#1  No virgins for these 25 Taliban. As they say, "revenge is best served cold." Maybe a better paraphrasing in this case would be "revenge is best served with hot lead."

Europe
Mars needs women Germany needs immigrants
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Saturday that immigration is good for the country and politicians must explain better that everyone stands to gain from it, in response to the rise of a new movement opposing an influx of Muslim immigrants.
Germany, nor France nor Hungary nor any other country in Europe needs to be colonized by an inimical foreign culture. If they can't drink beer and eat Schweinehachsen and do the Chicken Dance, how "German" can they get? Maybe Alle Menschen würden Brüder but they don't all live in the same house.
The number of asylum seekers in Germany, many from Syria, has more than doubled this year to around 200,000, and net immigration is at its highest level in two decades. Many Germans are concerned about the related costs and worry about refugees taking jobs.

The sudden emergence of grass-roots movement PEGIDA, or Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West, which last week held a 17,500-strong anti-immigrant rally in the eastern city of Dresden, has forced lawmakers to respond.

The world is more open and immigration helps everyone. Just as we used millions of refugees and expellees after World War Two to rebuild .. so we need immigration today, Schaeuble told Bild Online when asked about the popularity of PEGIDA.

US military drops weapons in areas held by ISIS in Iraq
Whoops! Sorry, guys.
Baghdad: Volunteer forces in Iraq fighting against the ISIS terrorists said US military aircraft dropped weapons in areas held by the terrorist group, Press TV reported on Saturday. According to the fighters, American helicopters dropped boxes of weapons in Yathrib and Balad districts in Iraq's Salahuddin Province on Friday.

The report comes as the Iraqi army and volunteer fighters appear to be gaining the upper hand and making significant gains against ISIS.

The US Central Command said the airdrops -- including weapons, ammunition and medical supplies -- were "intended to enable continued resistance against ISIS' attempts to take Kobani."

The US and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. They said they were carrying out the airstrikes against the ISIS in both countries in order to curb their advance in the region. However, the air raids have so far failed to check the insurgents' military gains.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinians held after firebomb injured Israeli girl
Two Palestinians suspected of throwing a firebomb that wounded an 11-year-old Israeli girl and her father have been arrested in the West Bank, the Shin Bet security service said on Saturday. The two, including a 16-year-old, were detained overnight Thursday-Friday, hours after the incident at Azzoun village in the north of the occupied territory, a Shin Bet statement said.

It said the two Palestinians hid in ambush above the road separating the Maale Shomron settlement from Azzoun before throwing the petrol bomb at a car carrying the Israelis. The vehicle caught fire and the girl was gravely injured. She was still being treated in hospital late on Saturday, Israeli media reported.

Her father suffered light injuries in the attack.

Firebomb attacks by Palestinians in the West Bank against Israeli civilians and military targets are not rare. According to the military, in the first nine days of December Palestinians carried out 24 Molotov cocktail attacks, five of them targeting civilian Israeli cars.

#8  3rd world countries are marginal at training and maintenance. With that it used to be they could only afford smaller planes. Thus after an accident the loss would be smaller. Now they have the ability to get older large aircraft and Airbus is making deals to these nations for the 300 series. They still don't train or maintain properly. Lufthansa has contracted with a number of Asian countries to get their aircraft up to par, aiding a number of carriers. EASA and the FAA turn a blind eye to them, unless the aircraft is flying to our or their countries, then they have to meet our standards. For example the runway at Manila has been condemned a number of times for a very bad dip 1/4 way down that will blow tires and ruin gear. Most US pilots land long to avoid it. If EASA or the FAA try to hold them to a standard it becomes very political very fast. While I used to fly a lot, I am very careful about what airline I fly outside US carriers.

#10  USN, ret---you may be on to something. I read somewhere that the pilot was cleared to 38,000 ft. FL 380. Indonesian t'storms go up to 60,000 ft. I wonder if the plane was getting to "coffin corner" where to you go too fast and you get Mach buffet. Go too slow and you go into a stall. Not a good place to be if you are an Airbus control system.

The food is good, and while the Indonesian pilots don't fill me with confidence, neither do the unionized Australian maintenance workers.

#14  The two previous Malaysian events were suicide by pilot and being shot down by the Russians. Hard to see how this could be due to poor maintenance.
Posted by: jpal || 12/28/2014 17:59 Comments || Top||

#15  AP; Your scenario is scary; the pilot may have been trying to overfly the weather and ran out of lift, entered a stall/spin and was unable to recover.
Never have liked the Airbus complete trust in the computer; airlines demand the folks that they put in the left seat have oodles of hours and to relinquish all that experience to HAL is something I do not like. I try not to fly AB on long haul flights just for that reason.
Having said that, I think the AB product is excellent, except for that one little thing....
Posted by: USN, Ret. || 12/28/2014 19:22 Comments || Top||

#16  jpal, I also doubt this was due to maintenance. I was pointing out that these airlines have both a training and maintenance issue. This one sounds more like what AP has said. The pilot flew into a massive up or down draft while flying manually. Again failed in training if this was the issue. A320's have great weather radar, ya have to fly around the red zones.

#17  Fox kept running a chart this morning showing the plane diverting northeast of the route, whereas the crew apparently requested a southwest clearance. NE was right into the weather, what's that all about?
Posted by: KBK || 12/28/2014 19:55 Comments || Top||

#18  I bet if you go to ufo.com you will get some very entertaining reading as the tin hat crowd grinds out some real doozies for theories on what happened.

Me thinks it is the old Airbus fly by wire system getting into a familial spat with the pilot and the passengers lost. Airbus doesn't want to admit how many of those technical monstrosities have flown themselves into the ground, gone into computer initiated spins or have just gone straight down into the ground for no reason..

#19  I've got to go across the Pond this summer. I go with Iceland Air. They fly Boeing jets, have excellent pilots, cabin crew and maintenance. We go ANC direct to Keflavik, then for us this trip the choice is: Glasgow, Manchester, heathrow or Paris. We will take Paris and take some pics of muzzies taking over the sidewalk before the city falls. Then on to edenburgh. Will miss Detroit though.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Tehran heats up arms race with ‘suicide’ drone
Iran's army said Saturday it has deployed a suicide drone for the first time in massive ongoing military drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Arabian Gulf.

Gen. Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the army's chief commander of ground forces, described the unmanned aircraft as a "mobile bomb," according to state media, which said the aerial device is designed to strike air, ground and naval targets.

He did not provide the name of the drone. The conservative Kayhan daily referred to it as the Yasir, while an online news website called it the Raad. Officials could not be reached for comment.
Ynet analyzes the thing here, including a photo.

ISIS loses ground to Kurds in Syria’s Kobane
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] IS Death Eater group has lost ground in the Syrian border town of Kobane, where Kurdish fighters now control more than 60 percent of territory, a monitoring group said Saturday.

The strategically located town on the border with Turkey has become a major symbol of resistance against ISIS, which has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq, committing widespread atrocities.

The jihadists launched a major offensive in mid-September to try to capture Kobane, and at one point controlled more than half of the town, known in Arabic as Ain al-Arab.
