Since it was Mr. Johnson, who with his Machiavellian .gif of the CYA document, which was picked up by many, and was one of the things that led to Danny Delerious' exposure, he has a right to be pissed.

I get the NYTs pre-published sections of Sunday edition on Saturday and read the magazine cover story about LLL bloggers. The MSM is so blind to anything other than their own highly developed partisanship it is glaucomic. The closest thing to balancing the story was a single sentance aside to "Kaus and Sullivan", both of whom are more centrist than right. But the biggest most grievous but also telling sign of MSM vs. bloggers was that the story could not be edited, revised and timelined better to report the most seminal event in blogging (ie.Rathergate). It only points out that MSM is dedicatedly LLL and slow to catch on. Thank God for that.

Yassin Abdullah Al-Qadi, a highly-respected Saudi businessman and benefactor, has won a legal battle against the office of the Swiss federal prosecutor at the Swiss Federal Criminal Court, a press statement issued by his lawyers said yesterday. Al-Qadi filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor after he uncovered the appointment of Jean-Charles Brisard by Deputy Swiss Attorney General Claude Nicati as an expert in his investigation into allegations that Al-Qadi had financed terrorism.

A French national was shot and killed in the Saudi Arabian city of Jiddah early Sunday, the Interior Ministry said. The man was shot at 1 a.m. in the Red Sea port city. The ministry did not name the victim or provide details. The attack was the latest in a rash of violence directed toward foreigners. Some attacks have been carried out by militants bent on driving foreigners out of the country to hurt the economy, but the motive behind Sunday's shooting wasn't immediately known.
Ah, but I thought ze French understand the Arab ways so much better than the rest of us...

It's quite possible the guy was shot without the attackers knowing his nationality. Could've been a Brit, Yank, Aussie, Belgian. The murder of an innocent person's nothing to celebrate.

British hostage Ken Bigley is still alive, according to a London-based Islamist activist. Yasser al-Serri, director of the Islamic Observation Centre, said the Iraqi militants behind the kidnapping had replied to his appeal for information. There has been no independent confirmation however and the Foreign Office is treating the news with extreme caution.
Two negotiators from the Muslim Council of Britain are making efforts in Iraq to secure the release of hostage Kenneth Bigley. Dr Daud Abdullah and Dr Musharraf Hussain met religious leaders and other influential Iraqis in Baghdad. "We want to get a message to the abductors. Whoever is holding Mr Bigley we are endeavouring to get a message to those captors. The message is simple. It is a humanitarian one," said Dr Abdullah. Dr Musharraf Hussain added: "I think as fellow British citizens it is our responsibility to do what we can. I believe in the power of prayer." Meanwhile, Tony Blair says the government will do everything it can to secure Mr Bigley's release but warned against the raising of false hopes.
Mr Blair and his wife Cherie joined churchgoers praying for the safe return of Mr Bigley. They were at St Peter's Church in Brighton for the traditional service before Labour's annual conference gets under way. In a TV interview, Mr Blair was asked about his feelings on viewing Mr Bigley's plea for help from the Prime Minister. "My first reaction is the reaction of anyone, which is real sympathy for him, anger at how he is being held by those people and an earnest hope that, despite all the difficulties, we can do something. "But I just don't know if we are able to or not".

A whole city is *probably* a bit much - at the moment. But, in all honesty, once they detonate a bomb in a Western (or Russian) city, how long will it take before those boats do what they're designed to do?
Can *anyone* get through to these shitforbrains that the reason the West hasn't gone medieval is because of the very thin veneer of civilisation we have managed to painstakingly put over a demon that really should not be released?
Every event such as the beheadings, Beslan, airplanes being blown up in mid-air and of course, 9/11 just wears a little more of this veneer away.
There is a horrible air of inevitability in all this...

British military jets were scrambled to escort an Olympic Airlines aircraft en route from Athens to New York to Stansted airport near London after a bomb alert, defence ministry and airline officials said. All 301 passengers were safely evacuated. "A number of RAF planes were sent to the civil aircraft in the last hour and a half to escort it to Stansted Airport at the request of civilian authorities," a defence ministry spokesman said.
Olympic Airlines in Athens said the Airbus plane had been diverted and assistance requested after an anonymous caller warned there was a bomb on board. According to a spokeswoman at Stansted airport, flight 411 from Athens to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport was diverted into Stansted "on a full emergency". "This afternoon it landed safely just after 3.30 pm (1430 GMT). There were 301 passengers on board, all of whom have been evacuated safely." The British Department for Transport said the aircraft was being searched as part of "a standard response".

POLICE arrested four men in London under Britain's anti-terrorist law, as a newspaper claimed it had infiltrated a gang trying to buy radioactive material for a "dirty bomb". The Metropolitan Police said the four men - arrested under the Terrorism Act 2001 - had been taken into custody at a central London police station for further questioning. "Several addresses have been searched," a police spokesman said. "Some searches continue."
All four men - whose names were not released - were detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, which refers to "the (suspected) commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism". The News of the World said it had co-operated with police after it infiltrated a gang that claimed to be looking for radioactive material on behalf of a Saudi described as sympathetic to "the Muslim cause". The Saudi, whose name was not disclosed, was reportedly willing to pay £300,000 (756,000) in cash for a kilogram of "highly powerful radioactive material" from Russia known as Red Mercury. I think we can guess who the ultimate buyer of this stuff was supposed to be ...
The News of the World said the material was developed by Soviet scientists during the Cold War "for making briefcase nuclear bombs" that could kill everyone within a few city blocks. "It is very, very radioactive," a member of the gang was quoted as telling Mazher Mahmood, the News of the World's star investigative reporter, who posed as a Muslim extremist. "The guy (from Saudi Arabia) said it is used for making bombs. It'll either be for use here in the United Kingdom or in the United States," the gang member reportedly said. The gang allegedly consisted of a banker originally from Goa, India, his "sidekick" from Mozambique, and a Somalian formerly resident in Saudi Arabia, while the Saudi was said to have successfully applied for a visa to enter Britain. Police said three suspects were arrested at a hotel in the Brent Cross district of north London, while a fourth man was taken into custody at his north London home. The News of the World described elite anti-terrorist officers raiding a Holiday Inn at Brent Cross.

Red Mercury? Hahaha, there's no such thing. These terrorists are barking up the wrong tree (thankfully). Red Mercury is an urban legend. I wish I had more citations, but evidently some goobers made a children's computer game with the title "Red Mercury" and clogged up all the google results with it.
That article doesn't specifiy if it's radioactive, but it doesn't look that way. What's scary is the intent. We don't know if the money was real (they could just kill the dealer for it), but since they got four guys in custody, we know Padilla wasn't just an isolated incident. If their intent to buy was legitimate, the threat level is now higher.
Times are desparate for terrorists. With W willing to attack them around the world, they may decide to preempt the laser-guided missle that has their name on it and sneak one in here first.
Let's hope the real stuff stays in the right hands. Iran must be stopped.

I had a quick shifty at the News of the World in the local Newsagent and they were ranting about a Saudi connection to this. I fthese are British citizens with dual nationality then either lock 'em up or kick 'em out - I don't think this will stand up in court as the story's all over th papers and is's a classic News of the World sting.

Howard, I'm not so sure about this. I don't know about the reporter, but the Muslim council is hardly showing the sense of urgency required by the situation. Ten days after the kidnapping and these guys drift over there spouting platitudes about how they are going to try to appeal to the clerics and the kidnappers' sense of compassion. [Er... what was that again?? Possibly I didn't hear that correctly.]
I don't really buy it. How can you tell that I've had it with these Muslims??

Veery slowly... but it is the first time they've got off their arses and acted responsibly rather than bitching from the sidelines and blaming Blair. Rather cynically I believe they're terrified of the possibility of a backlash against the Muslim community in the UK that Bigley's murder may prompt. Hell, it's a start.

Three rebels were killed in a federal operation in the Ingush village of Surkhakhi, a Russian military spokesman told Interfax on Sunday morning. A reconnaissance group spotted a rebel group of about 20 members three kilometers from Surkhakhi, and opened fire, inflicting losses on the rebels, said Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the anti-terrorist headquarters in the North Caucasus. "The bodies of three rebels, as well as military equipment and ammunition, were discovered at the scene on Sunday morning. "Intelligence suggests that the rebels' losses are far greater," Shabalkin said.
He also said that the deputy emir of the village of Stariye Atagi Islam Sugaipov, who was a member of a rebel group led by Isa Sadayev, the emir of Stariye Atagi, was killed in a sweep operation on the outskirts of the village. Shabalkin said that on the eastern limit of Stariye Atagi federal servicemen spotted a rebel group preparing to cross the Argun River. Fire was opened at the rebels, but they managed to escape. An operation to track them down is underway. Automatic rifles and a grenade launcher were discovered at the scene. Another clash occurred near the village of Sary-Su in Chechnya's Shelkovskoi district, Shabalkin said. One rebel was killed when a rebel group was attacked from ambush. Measures are being take to detain the others, said Shabalkin. Federal servicemen did not suffer losses, the military spokesman said.

Heavily armed rebels raided a village in Chechnya, wounding two people and burning houses, Russian media reported yesterday. Two rebels were reportedly killed in the raid. About 50 rebels entered the village of Alleroi and broke into several houses, Russian news agencies reported, quoting the regional police force. An 8-year-old girl was badly wounded in the attack on Alleroi, about 50 km east of the capital Grozny. The assailants also fired on a passing car, wounding one of its passengers, police said in a statement. Two rebels were killed during the raid. Indonesian troops shot dead 11 separatist rebels in the restive province of Aceh in a single day, a military spokesman said Sunday. Six rebels of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) were killed in three separate clashes in North Aceh district on Saturday. Indonesian police have arrested two more men suspected of involvement in the Australian embassy bomb attack. Members of the anti-terror squad arrested the men, identified as Iznul and Ibnu, in the coastal town of Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java on Friday evening, Media Indonesia newspaper said Sunday, quoting a police source. Police are also looking for a third suspect who had undergone bombmaking training with Iznul and Ibnu, the source said. Police spokesmen could not immediately be reached for confirmation.
The arrests, if confirmed, would bring the number of people detained for questioning over the September 9 embassy blast to 16. Five of the 16 have since been officially declared as suspects. They have distributed more than 200,000 leaflets bearing the pictures of nine men including the Malaysians wanted for terrorism including the embassy blast.

Palestinian officials at the Waqf, or Islamic Trust, which oversees the site, said there is no danger and accused Israel of trying to prevent Muslims from praying at the shrine. "It is a policy to make people afraid before Ramadan," said Adnan Husseini, the director of the Waqf in Jerusalem. On Sunday, a dozen workmen from the Waqf were shoring up walls outside Solomon's Stables, an area under the eastern part of the compound, which was built during the reign of King Herod at the time of Christ. My recollection in that the Western Wall or Wailing Wall is below the Temple Mount. In the 1990s the Palestinians were throwing rocks down on the Jewish people at the Wall as they worshipped. I suspect it is a good move on the part of the Israeli's to maintain security and not have some jackass blow his or herself up amongst the Jewish worshippers.

Paramilitary police killed a suspected top al-Qaida operative Sunday in a four-hour gunbattle at a house in southern Pakistan that also led to the arrest of two other men, the information minister said. Amjad Hussain Farooqi had been wanted for his alleged role in the kidnapping and beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 and two assassination attempts against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in December 2003. "I as chief spokesman for the government of Pakistan confirm that our forces have killed Amjad Hussain Farooqi," Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told The Associated Press by phone from Amsterdam, where he has gone on an official trip with Musharraf.

The Pakistani police and agencies are very creatively imaginative, I am sure they will put that contraption to shame. A typical boast is that we can make deaf mutes talk in any language we want to. I hope only the "best" officers are asigned to ease their talking difficulties.

Police detained a suspected Islamic militant on suspicion of links with an outlawed extremist group in a raid, a security official said on Saturday. The suspect was captured on Friday in a residential area of Hyderabad, said the official. He gave no further details and only said the man has been shifted to a detention facility for interrogation. AD Khawaja, a senior police officer, said the man is accused of recently arranging a public meeting of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a pickup carrying three Chinese engineers working on the Gomal Zam dam in Ladah sub-division of South Waziristan Agency. One Chinese engineer was slightly injured. The attackers ran away fled after khasadars opened up on them returned fire. Terrorists also fired six rockets at the Wana scouts camp from the north of Wana. The rockets landed in Doog village and in the Korai area, injuring one person. On Friday night, four rockets were fired at Zari Noor Army colony but of course they missed the target. No one was injured. Rockets attacks on security forces have increased over the last few days but have yet to hit anything.

At least 15 people were killed and 33 wounded in two separate air strikes Saturday by US planes on a suspected hideout and meeting place in Fallujah of operatives of the alleged Al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The Tawhid wal Jihad (Unity and holy war) militant group of Jordanian-born Zarqawi has claimed responsibility for some of the deadliest bombings in Iraq and a slew of kidnappings of foreigners including British engineer Kenneth Bigley, and two of his US colleagues who have been beheaded. Sumaidiy castigated the interim government of Prime Minister Iyad Allawi for refusing to release one former woman weapons scientist in Saddam Hussein's regime held by the US military as demanded by Bigley's captors. "This is the height of immorality on the part of this government which gives no thought to the honour of these Iraqi women," he said speaking at the bin Taimiya mosque in Baghdad, which was searched for weapons Saturday by Iraqi and US forces who found nothing. "We reject this government and everything it stands for."

Last week Iraq's justice ministry said Rihab Taha -- a biologist known as Dr Germ suspected of involvement in an illegal weapons program under Saddam -- was eligible for release. The US military says Taha and Huda Amash, another female scientist who worked on the weapons programmes and is known as Dr Anthrax, are the only two women thay are holding at a detention facility near Baghdad airport.

An Israeli helicopter fired missiles Sunday at a suspected weapons workshop in the area of a recent mortar attack that killed an Israeli-American woman. Two Palestinians were slightly injured, witnesses and medical officials said.

The army said the target was a metal workshop used by Hamas militants to make mortar bombs like the one that struck the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim on Friday. The helicopter fired two missiles at the building in Khan Younis, a refugee camp bordering the settlement. Paramilitary troops fought a four-hour gunbattle Sunday with suspected terrorists holed up in a house in southern Pakistan, and arrested two men and killed another, officials said. An intelligence official said authorities had information that al-Qaida suspects had been hiding inside the house in Nawabshah, a town about 125 miles northeast of the main southern city of Karachi, but their identities and nationalities were not immediately clear. Two men who had tried to flee were arrested. They were led away in blindfolds with ladies' underwear on their heads by intelligence officials, said local police official Ismail Jamali. One of the men was injured in the gunbattle, he said.

Suicide attackers exploded a pair of car bombs outside an Iraqi National Guard compound west of the capital Sunday, wounding American and Iraqi forces, and the U.S. military announced the arrest of a senior Iraqi commander for alleged ties to the insurgency. The two militants, who died in the blasts, tried to ram two cars loaded with explosives into the base in Kharma, a town on the outskirts of the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, a U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity. The Iraqi Resistance Islamic Front, JAMI
ORIGIN: The newest Sunni resistance group announced its existence on 30 May 2004.
ORGANIZATION: Includes a coalition of small resistance factions. JAMI's military wing, the Salah-al-Din and Sayf-Allahal-Maslul Brigades, has carried out dozens of operations against the U.S. forces.
REGION OF ACTIVITY: Governorates of Ninawa and Diyala.
ACTIVITIES: In Ninawa Governorate: the shelling of the occupation command headquarters and the semi-daily shelling of the Mosul airport. Jami targets members of the U.S. intelligence in the Al-Faysaliyah area in Mosul and in the governorate of Diyala. In Diyala, the front's Al-Rantisi Brigade sniped a U.S. soldier and used mortars to shell Al-Faris Airport.
Other small factions
Hamzah Faction: Emerged on 10 October 2003 in Al-Fallujah. Called for release of Shaykh Jamal Nidal, who had been arrested by U.S. forces.
Iraqi Liberation Army: First appeared on 15 July, 2003. It warned foreign countries against sending troops to Iraq and pledged to attack any troops that were sent.
Awakening and Holy War: Arab Sunni mujahidin. Active in Al-Fallujah. Filmed an operation and sent tape to Iranian television on 7 July 2003. Claimed on tape that Saddam and U.S. were two sides of same coin. Claims to have carried out operations against U.S. forces in Al-Fallujah and other cities.
The White Flags: A group of Arab Sunni mujahidin, active in Sunni triangle and probably in other areas. Originally opposed to Saddam Hussein and in alliance with the Muslim Youths and Muhammad's Army. The group criticized the bombing of the Jordanian Embassy in Baghdad. No information is available about their operations.
Al-Haqq Army: Consists of Arab Sunni Muslims having some nationalistic tendencies but not loyal to Saddam.
Ba'athist factions
CHARACTER: Loyal to previous regime of Saddam Hussein. Do not represent a significant proportion of resistance.
ACTIVITIES: Mostly restricted to financing resistance operations.
COMPOSITION: The factions still existing secretly in the Iraqi arena include:
Al-Awdah (The Return): Concentrated in northern Iraq: Samarra, Tikrit, Al-Dur and Mosul. It consists of members of the former intelligence apparatus.
Saddam's Fedayeen: Formed by Saddam Hussein's regime before the invasion. Many of its members are rumored to have abandoned their loyalty to Saddam and to have joined Islamic and national groups on the side of the 11 September Revolutionary Group and the Serpent's Head Movement.
Shia resistance against occupation
Al-Sadr group: The Al-Mahdi Army
ORIGIN: The Al-Mahdi Army is considered the only militia experiment to emerge after the occupation. Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr announced the formation of the Al-Mahdi Army in July 2003, but not as a force directed against the occupation.
COMPOSITION: Within a short period, Al-Sadr gathered between 10,000 and 15,000 well-trained youths, the majority of whom were from the poor of the Al-Sadr City, Al-Shulah, and the southern cities.
ACTIVITIES: after the closure of Al-Sadr's Al-Hawzah newspaper in March 2004,Al-Sadr's assistant Mustafa al-Yaqubi is arrested, under suspicion of being involved in the killing of Imam Abd-al-Majid al-Khoei. A writ to arrest Muqtada al-Sadr is issued in April on charges of assassinating Al-Khoei inside the Al-Haydari mosque in Al-Najaf on 10 April 2003. The arrest warrant placed the Al-Mahdi Army in confrontation with the occupation forces in Baghdad and the southern governorates. The greatest confrontation between this militia and the occupation forces erupted in Al-Najaf in August 2004. The battle lasted for nearly three weeks, and ended with the signing of a cease-fire agreement.
Imam Ali Bin-Abi-Talib Jihadi Brigades
ORIGIN: This Shia group appeared for the first time on 12 October 2003.
TARGETS: The group announced its intention to kill the soldiers of any country sending its troops to support the coalition forces. The group also threatened to transfer the battleground to the territories of coalition countries. The group also threatened to assassinate all the members of the Interim
Governing Council and any Iraqi cooperating with the coalition forces.
REGION OF PROJECTED ACTIVITIES: The group announced that Al-Najaf and Karbala were the battlegrounds in which it would target the US forces.
Factions which adopt terrorist methods of abductions and killing -- Armed groups that resort to operations of abducting and killing noncombatant foreigners, as a method to terrorize the enemy and apply pressure to achieve specific political ends. This method of terror was successful in pressuring Philippine President Gloria Macapagol-Arroyo to withdraw the Philippine forces from the U.S.-led coalition, after the abduction of her compatriot Angelo del Cruz on 7 July 2004.
The most prominent of these groups are:
Assadullah Brigades
STATEMENT: The brigades said in a statement number 50: "The mujahid is entitled to capture any infidel that enters Iraq, whether he works for a construction company or in any other job, because he could be warrior, and the mujahid has the right to kill him or take him as a prisoner."
REGION OF ACTIVITIES: This group is concentrated in Baghdad and its suburbs.
NOTABLE ACTIVITIES: This group detained the third most senior diplomat at the Egyptian Embassy to Iraq, Muhammad Mamduh Hilmi Qutb, in July 2004, after the Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmad Nazif announced that Egypt was prepared to offer its security expertise to the interim Iraqi government. The diplomat was released after a week.
Islamic Retaliation Movement:This group abducted the US Marine of Lebanese origin, Wasif Ali Hassun, on 19 July 2004, and then released him.
Islamic Anger Brigades: This group abducted 15 Lebanese in June 2004 and then released all, except for one: Husayn Ulayyan, an employee of a communications company, who was killed.
Khalid-Bin-al-Walid Brigades and Iraqââ¬s Martyrs Brigades: This group is believed to have abducted and killed Italian journalist Enzo Bladoni in August 2004.
The Black Flags Group: A battalion of the Secret Islamic Army. This group abducted three Indians, two Kenyans and an Egyptian working for a Kuwaiti company operating in Iraq. The stated aim was to coerce the company to cease its activities in Iraq. The hostages were later released.
The last four groups are clearly intellectually close to the beliefs and thinking of Al-Qaââ¬idah Organization and its leader, Usamah Bin-Ladin.
The Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi Group: "The first case of slaughter was that of US national Nicholas Berg in May 2004, and the Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi group claimed responsibility for it."
The Al-Tawhid wa al-Jihad Group: the Al-Tawhid wa al-Jihad Group killed South Korean Kim Il, "who was working for a Korean company providing the US Army with military installations."
The Islamic Army in Iraq: "A secret organization that adopts the ideology of Al-Qaeda. The organization abducted Iranian Consul Feredion Jahani and the two French journalists, Georges Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot."
Ansar al-Sunnah Movement: In August 2004, the Ansar al-Sunna Movement abducted 12 Nepalese and killed them on 23 August 2004.
The operations of abducting hostages has cascaded in Iraq: some have been slaughtered, and others have been released.
"The total number of hostages killed so far is: two Italians, two [now three] US nationals, two Pakistanis, one Egyptian, one Turk, one Lebanese, one Bulgarian, one South Korean, and 12 Nepalese."

I started to look through this, and I'm wondering if there's a bit of overanalysis going on: as near as I can tell from previous discussion here, groups (F), (G), and (I) are all different names for the same group: the remnant of Ansar-Al-Islam that Zarqawi is working with.
Also, this post only seems to discuss the killings of foreign hostages. More locals are dying from this; I suspect the main reasons these groups sometimes change to taking foreigners hostage is money, hence their actions in taking French hostages despite that country being at odds with the US already. Kind of like what Willie Sutton said about bank robbery: he did it because that's where the money was.
Kidnapping Iraqis gives them power, but kidnapping foreigners gives them an income stream.

We need to never ever forget 911! The Japanese beheaded our guys in WW2. They paid dearly in the island campaigns for what the did. The Japanese understood that we were capable of inflicting pain beyond their beliefs--that is the key phrase "beyond their beliefs."

U.S. aircraft have struck at the rebel Iraqi stronghold of Falluja for a third time in 24 hours, targeting a meeting of suspected militants loyal to Jordanian mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Saturday night's strike was aimed at about 10 militants meeting in the city centre to plan operations, the U.S. military said. Eight people were killed and 17 wounded, Anas Ahmed, a doctor at a nearby hospital, said. It was the third U.S.-described "precision strike" in 24 hours, raising to 15 the number of people killed and the number of wounded to 30, among them women and children, doctors said.
Zarqawi's group, known as Tawhid and Jihad (Monotheism and Holy War), has claimed responsibility for kidnapping and beheading foreigners and for car bombings and other attacks in Iraq over the past year. After the latest attack, doctors would not let a Reuters cameraman film the wounded as reporters have been allowed to do in the aftermath of previous strikes on Falluja. Residents would also not allow reporters near the site of the attack. "Multiple secondary explosions following the strike indicate the site was used by terrorists to store explosives and weapons," a military statement said.
In the past, Falluja residents have said the U.S. military's precision bombing of suspected militants ended up killing innocent women and children. A child was pulled from the rubble of one building after Saturday morning's attack. "Our religion is one of compassion and love," Musharraf Hussain, a member of the delegation from the Muslim Council of Britain, told reporters after arriving in Baghdad on Saturday.

The governor said Ghaffar had been a senior Taliban commander in northern Afghanistan and was arrested about two months after the U.S.-led coalition drove the militia out of power in late 2001. He spent eight months at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay before he was returned to Afghanistan. Khan said that after release, Ghaffar was appointed as the leader of Taliban fighters in Uruzgan, a rugged region believed to be a stronghold of the hardline Islamic militia. Three British men who travelled to Iraq to fight coalition forces have joined the terrorist group holding the Liverpool engineer Ken Bigley, according to a resistance leader with close links to the organisation. The men were accepted by followers of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most ruthless terrorist chief in Iraq, on the recommendation of "clerics abroad". Fred - Guy Fawkes day (Nov 5th) is very well celebrated over here. No, I don't think too many Muslims know the story...
I'm hoping to have a very good Nov 5th this year, as it will be hopefully the 3rd day of Bush's second term. It also coincides with it being a Friday night, so much ale will be consumed. If Kerry wins I'll get pissed 'cos we're all in trouble and I'll be dead worried. If Bush wins I'll get pissed because we'll be able to move into phase II of the WoT - putting the squeeze on the money men - yes SA, I'm looking at you!

I'll actually be in DC for the first time a week before the election, and will be trying to see some of the monuments (although the schedule for the event is pretty hairy so that might be difficult) and that will be pretty cool. I guess the place is going to be buttoned down tighter than a nuns drawers though - s'ok, we're in a war situation after all (it'll be the first time I've ever had my prints taken BTW...).

A car bomb in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has killed a senior member of Palestinian militant group Hamas. Izz El-Deen Sheikh Khalil died after the bomb exploded in his car, completely destroying it.
Hamas has accused Israel of the killing and threatened to retaliate with attacks inside Israel. The Israeli authorities had vowed to hit Hamas leaders "wherever they are" after suicide bomb attacks in August in Beersheba left 16 people dead. "We blame Mossad (the Israeli intelligence service) for putting a bomb in his car," Mushir al-Masri, a spokesman for Hamas told the AFP news agency in Gaza City. Israeli officials have not commented on Mr Khalil's death.

A statement from the Syrian interior ministry said the car had been booby-trapped.

The BBC's Dale Gavlak, in Damascus, says there is tight security around the blast scene as police conduct their investigation. She saw them remove the twisted wreckage of two cars. Witnesses told her they saw Mr Khalil get into his car and answer his mobile phone moments when the vehicle blew up.
"I'm off to the office, honey! [RING!]... Hmmm... Who could that be?... Hello? [KABOOM!]"
Three passers-by were injured.
"Excuse me, kind sir! Could you assist me in removing this bumper from my buttock?"
Israel claimed responsibility Sunday for a car bombing in Syria that killed a top Hamas leader.
"We dunnit, and we're glad!"
Israeli security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the car bombing killed Izz Eldine Subhi Sheik Khalil. The death was also reported on a Hamas Web site. Top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the army chief, have warned recently that no Hamas leader even those outside the Palestinian territories was safe.

I just saw a brief clip on CNN showing the wrecked car with civilians and army or police personnel milling around. Also some children. What was interesting about this was the lack of militancy and anger in the crowd. Almost as if the curious were crowding around a minor traffic accident.
This could be due to the time lapse since the bombing, but it probably has more to do with the fact that these incidents are comparatively rare in Syria.
Anyway, it couldn't have been more different from the rampaging Hamas mobs that follow targeted killings in, for example, the Gaza Strip.

And due to the fact that Syrians were not directly targeted. Could Syria be genuine about winding down Palestinian terror operations based in their country?

I posted an article from the Tele late yesterday about Baby Assad wanting to get Iran to take the Iraqi nuke scientists in the terrorist protection program off his hands. Seems he's figured out he's now between Iraq and a hard place (Israel).

UPDATE: Reports are that the bomb was placed under the driver's seat, in his own vehicle! Did he leave his door unlocked...or they 'slimJim'it somehow? In any event I'm sure the last thing on his mind was quite frankly...his own ass!

If not Baby Assad then certainly some connivance from him. It's certainly possible that he's determined that he has more to gain from starting to cooperate with Allawi and the US and Israel than from supporting Hamas or iraqi ba'athists or Zarqawi. The latter bring nothing but continued anarchy, chaos on his borders, and a continued US military presence that could well expand north if he sufficiently provokes us. He may be young but he seems at least somewhat rational in his calculations.

At least three policemen and a suspected Lashkar-e-Jhangvi militant were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a senior Pakistani police officer on Saturday, police said.Nisar Kazmi, a deputy superintendent of police, was critically wounded in the attack that also left two other policemen with bullet injuries. City police chief Parvez Rafi Bhatti said the attack appeared "sectarian" in nature because DSP Kazmi had been investigating a number of attacks on Shia Muslims in Quetta.
Police said Kazmi had been active in hunting down Al Qaeda-linked fighters in Balochistan."The gunmen were waiting near his home and opened fire as Kazmi's vehicle passed by, killing three policemen, seriously wounding the officer and also injuring two others," a local police officer said. Kazmi had supervised the investigation that led to the recent arrest of one of the most wanted alleged terrorists, Daud Badini, accused of masterminding the killings of more than 100 Shia Muslims in three attacks in the province since June 2003. Badini last week told a court that he had organised at least three major attacks on Shia Muslims in Quetta.
Kazmi is one of the good guys. Let's hope he survives his injuries.
Police said they later found the body of a suspected assailant who was shot by police during the ambush. Police also found blood on the vehicle the attackers had left behind which indicated one of them might have been injured. "Four assailants were involved in the attack and one of them was shot in the police fire but his accomplices took him away and left his body in a slum area, about half a kilometre from the scene," provincial police chief Chaudhry Yaqoob said. Police also found with the body an AK-47 rifle marked "LJ", which stands for the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi which was involved in numerous sectarian killings over the past decade. LJ is believed linked to the Al Qaeda network. Police said in the last six months it had arrested more than 10 high-level LJ member in Balochistan including Daud Badini. In a separate incident, the security forces arrested Mohammad Sadiq, an LJ activist, in Lahore in connection with an assassination attempt on President Musharraf in December.

Four people with alleged links to suspected Al-Qaeda operative Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi were arrested north of Baghdad together with a police officer, the provincial chief said accusing the group of carrying out attacks on police. The men were charged with involvement in a series of attacks on police stations in the town of Baquba in June that killed dozens, said General Walid Abdul Salam. He said a police officer with a rank of major was charged with providing intelligence and tip-offs to the four. Abdul Salam said Friday that four people suspected of involvement in assassinations in Baquba had been arrested. A machine gun, hand grenades, black masks and pro-Al-Qaeda literature was found with the group.

U.S. warplanes, tanks and artillery repeatedly hit at Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror network in the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah on Saturday, while two British Muslim leaders came to Baghdad to try to convince his followers to release a British hostage. The strikes in Fallujah targeted two buildings where militants were allegedly meeting and a cluster of rebel-built fortifications used to mount attacks on nearby Marine positions, the U.S. military said. Doctors said 16 people were killed and 37 wounded. In other violence, an American soldier was reported killed by a bomb Saturday, and the U.S. military said four Marines died in separate incidents Friday. A statement said the Marines were involved in a security operation in Anbar province, which includes Fallujah, Ramadi and other places that see frequent clashes between U.S. forces and insurgents. No further details were disclosed.

Three rebels were killed in a federal operation in the Ingush village of Surkhakhi, a Russian military spokesman told Interfax on Sunday morning. A reconnaissance group spotted a rebel group of about 20 members three kilometers from Surkhakhi, and opened fire, inflicting losses on the rebels, said Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the anti-terrorist headquarters in the North Caucasus. "The bodies of three rebels, as well as military equipment and ammunition, were discovered at the scene on Sunday morning. "Intelligence suggests that the rebels' losses are far greater," Shabalkin said.
