same period in 2014.

Globally, 13 crew members were assaulted, three injured and one killed, the report said.

Southeast Asian piracy had been significantly reduced over the past decade by stepped-up regional cooperation and maritime patrols, but has re-emerged.

Much of the world's trade passes through the region's shipping lanes such as the South China Sea and the Malacca Strait, which separates Malaysia and Indonesia.

Dozens killed in fighting in southern Syria, activists say
[Ynet] Fierce festivities between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters in the country's south killed dozens on both sides over the past two days as rebel factions regained much of the ground they lost earlier, activists said Tuesday.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting, which began Monday in the southern province of Daraa, killed 37 rebels as well as 22 government troops. On Tuesday, the Syrian air force struck several areas in Daraa province, the Observatory said.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group that tracks the Syrian civil war, said the violence in Daraa left at least 27 people dead on Monday alone.

Ex-Lebanon official admits to carrying explosives from Syria
[Ynet] A former Lebanese minister charged with plotting a wave of bombings at Syria's behest confessed to transporting explosives into the country in collaboration with Syrian intelligence, his lawyer said Tuesday, arguing that his client was the victim of entrapment.

Ex-Information Minister Michel Samaha acknowledged during a session of his trial on Monday that he brought explosives from Syria into Leb, working in collaboration with Syrian intelligence and a Lebanese agent. But his lawyer, Sakhr al-Hashem, said Samaha denied any role in selecting targets for the planned attacks -- said to target a Sunni Moslem politician and Moslem holiday banquets -- that were ultimately foiled by Lebanese authorities.

Syrian rebels attack regime positions in Aleppo
Aleppo, Syria – On Tuesday, clashes renewed between Syrian rebels and pro-regime forces in the Rashideen and Salahuddin districts of Aleppo in northern Syria, amid attempts by opposition fighters to advance in the strategic neighborhood of Rashideen which is considered a main supply line to the pro-regime forces in Aleppo.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, documentation activist Mohammed al-Zahrawi said that the clashes began with the early morning hours in the southwestern part of the neighborhood of Rashideen where the opposition forces were able to seize new buildings following the partial withdrawal of pro-Assad forces.

At least two pro-regime solders were killed in the clashes, while the armed opposition lost four of its fighters during Tuesday’s operations.

70 Syrian soldiers die near Idlib
The headlines misleading. They didn't drop dead of heart attacks or terminal indigestion.
Militant fighters of al-Nusra Front (Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda) were reportedly engaged in clashes against Syrian regime forces in the countryside of Idlib.

The clashes took place in the city of Ariha of Idlib province during the last two days. Pro-Nusra sources reported the death of at least 70 soldiers of the regime’s army during the clashes.

The al-Nusra Front issued a statement, of which ARA News received a copy, saying that a number of jihadists (suicide bombers) were able to infiltrate a regime-held military center in Ariha city, west of Idlib, and carry out “a strategic operation against the Syrian regime forces and Shiite militias there”.

The Front confirmed that its fighters fought fierce clashes with what it called “thugs” who were stationed in a secondary-school building and a health clinic in the city, adding that two of their fighters carried out a “jihadist” operation in the regime-held center.

Kurds intensify anti-ISIS operations in Syria’s Hasakah
On Tuesday the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) launched an extensive assault in the countryside of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in an attempt to eradicate militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the province of Hasakah, in northeastern Syria, military sources said.

Speaking to ARA News, A.B., a YPG fighter in Sere Kaniye’s frontline said (under the condition of anonymity) that the Kurdish forces mobilized some 380 fighters into the anti-IS major frontline, aiming at breaking into IS-held positions and fortifications in the southern countryside of the city of Sere Kaniye in the province of Hasakah.

IS Beheads Opposition Fighters in Damascus Suburb
[AnNahar] The Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group beheaded overnight two opposition fighters accused of fighting the Lion of Islam group in a southern Damascus suburb, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said Tuesday.

"IS executed two men in south Damascus by beheading" after they were accused of being traitors, the Britannia-based Observatory said.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP IS had kidnapped the fighters from Qadam, a Damascus neighborhood, and beheaded them in Hajar al-Aswad, a suburb of the capital.

IS has a relatively limited presence in south Damascus, with its forces concentrated in the outskirts of Qadam and Hajar al-Aswad.

The incident is the third time its holy warriors are reported to have carried out beheadings in and around the capital.

On March 21, IS beheaded three fighters, also accusing them of being traitors, in Hajar al-Aswad.

And after IS seized control of large portions of the Paleostinian Yarmuk camp this month, following an attack launched from Hajar al-Aswad, the group executed a number of Paleostinian fighters there.

Qadam has been relatively stable for the past eight months, since a truce deal between Syrian government forces and rebels in the district.
