America’s Honor
Reams of words and gallons of ink and electrons appeared in print today in honour of Memorial Day. Here is one of the better ones I’ve seen today, posted with gratitude and in memory of those who stepped forward to keep us safe in a very dangerous world.
[PowerlineBlog] In observance of Memorial Day 2007 the Wall Street Journal published a brilliant column by Peter Collier to mark the occasion. The column remains timely and is accessible online here. I don’t think we’ll read or hear anything more thoughtful or appropriate to the occasion today. With the kind permission of Peter himself, here it is:

Once we knew who and what to honor on Memorial Day: those who had given all their tomorrows, as was said of the men who stormed the beaches of Normandy, for our todays. But in a world saturated with selfhood, where every death is by definition a death in vain, the notion of sacrifice today provokes puzzlement more often than admiration. We support the troops, of course, but we also believe that war, being hell, can easily touch them with an evil no cause for engagement can wash away. And in any case we are more comfortable supporting them as victims than as warriors.

We impoverish ourselves by shunting these heroes and their experiences to the back pages of our national consciousness. Their stories are not just boys’ adventure tales writ large. They are a kind of moral instruction. They remind of something we’ve heard many times before but is worth repeating on a wartime Memorial Day when we’re uncertain about what we celebrate. We’re the land of the free for one reason only: We’re also the home of the brave.

Afghanistan
Militants suffer casualties in Ghor airstrikes

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The anti-government armed turbans have suffered heavy casualties during the Arclight airstrikes conducted n northwestern Ghor province of Afghanistan, the Afghan Military said Saturday.

The First Brigade of the 207th Zafar Corps of the Afghan Military in the West said the airstrikes were carried out in support of the ground operations in Charsada district.

A statement released by the First Brigade of Zafar Corps states that the airstrikes left at least 20 turbans dead while at least 13 others sustained injuries.

The statement further adds that two commanders of the anti-government armed turbans identified as Mawlavi Abdul Hadi and Mawlavi Nasim were among those killed.

According to the First Brigade of Zafar Corps, the operations in Charsada are jointly being conducted by the Afghan army, police, and personnel of the other security institutions.

Back to back explosions heard in Jalabad city
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The sounds of two back to back kabooms were heard in Jalalabad city the quiet provincial capital of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..

Preliminary reports indicate the incident has taken place close to the Breshna Sherkat / State-owned Utility Directorate.

Provincial governor’s front man Ataullah Khogyani confirmed that the incident has taken place in Nursery Farm area of the city and at least two kabooms have taken place.

Khogyani further added that the two back to back kabooms have not caused any casualties.

Taliban suffer heavy casualties in US airstrikes in Ghazni
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Several Talibs were killed or maimed in a series of Arclight airstrikes carried out by the foreign forces in southeastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan.

The 203rd Thunder Corps of the Afghan Military in the Southeast said the airstrikes were carried out in Andar and Deh Yak districts of the province.

The source further added that the airstrikes left at least 16 faceless myrmidons dead while at least 28 others sustained injuries.

According to Thunder Corps, a Humvee armored vehicle, a pickup truck, and anti-aircraft heavy machine gun were also destroyed during the airstrikes.

In the meatime, the Thunder Corps said at least eight faceless myrmidons were killed and five others were maimed during a clash with the security forces in Ajrisan district.

Afghan soldiers suffer casualties in Helmand suicide attack
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers suffered casualties in a suicide attack in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, the local officials said.

The incident took place earlier today in the vicinity of Nad-e-Ali district after a suicide bomber detonated a Vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) near a military base.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Omar Zwak confirmed the incident and said at least two soldiers lost their lives after a suicide bomber detonated a mini truck packed with explosives in Nad-e-Ali district at around 7 am local time.

Zwak further added that the attack also left at least four Afghan soldiers wounded however there are no reports regarding their health condition.

In the meantime, reports emerging from the area suggest that at least sixteen army soldiers lost their lives or were wounded in the attack.

According to the statement, the army repelled an attack of the militias towards Medi and Harad districts of Hajjah province and destroyed four military vehicles, despite of the coalition heavy air cover. Air strike kills 4 in Yemen rebel-held capital
[AlAhram] A woman was among four people killed in an air strike that hit a petrol station in Yemen's rebel-held capital late Saturday, medical sources said.

Eleven people were maimed in the air strike on Sanaa, they said.

Witnesses said it took place just before sunset as people prepared to break the dawn-to-dusk Islamic fast of Ramadan.

It was not immediately clear who had carried out the strike.

On Friday, as reported here yesterday, the saga of Tommy Robinson entered a new chapter. British coppers pulled him off a street in Leeds, where, in his role as a citizen journalist, he was livestreaming a Facebook video from outside a courthouse. Inside that building, several defendants were on trial for allegedly being part of a so-called "grooming gang" -- a group of men, almost all Moslem, who systematically rape non-Moslem children, in some cases hundreds of them, over a period of years or decades. Some ten thousand Facebook viewers around the world witnessed Robinson's arrest live.

#3  For my part, I cannot for the life of me fathom why not a single prominent or powerful individual in all of the United Kingdom has come forward to challenge the mistreatment of Tommy Robinson – and thereby stand up for freedom of speech.

Unless of course, the English Defense League - being a 'far-right-wing, anti-Moslem' group - deserves to be thrashed for their views. Terrifying, indeed.

Usually, in the aftermath of a revolution, the first order of business is to make sure no one can run the same playbook against the newly-installed government. Our founding fathers had a different vision, not a mad grab for power, but a recognition that over time, all governments devolve towards suckitude. They didn't phrase it like that, of course, coming from a time when literacy was actually a thing, but the attitude shows up in our Constitution which is to a great degree a list of things the federal government is simply not allowed to do. The right to bear arms helps ensure that everyone stays in their lane.

2 policemen among four killed in Quetta firing
[DAWN] Two coppers and two alleged miscreants were killed in two subsequent firing incidents at Quetta's Sirki Road on Sunday evening, Quetta police said.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Razzaq Cheema, unknown miscreants opened fire on two coppers, identified as Abdul Rasheed and Bashir Shah, in Capri Cinema area of Sirki road.

The officers, who were on their way home, went titzup, he said. In the meantime, a police party from a nearby post rushed to the scene of the crime and killed two alleged attackers. One of the attackers managed to escape in an injured state, he added.

Meanwhile, “troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) repulsed the attack, leaving one personnel and three militants killed,” the source added.

The attack, according to the source, “is the third in 24 hours by Islamic State against south of Mosul.”

Islamic State military official arrested in western Mosul: Commander

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi police have arrested Islamic State military official in Mosul city in Nineveh, a security source was quoted saying on Sunday.

“Based on information from the intelligence, an Islamic State military official called Nezar Saleh was arrested in al-Yabesat region in western Mosul,” Brig. Gen. Hamad al-Jabour, commander of Nineveh police, told Anadolu agency.

The suspect, according to Jabouri, “used to be in charge of booby trapping of vehicles in Aski-Mosul region, while the militant group was in control of the city.”

Over thirty Islamic State members arrested in security operation, west of Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have arrested 35 Islamic State members in west of Mosul, a security source was quoted saying on Sunday.

“Iraqi local troops in west of Mosul carried out an operation in regions of al-Nabi Sheet, al-Dawasa, Bab Jedeid, al-Farouq, Tammuz, al-Rifaei, al-Thawra and Hamdoun. The detainees were taken to Nineveh Police Command for investigations,” the source told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA).

Iraqi troops carry out military reinforcements along borders with Syria

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi security troops have made military reinforcements along the borders with Syria, a source from the border guards in Anbar said on Sunday.

Speaking to Almaalomah website, the source said “Iraqi troops are carrying out military reinforcements as well as erecting unprecedented security barriers along the borders with Syria to prevent Islamic State militants infiltration and limit smuggling operations, while the Syrian army invade Islamic State locations near Qaim town, west of Anbar.”

The target behind the reinforcement, according to the source, “is prevent infiltration of whoever escapes battles in Syria toward the western regions.” The reinforcements “were started from Rutba reached to the Anbar and Mosul.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has said troops managed to secure the Syrian side of borders and eliminate Islamic State members in Upper Euphrates. He also made instructions to secure the Iraqi borders to limit the infiltration of the terrorists.

The Iraqi-Syrian borders are under the control of joint troops of military and border guards.

Eight Islamic State members killed in army airstrike, west of Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Eight Islamic State members were killed in airstrike launched by the Iraqi army, west of Anbar, a security source from the paramilitary forces in the province said on Sunday.

“The army jets shelled a location for Islamic State in al-Ogeirsha region in the desert of Hit town, west of Ramadi, leaving at least eight members killed,” the source told Almaalomah website.

The shelling, according to the source, “targeted Islamic State locations in Anbar’s desert to follow the remnant cells of IS.”

According to police, the suspects ‐ ages 26 to 41 ‐ disturbed the public order when they called for support and solidarity with the Gazoo-based terror group during Friday afternoon prayers.

During overnight raids, security forces seized flags and other materials connected to the incident on the Temple Mount, police said.

The suspects were questioned by police and scheduled to appear later in the day before a court.

Police said they would continue to ensure Moslems are able to pray respectably at the Jerusalem holy site during Ramadan, but will "respond to any incidents of disturbances or illegal protests."

On Friday, the army said an estimated 87,000 Paleostinians from the West Bank traveled to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers.

It also said 8,000 Paleostinians prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Ramadan, which is often a period of heightened tensions, this year comes during the ongoing weekly "March of Return" festivities on the Gazoo border.

Police shoot woman who arouses their suspicion in Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Officers say suspect, later found to have been unarmed, ignored repeated calls to stop and was shot in the legs, injured

Border Police officers shot a woman in the legs, moderately injuring her, in Jerusalem on Sunday night, after she ignored officers’ calls to stop, police said.

They had feared she was carrying an bomb, but she turned out to be unarmed, police said.

There were was no immediate information on the woman’s identity, and police said "all possibilities are being investigated at this stage."

The woman was spotted by a number of people behaving suspiciously on the tracks of the light rail in the Pisgat Zeev neighborhood in northeast Jerusalem late Sunday night, police said.

At least seven Border Police officers were called to the scene, according to a video filmed by a bystander, which was quickly shared on social media.

"The officers who considered the woman to be suspicious called for her to stop a number of times. After she failed to respond to their calls to halt, they conducted the protocols for stopping a suspicious person, including firing in the air," police said.

Police said the woman, who was dressed in a flowing black niqab covering her body and face, acted in a way that led the officers to believe "that she was carrying an bomb on her person."

The officers then fired at the legs of the woman, in accordance with regulations on dealing with suspicious persons.

A search of the woman revealed that she was unarmed, police said.

She was taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center in moderate condition, police said.

3 Palestinians killed in Israeli shelling on Gaza militant post
[DAWN] Israeli tank fire at an observation post killed three Paleostinians in the southern Gazoo Strip on Sunday, Paleostinian officials said.

The incident happened east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gazoo Strip, a front man for the health ministry in the Paleostinian enclave said.

The ministry identified those killed as Hussein al-Amour, 25, Abdul Haleem al-Naqa, 28, and Marwan al-Amour, 25.

Islamic Jihad is the second-most powerful gang in the Gazoo Strip after Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",, which runs the blockaded Paleostinian enclave.

Israel's military said in a statement that the tank fire came after soldiers detonated an bomb that had been placed near the border fence, targeting its troops. It said the device had been hidden inside a pair of fence cutters.

Separately on Saturday night, Israeli aircraft struck two targets belonging to Hamas, but there were no reports of casualties. The military said the operation was in response to a brief incursion across the border earlier in the day by Paleostinians who immediately fled back into Gazoo.

IDF: Explosives-laden drone from Gaza discovered in Israel
[IsraelTimes] The IDF announced Sunday that an explosives-laden drone flown over the border from the Gazoo Strip was discovered in Israeli territory last week.

The army said the drone was found in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council, in the northern Negev, "several days ago," and that it was flown over the border from Gazoo with the intention to injure Israeli soldiers patrolling the area.

The army said the drone was recovered whole, and an investigation into the incident had been opened.

The announcement came hours after after the IDF discovered an improvised bomb placed along the Gazoo security fence. The army said the IED targeting IDF troops was disguised to look like a set of bolt cutters.

position in the southern Gazoo Strip, killing three people. A spokesperson for the Iran-backed terrorist group confirmed the men were members of its military arm.

In February, four Israeli soldiers were maimed by an IED that was made to look like a flagstaff, which was fixed to the security fence. When the soldiers tried to take down the object, it exploded.

Four Russian servicemen killed in militant shelling in eastern Syria

forces of Evil launched an attack against an artillery battery of the Syrian army in the country’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr.

The ministry said in a statement on Sunday that two Russian military advisers, who directed the fire of the Syrian battery, were killed on the spot, while five more sustained injuries and were taken to a Russian military hospital to receive treatment.

Two servicemen succumbed to their grave injuries shortly afterwards.

The statement added that some 43 forces of Evil were killed in the ensuing festivities, which lasted for around an hour, without saying exactly when or where the fighting occurred.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights later claimed that nine Russian soldiers alongside at least 26 Syrian army troopers had been killed in the Wednesday attack.

In a statement, the observatory said "Islamic State fighters attacked on Wednesday a convoy for the Syrian government as well as Russian troops in southwest of al-Mayadin city, leaving 26 personnel of the Syrian troops and nine Russians killed."

The corpse count announced by the observatory came shortly after the Russian defense ministry announced on Sunday that four soldiers were killed due to an attack in Deiz Azzour city without identifying where or when the attack took place. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
Russian news agencies quoted a statement by the ministry saying that confrontations occurred after faceless myrmidons attacked the artillery of the Syrian government troops.

According to the ministry, two of the Russian victims were immediately killed after the attack. They were from the Russian advisors who run the Syrian artillery. Five others were maimed before being transferred to Russian military hospital. Two of them succumbed to death later.

Russia is one of the main allies of the Syrian government, providing it with political, diplomatic and military support.

The Russian Defence Ministry said that 43 rebels had been killed in the same fighting, Interfax reported.
