14 Military Operations Underway Across Afghanistan: MoD
[Tolo News] Afghan military forces are engaged with 14 operations around the country, clashing with forces of Evil in nine provinces, officials from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Friday.

The counter-insurgency clearing operations are being conducted in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, Ghazni, Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
, Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
, Kunar, Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
, Faryab, Kunduz and other parts of the country, MoD front man Dawlat Waziri said.

"Right now, we have 14 operations in nine provinces of the country, some which were planned and several still ongoing," Waziri said. "In Moqur district of Ghazni province, in which 37 forces of Evil were killed and 26 other injured, seven masked gunnies were also among the dead [...] and we don't have any casualties so far."

The operations come after months of deteriorating security around the country, with a deadly Daesh-claimed suicide kaboom in Nagarhar province and a high-profile ambush on Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers in Badakhshan province. The government has received criticism for not taking more decisive and strategic action against bully boy groups sooner.

"We are concerned that if the central government does not take action quickly regarding security in Kunduz, soon, the forces of Evil will take the control of this province," Kunduz MP Fatema Aziz said on Friday.

On Thursday night, Kunduz Police Chief Abdul Saboor Nasrati said Taliban forces of Evil attacked a number of security posts in the province and clashed with the security forces for several hours, ultimately leaving two coppers and 22 forces of Evil dead.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
officials in Faryab province also said that forces of Evil attacked military outposts on Thursday night. "Four enemies have been killed in the attack and three other of them were maimed," Provincial Police Chief Mohammad Nabi Elham said.

Tunisia Says Clashes Kill 2 Soldiers, 10 Jihadists
[AnNahar] Two Tunisian soldiers and 10 presumed jihadists have been killed in festivities in rugged terrain near the border with Algeria this week, the defense ministry said on Friday.

"Another two soldiers have been martyred and seven maimed in this army operation on Mount Salloum," front man Belhassen Oueslati told AFP.

He said the soldiers were killed Thursday, and that 10 jihadists had died in festivities that were ongoing, without elaborating "in order to preserve the operation's secrecy."

An army corporal was killed Wednesday in the mountainous Kasserine region, which has been the site of regular festivities between forces of Evil and soldiers since the end of 2012.

Tunisia has seen an upsurge in Islamic extremism since longtime president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was tossed in a 2011 revolution.

Jihadist attacks since then that have claimed the lives of dozens of members of the security forces.

The bloodiest single attack was in July 2014, when jihadists killed 15 soldiers on Mount Chaambi, considered to be a main rear base of the Death Eaters, on the border with Algeria.

Air Strikes Pound Yemen Rebel Positions as Clashes Rage
[AnNahar] Saudi-led coalition air strikes hit a camp housing rebel troops in Yemen's third city Taez on Friday, after a night of festivities and raids throughout the war-hit country, residents said.

Warplanes struck the camp, which was being used by a rebel army unit loyal to ousted president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
in central Taez, they said.

The main southern city of Aden also came under coalition fire as festivities between supporters of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and rebels raged until dawn, pro-government Lions of Islam told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Residents in Yemen's eastern Marib province also reported overnight air strikes and festivities between local rustics and rebel forces -- Shiite Huthis allied with Saleh's loyalist troops.

AFP could not immediately obtain a casualty toll.

#1  Never start something that you cannot finish. It appears that this is what the Saudis have done with the Yemen problem. If the Saudis went into Yemen and destroyed the enemy with full overwhelming force, then they would have taught the Iranians a lesson and sent them packing.

Saudis have lots of money and hardware. They do not have the depth to quicken the tempo and solve their Yemen problem. The Paks do not seem very enthusiastic about supporting Saudis with troops. Iran spends $4 to $6 billion a year on regional military mischief, I read, so they can keep working on the Saudis through a thousand knife cuts and slashes. Iran can keep harassing the Saudis on a level and tempo that is low enough to avoid a Saudi nuclear response. Wear the Saudis down and work on internal destabilization. Iran is playing a long game to become the regional hegemon. Only trouble is that this game is like playing with blasting caps on a stack of dynamite boxes. The whole thing can go south very quickly.

Tajikistan kills Chelyabinsk Islamist
[RFE/RL] Police in Panj, a city on Tajikistan's Afghan border, have killed a Russian citizen suspected of being an Islamist.

Panj city police department officials said that local law enforcement officers shot Semyon Nagebin, who is from Chelyabinsk, late on April 23 after escaping from a local hospital with two pistols he forcibly took from police officers. According to officials, Nagebin was gunned down after he began shooting at police.

Nagebin had been treated in the hospital after he was injured while trying to illegally cross the Afghan border on April 15. Authorities said that Nagebin called himself "Salim" and criticized Tajik officials, saying they "not real Muslims".

The report from Tajik officials comes a day after Russian officials said that an alleged member of the banned Islamist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir had been detained in Chelyabinsk. Several Hizb ut-Tahrir members have been arrested or sentenced in recent months in the Chelyabinsk region, which borders Kazakhstan and Russia's primarily Muslim region of Bashkortostan.

Italy arrests suspected bin Laden bodyguards, Peshawar bombers
[DAWN] Italian police said on Friday they had dismantled a network of gunnies they suspect of having had ties to the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
and being behind one of Pakistain's deadliest kabooms -- October 2009 bombing in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
's Meena Bazaar, which left more than 100 dead and over 200 people injured.

A six-year investigation that began with a probe into illegal immigration, led to police on the island of Sardinia ordering the arrest of 18 people in coordinated raids across Italia -- nine of these suspects have been tossed in the clink
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Prosecutor Mauro Mura told a presser in Cagliari, Sardinia that the network may also have plotted to attack the Vatican in 2010, when a man suspected of being a potential jacket wallah was in Italia.

Mario Carta, an officer in the DIGOS anti-terrorism unit that carried out the investigation, acknowledged there was no firm evidence of such a conspiracy, only "strong suspicions" based on wiretapped conversations in which the suspects had spoken "in ironic terms about the pope".

The alleged key figures in the network were Khan Sultan Wali, a shopkeeper and long-term resident of Olbia, Sardinia and an unidentified imam who carried out missionary work in Brescia and Bergamo in northern Italia, according to sketchy details provided by prosecutors at a presser.

The arrest warrants accuse the suspects of belonging to "an organization dedicated to transnational criminal activities inspired by Al-Qaeda and other radical organizations pursuing armed struggle against the West and insurrection against the current government of Pakistain."

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano described the swoop as "an extraordinary operation" that demonstrated the efficiency of the security services.

Vatican front man Federico Lombardi played down the significance of the incident. "This concerns a 2010 scenario that didn't materialise. It has no relevance today and there is no reason for particular concern," he told news hounds.

"With one sole investigation that started in 2009 we have succeeded in not only dismantling a network of people traffickers but also (detaining) several individuals accused of conspiring with terrorist aims and others of involvement in attacks," Alfano said.

Wiretap recordings suggest two members of the network were part of bin Laden's security detail before his slaying by US special forces in Pakistain in May 2011, according to a police statement. Others remained in contact with the late Al-Qaeda leader's relatives after his death.

Some of the men arrested or being sought are suspected of involvement in the October 2009 bombing of the Meena Bazaar in Peshawar, which left more than 100 dead and over 200 people injured.

Carta said there was evidence that the attack was substantially planned and financed from Olbia and that Italia-based gunnies had taken part in it.

Reacting to the news in international media, Pakistain's Foreign Office officials said they have contacted embassy in Rome and asked them to confirm the nationality of those suspects being arrested by Italian government.

Many of the victims of the attack were women and kiddies. At the time, the authorities blamed the Taliban for carrying out the attack in reprisal for anti-militant actions by government forces. The Taliban denied being involved. Khan Sultan Wali is one of the leaders of the small community on Sardinia, a sleepy island that is a holiday playground for celebrities and some of the world's richest people.

According to police, the alleged radical network was involved in smuggling Pak and Afghan nationals into Europe through Italia, either by securing temporary visas via contacts with corrupt businessmen or helping applicants fraudulently present themselves as victims of ethnic or religious persecution who should be granted asylum in Europe.

Pak activist gunned down in Karachi
[VOA] A Pakistani activist who ran the Second Floor cafe was gunned down late Friday by unknown gunmen in Karachi. Sabeen Mahmud and her mother were returning home from the cafe when they were attacked in her car. She died on en route to the hospital. Her mother, who was also shot, remains in critical condition.

Senior police official Tariq Dharejo said, "Two gunmen on a motorcycle shot her," adding that police were investigating the murder.

Conceived as a bookstore and cafe patterned after the old coffeehouse culture of Lahore and Karachi, Mahmud's cafe says on its website that it came from a desire to enact transformational change in urban Pakistani society.

Earlier that day, Mahmud had hosted an event there about rights abuses in Baluchistan province, featuring two prominent Baluch activists, Mama Abdul Qadeer and Farzana Baluch, as well as others. The talk was to have been held earlier this month at a university in Lahore, but officials blocked it.

group holy warriors in Ramadi, the capital of western Anbar.

Anbar police Col. Mahadi Abbas says the forces recaptured the al-Houz bridge on the Euphrates river on Friday, after fierce festivities with ISIS holy warriors in the western section of Ramadi.

Abbas says the al-Houz bridge was controlled by the ISIS group for several months and served as the main route supply for the Death Eaters.

The security situation in Ramadi sharply deteriorated after the ISIS group seized three villages around the city, forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

In recent days Iraqi soldiers and police have been able to secure the center of Ramadi and push the holy warriors back from some areas of the city.

NPA leader, wife arrested in Batangas
[Manila Times] Philippine security forces have captured a leader of the communist New People's Army and his wife in Batangas.

Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said Norberto Boricco, alias Isaw, and his wife who uses the noms de guerre Indi and Eldi were arrested by the Philippine military and national police in Barangay Niogan, Lemery, Batangas, on Thursday. The couple have outstanding arrest warrants for their involvement in murders and frustrated murders perpetrated in Samar in the Visayas.

The military said Borrico is the front secretary and finance officer of the NPAs operating in the municipalities of Northern Samar. Borrico is thought to have led the twin attacks in the towns of Oras and Arteche in Eastern Samar in 2003 and 2013 where 11 soldiers, two policemen, five pro-government militiamen and a civilian were killed.

Cabunoc said, "The arrest of the couple is a result of a tip from an NPA supporter who confessed that he was already tired of receiving extortion threats and demands from the NPA bandits."

Two bombings, shooting rock southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] Two bombings and a shooting occurred in southern Thailand on Friday morning.

A bomb housed in a gas cylinder was detonated near a power pole on a road in of Tak Bai district, Narathiwat. Shrapnel injured a father and his three young children, who were riding their motorcycle and sidecar back home from morning exercise at the beach. Security forces also found a steel box containing a bomb set to explode on contact at the base of a nearby power pole. It was destroyed using a high-pressure water hose.

In Pattani province, a bomb exploded as a security unit was on patrol in Mayo district. Some shrapnel hit their armored vehicle and two soldiers and two defense volunteers experienced a temporary hearing loss. Bomb disposal experts found three other bombs in the area and destroyed them.

On a road in Pattani's Thung Yang Daeng district, officials found a banner with a handwritten message saying "four will not die for nothing" on Friday morning. Rangers killed four men in a raid there in late March. An inquiry later found the four unarmed victims were not militants. In Kapo district, a rangers' base was attacked by gunmen on motorcycles. The two sides exchanged fire for about five minutes.

IS Jihadists Down Regime Aircraft in South Syria

shot down a regime aircraft near a key military airport in southern Syria Friday, with pro-IS Twitter accounts saying the jihadist group had captured the pilot, a monitor said.

The plane went down east of Khalkhalah airport, the only air base in Sweida province, a stronghold of the Druze minority that has largely avoided the bloodshed of Syria's war, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said the fate of any crew members remains unknown, but pro-IS accounts claimed the pilot had been captured.

State television, citing a military official, said a aircraft "crashed due to technical problems while completing a training exercise" near Khalkhalah, and that the search for the pilot was ongoing.

In its first major attack in Sweida, IS tried to storm the airport on April 11, but loyalist forces maintained control of it.

Khalkhalah lies along a major highway between Damascus and the regime-held city of Sweida.

Friday's incident was not the first time IS has successfully downed a military aircraft.

In February, it shot down a Jordanian warplane conducting air strikes on Syria as part of the international anti-IS coalition. Pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh was captured and subsequently burned alive.

Rebels make more gains in Jisr al-Shughour near Idlib
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian rebels on Friday have made more gains in the northwestern town of Jisr al-Shughour, taking control of al-Mentar base, less than a month after seizing control of Idlib, the historic provincial capital there.

At least 30 soldiers have been killed and maimed by rebels in al-Mentar base, also known as al-Hajez, field source told Zaman al-Wasl.

The opposition groups taking part in the new operation posted a statement online late Wednesday announcing the start of the offensive, which they call "Battle of Victory." They appealed to residents to stay inside "until God grants us and you victory and liberation," AP reported.

The conservative Islamic factions, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front are attacking government checkpoints in a sprawling agricultural plain south of the town as well as nearby military facilities, according to AP.

On Thursday, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday the rebels have taken five checkpoints since the offensive began, including two near Jisr al-Shugour, in fighting that has killed at least eight rebels and an unknown number of government troops.

The operation keeps the pressure on beleaguered government forces in the area just weeks after the rebels captured Idlib city, the historic provincial capital. Forces loyal to Bashir al-Assad maintain control of Jisr al-Shughour as well as towns and military facilities in the province, but their hold looks increasingly shaky.
An Nahar adds:
Since the fighting erupted on Thursday, 30 regime troops and 43 rebels -- including 13 Chechen fighters -- have been killed, Abdel Rahman said.
