Peru Retries Shining Path Leader Guzman
The founder of Peru's Maoist Shining Path insurgency raised a defiant fist and proclaimed "glory to Marxism" in court Friday as the government retried him on terrorism charges a decade after he was sentenced to life in prison. The proceedings against Abimael Guzman were quickly suspended as his 15 co-defendants joined him, standing up and chanting revolutionary slogans. Cameras were then quickly cleared from the courtroom. The life sentence against Guzman was overturned last year by Peru's Constitutional Tribunal, which declared that the secret military court that convicted him was unconstitutional. Prosecutors filed new charges against Guzman and other convicted rebels in civilian court. Guzman, 69, mastermind of a bloody insurgency initiated in 1980 by a movement that envisioned a classless utopia, was captured in 1992 and sentenced by a secret military tribunal to life in prison without parole. A truth commission last year blamed the Shining Path for more than half of the nearly 70,000 deaths from the guerrilla conflict and the brutal state backlash.

Dutch Detain Eighth Van Gogh Suspect
Police have detained an eighth suspect in the slaying of a Dutch filmmaker, allegedly by a group accused of threatening to kill several Dutch politicians in the name of Islam, prosecutors said Saturday. The 23-year-old suspect, who was not named in a statement issued by Amsterdam prosecutors, was detained Friday. It was not clear if he was a Dutch citizen, but the statement specified that he was "of Moroccan origin." The suspects' ethnicity has become an issue because the government announced plans to revoke the Dutch citizenship of dual citizens suspected of terrorism.
Perhaps you should consider revoking their breathing rights?

Former Taliban Diplomat Arrested [Oh, the Humanity!]
A former senior spokesman for the ousted Taliban government in Afghanistan has been arrested for tax evasion. Noorullah Zadran, once first secretary for the U.S. office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, pleaded not guilty Thursday to four counts of tax fraud in Manhattan federal court, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in the Southern District of New York. Zadran "failed to report on his income tax returns all of his salary and other income that he received in the course of his employment" from 1998 to 2001, said David Kelley, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The former Taliban envoy was released after he posted $50,000 bail and surrendered his passport. Zadran's travels are restricted to New York City and Connecticut until his next court appearance on December 13. "Obviously times have been better but he's fine. He's dealing with the charges and the allegations," Zadran's attorney, Margaret Shalley, told CNN.
"... times have been better ..." And the award for greatest understatement by a lawyer in the defense of a world-class maggot goes to ...
During his tenure as a top Taliban spokesman in the United States, Zadran defended the Taliban's decision to allow al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to remain in Afghanistan. He also lobbied, unsuccessfully, for U.N. recognition of the government.
Quite obviously, the UN just wasn't given enough time.
Even when the Taliban controlled most of the country, the United Nations would only recognize a representative from the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, the leader who preceded the Taliban. Zadran consistently described bin Laden as a "guest" in Afghanistan, and said the Taliban told him "quite clearly that no political or military threat of any nature would be tolerated from the soil of Afghanistan."
Waaaait a minute ... their lips are moving!
In an effort to force the handover of bin Laden, the U.N. Security Council tightened sanctions in December 2000 and forced Taliban offices to close. In February 2001, Zadran's office in Flushing, Queens, was closed.
Flushing ... is there any more appropriate description of this turd's current position?

Israel-Palestine
Civil war warm up, Zionists or that red/blue wire thing - you decide!
A car exploded in the Palestinian city of Qalqilyah later on Saturday, killing two Palestinian militants and critically wounding a third, witnesses and medical sources said. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed wing of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, said the three casualties were its fighters and accused Israeli security forces of booby-trapping their car. An IDF source denied involvement in the Qalqilyah car blast. "None of our forces were even in the area at the time," the source said. Dozens of Palestinian militants have died when bombs they were assembling or transporting exploded prematurely.

Arafat Opened His Eyes, Communicated With Doctors, AFP Reports
"Rosebud!"
Ailing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat opened his eyes late yesterday and was able to communicate with doctors who were ``encouraged,'' Agence France-Presse reported, citing Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot. The 75-year-old Palestinian Authority president was flown from his West Bank compound in Ramallah to a French military hospital near Paris a week ago for treatment of a blood disorder. Israeli media reported Arafat brain dead on Thursday, which was denied by Palestinian officials. Arafat's health ``has not reached a stage that is irreversible, as some media have reported, and we hope his condition will improve in the Machines are keeping Arafat alive until his family and officials from France, Israel and Egypt decide where he will be buried, two unidentified Bush administration officials told the Associated Press.

Iraq-Jordan
Centcom: INSURGENTS TARGET CHILDREN OF RAMADI
An Army unit assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force, discovered and defused an explosive-laden youth center in Ramadi Nov. 4, which was rigged by insurgents to detonate and potentially kill dozens of Iraqi children.
fuckers
They also discovered more than two tons of explosives hidden in a mosque.
wotta surprise!
The discoveries were made during a sweep of the city looking for improvised explosive devices. After a thorough investigation of the youth center, the Soldiers discovered that the explosives were rigged to detonate three ways: through a light switch, a remote control and by wiring that ran from the youth center to the nearby Al-Haq Mosque, where the unit discovered the firing mechanism.
tell the locals how their kids were to become "martyrs"?
At another mosque, a search yielded the discovery of more than two tons of ammunition, explosives, mortar systems and RPGs. Artillery rounds; assault rifles and various IED-making materials were found, as well. Fifty suspected insurgents were also detained during the sweep. Mosques are granted protective status due to their religious and cultural significance. However, when insurgents violate the sanctity of the mosque by using the structure for military purposes, the site loses its protective status.
knock it down!
Great care is taken by the Soldiers, Sailors and Marines of I Marine Expeditionary Force, who are committed to assisting Iraqi Interim Government in providing security to Iraqi people.
Semper Fi, Pendleton!

U.S. Warplanes Pound Targets in Fallujah
U.S. warplanes pounded Fallujah late Friday in what residents called the strongest attacks in months, as more than 10,000 American soldiers and Marines massed for an expected assault. Iraq's prime minister warned the "window is closing" to avert an offensive. Residents reached by telephone said the aircraft were striking targets in the central city market that had not been hit since April as well as neighborhoods in the north, south and east of Fallujah. There was no confirmation from U.S. officials. Earlier Friday, residents said U.S. planes dropped leaflets urging women and children to leave the city, 40 miles west of the capital, Baghdad. As pressure mounted on the guerrilla stronghold, the insurgents struck back, killing one U.S. soldier and wounding five in a rocket attack. Clashes were reported at other checkpoints around the city and in the east and north of Fallujah late in the day.

For the past three nights, long convoys of American soldiers from Baghdad and Baqouba have rolled onto a dust-blown base on the outskirts of Fallujah, a city that has become the symbol of Iraqi resistance. U.S. commanders here have been coordinating plans either to fight their way into the city or isolate it from the rest of Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland. If they fight, American troops will face an estimated 3,000 insurgents dug in behind defenses and booby traps. Military planners believe there are about 1,200 hardcore insurgents in Fallujah — at least half of them Iraqis. They are bolstered by insurgent cells with up to 2,000 fighters in the surrounding towns and countryside. In Brussels, Belgium, Iraq's interim prime minister, Ayad Allawi, warned that the "window is closing" to avert an assault on Fallujah. Allawi must give the final go-ahead for the offensive, part of a campaign to curb the insurgency ahead of national elections planned for January.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Cop wounded in clash with Shia procession
A police constable was shot and injured on Friday when several people taking part in a procession marking Hazrat Ali's (RA) death anniversary clashed with police. Quetta Nazim Rahim Kakar said the district administration had ordered the procession to shorten its route as part of security measures taken by the administration to avoid violence. But the procession disregarded the administration's orders and tried to use its originally planned route. This caused tension in the area and traders and businessmen shut their shops. Traffic also came to a standstill in the Liaqat Bazaar and Meezan Chowk areas and Abdus Sattar Road. Tensions flared as police tried to stop the procession near McCongy Road and a few shots were fired. A constable was shot and injured and he was taken to hospital in stable condition. The Quetta nazim said it took about half an hour to pacify the people and diffuse tensions and the procession continued on its way.
