Jihadists Claim Egypt's Ismailiya Car Bombing
[An Nahar] An al-Qaeda-inspired group operating in the Sinai Peninsula claimed Monday a boom-mobileing outside a military building in Egypt's Suez Canal city of Ismailiya which maimed six soldiers.

The attack on Saturday destroyed part of the military compound's wall and set fire to several cars in the area. A second boom-mobile was also found in the area but it was defused.

"We, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, announce that we are responsible for the attack against the building of military intelligence in Ismailiya (carried out) with an aim to clean Egypt of dens of criminals and collaborators," the group said in a statement posted on jihadist forums.

"We advise our people in Egypt to stay away from any army and police building as they are legitimate targets of mujahideens."

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis had also claimed a boom-mobileing in September that targeted the convoy of Egypt's interior minister Mohammed Ibrahim. He was not hurt in the attack.

The group has previously claimed attacks against neighboring Israel.

Ismailiya and surrounding areas have seen regular attacks on police and military personnel, especially since the military toppled Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
on July 3.

More than 100 coppers have been killed across Egypt in attacks and festivities since then.

The military has been conducting an extensive operation in the restive Sinai Peninsula, east of the Suez canal to crack down on Islamist krazed killers.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Bus Bomb: Volgograd Blast Kills Six
[BBC] A suspected female jacket wallah has set off explosives on a bus in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, killing at least six people.

Officials believe the woman was from Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. There are several dozen ethnic groups, most of which speak either Caucasian, Turkic, or Iranian languages. Largest among these ethnic groups are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgin, and Laks. While Russers form less than five percent of the population, Russian remains the primary official language and the lingua franca...
in the North Caucasus and was the partner of an Islamist bad turban.

The blast, which happened just after 14:00 (10:00 GMT), also injured more than 30 people, some of them seriously.

An Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus region has led to many attacks there in recent years.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says the bombing has raised fears that bad turban groups may be planning to step up attacks in Russia in the run-up to the Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi next February.

Students
It is believed there were about 40 people on board the bus.

Our correspondent says that all buses in Volgograd have been ordered back to their depots to be searched for any sign of explosives.

One man whose daughter survived the kaboom told Moscow Echo radio: "It was a powerful kaboom - a huge blast. There were lots of students on the bus."

Another man, who was driving behind the bus, told Rossiya-24 television: "There was a blast - a bang - all the glass flew out of the windows. The cloud of smoke quickly dissipated and then I saw people start to fall out and run out to escape the bus. It was a horrible sight."

Earlier reports had suggested the blast might have been caused by an exploding gas canister.

Volgograd lies about 900km (560 miles) south of Moscow and 650km north of the North Caucasus.

Vladimir Markin, of the Investigative Committee - Russia's equivalent of the FBI - told the RIA Novosti news agency: "A criminal case has been opened under articles outlining terrorism, murder and the illegal use of firearms."

Mr Markin was later quoted by the Interfax agency as identifying the suspected suicide bomber as a woman from Dagestan.

He said: "According to preliminary information, the self-kaboom was carried out by a 30-year-old Dagestani native, Naida Akhiyalova.

"According to Sherlocks' information, the woman entered the bus at one of the bus stops and, almost right after that, the bomb went off. That is also confirmed by one of the passengers who survived."

'Black widows'
In recent years, Russia has seen a number of attacks by women suicide bombers known as black widows, who are often related to Islamist faceless myrmidons and carry out attacks to avenge their deaths.

Female suicide bombers struck at two underground railway stations in Moscow in 2010, killing more than 35 people.

They were also believed responsible for kabooms on two passenger jets at a Moscow airport in 2004 that killed about 90 people.

Separatists in Chechnya have fought two wars with Russian forces over the past two decades.

But the violence has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years, including to mainly-Mohammedan Ingushetia and Dagestan.

Hundreds of people, including members of the government and security services, have been killed.

President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
has stepped up security in the North Caucasus ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which open in Sochi on 7 February.

Analysis

The last significant attack on Russia's transport system was the devastating kaboom that killed 37 people at Moscow's Domodedovo airport almost three years ago.

The corpse count from today's attack was much lower. But with just four months to go to the Sochi Winter Olympics, its significance will not have gone unnoticed in the Russian government or the international Olympic movement.

If indeed the kaboom is linked to the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation and its troubled republics of Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia, it is a reminder of how easy it is for a single suicide bomber to cause multiple deaths in any part of Russia.

The speedy identification of a suspect will not reassure anyone that the situation is under control, and everyone will be hoping this was a one-off and not the start of a bombing campaign.
Ynet adds:
An explosion that killed at least five people on a bus in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Monday was caused by a bomb, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement.

Bomb on train kills six in Balochistan
[Pak Daily Times] A bomb hit a passenger train in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding more than 17 others, officials said.

The device, apparently planted on the railway track, went kaboom! when the train approached a station in Naseerabad District, around 250 kilometres southeast of Quetta. "It was a kaboom, the target was the passenger train. At least six people have been killed," provincial Home Secretary Asad Gilani told AFP, adding that more than 17 others were maimed in the blast. Zafar Shah Bukhari, a bigwig in the area, confirmed the attack on the Jaffar Express, travelling from Rawalpindi to Quetta, and the corpse count. "We have taken the dead bodies and injured to the nearby hospital," Bukhari said, adding that the condition of six of the injured was critical. The kaboom derailed the train, Bukhari added. The identity of those killed in the attack was not yet clear but Gilani said some security personnel were travelling in the train. "All those killed were men but women and kiddies were among the maimed," Bukhari said. Police and other security personnel cordoned off the area after the blast.

An intelligence official said bomb disposal experts were examining the site to determine the nature of the blast and check for any more devices. Bukhari said one of the compartments of the passenger train was badly damaged due to the intensity of the kaboom. Faiz Bugti, a senior railway official in the area, told AFP that the train service had been suspended as the blast has damaged the railway track. Javed Ahmad, another railway official, told AFP that work to clear the track would take hours.

The dead included three brothers and a woman. Rescue teams rushed to the site shortly after the incident and shifted the dead and injured to the Sibi and Dera Murad Jamali district headquarter hospitals where a state of emergency had already been declared. "It was a remotely controlled device that targeted the Jaffar Express," said Balochistan Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti. He announced one million rupees for each person who died in the blast.

At Least Two Wounded as Clashes Renew in Bab al-Tabbaneh, Jabal Mohsen
[An Nahar] At least two people were maimed Monday evening as festivities renewed between the rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
.

"Sniper gunfire erupted between the Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh areas and a hand grenade was hurled on Syria Street," which separates the two districts, state-run National News Agency reported.

It later said "festivities have intensified and a shell has landed on Syria Street near al-Qaddour cafe."

"More than five people were maimed in Bab al-Tabbaneh and some families who are trapped in their houses are urging security forces to help them," MTV reported.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said at least two people were reportedly maimed, identifying one of them as Bilal Hasan Khdeir.

It noted that a fierce exchange of gunfire was taking place on the frontiers of al-Riva, al-Baqqar and al-Omari and that the army was shooting back at the sources of gunfire in a bid to silence them.

Residents were fleeing the al-Baqqar area and Syria Street to safer locations amid the intensification of sniper fire, VDL said.

Voice of Leb radio (100.5) said "heavy weapons, machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs)" were being used in the festivities.

"A shell landed in al-Omari Street and one person was hit by sniper fire at the Abu Ali roundabout," al-Jadeed television reported.

Earlier on Monday, NNA said the army reinforced its deployment in the restive areas after an exchange of gunfire broke out on Sunday evening.

"The army has since strengthened its deployment and went on alert in the northern city," the agency said.

On October 11, an army soldier was maimed as an exchange of gunfire erupted in Bab al-Tabbaneh, Jabal Mohsen and Syria Street following the arrest of a 19-year-old Jabal Mohsen resident by the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau.

Youssef Diab was tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on charges of involvement in the deadly bombings that hit two mosques in the city.

"The unrest erupted after an Intelligence Bureau unit tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
a young man from Jabal Mohsen called Youssef Diab, which prompted residents to protest and fire shots in the air, the thing that provoked Bab al-Tabbaneh's residents and led to festivities," LBCI said at the time.

Rockets Fired from Syria Hit Bekaa's Hermel, al-Qaa
[An Nahar] Four rockets struck the Bekaa city of Hermel on Monday after they were fired from Syrian territory, Agence La Belle France Presse quoted a security source as saying.

"Four rockets launched from inside Syrian territory hit separate areas of the town of Hermel," which lies some 10 kilometers from the border with Syria, the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"There have been no reports of casualties," he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, Jack stuck the cigar in his mouth, stepped onto the gantry, and asked Got a light, Mac?
Von Schtinken stopped short, lowering the dagger and trying to control his features.
If you light that thing, Herr Armschtröng, he pointed out, his voice tense, we all die!...

state-run National News Agency said four rockets hit residential neighborhoods in Hermel after being fired from "the slopes of Leb's Eastern Mountain Belt, east of the town of al-Qaa" on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Later on Monday, the Lebanese army issued a statement saying "starting 4:30 p.m., four rockets fired from the Syrian side of the border started falling on the outskirts of the city of Hermel."

"Four other rockets also fired from Syria landed in the outskirts of the town of al-Qaa, one of them near an army post, causing material damage but no casualties," it added.

"Army forces inspected the areas where the rockets struck to accurately identify their source and type and they also took the appropriate military measures," the statement said.

Quoting sources, Voice of Leb radio station (100.5) said earlier that "the targeted area in Hermel contains heavy artillery positions used by Hizbullah during the Qusayr battles."

"Should festivities erupt in (the Syrian area of) Qalamoun, this region (in Hermel) might be used for the same purpose," the sources added.

Syria warplanes strike near Damascus to halt rebel push
[Al Ahram] Government warplanes launched strikes on areas southeast of Damascus on Monday after rebels seized key regime positions there, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Warplanes carried out four air strikes this morning (Monday) on the edges of the town of Mleha," near army positions the rebels captured at the weekend, the Britannia-based monitor said.

The rebels had pushed forward in the area after a jacket wallah from the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front detonated an explosive-packed car at a checkpoint between Mleha and the neighbourhood of Jaramana on Saturday.

Opposition fighters went on to take the checkpoint the building of a pharmaceutical company used by government troops as a base.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the southeastern Jaramana suburb of Damascus is a key pro-regime area which would be exposed by any rebel advances in nearby towns and neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
regime troops pressed their onslaught on the besieged town of Moadamiyet al-Sham southwest of the capital, with fierce festivities between government and rebel troops on the outskirts of the town, the Observatory said.

Thirty-one months into Syria's conflict, the army is pushing hard to secure the capital by trying to crush rebel-held pockets on the outskirts of Damascus.

Activists in opposition-controlled areas say the tight sieges imposed by the Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
