Clashes at Terror Raids
Angry crowds greeted police in Manchester when they raided three homes under anti-terror laws. Forensic searches of the properties were made following the arrest of a man on Monday. Residents say they are being picked on because they are Muslims. Officers clashed with local people angry that they were taking away an elderly woman in a wheelchair. Residents said they were not being told what was happening. No further arrests were thought to have resulted. Officers raided two addresses in Great Western Street, Rusholme, and a third property nearby. The spokesman said: "As a consequence of an arrest of a man in Manchester, a number of addresses have been searched under the Terrorism Act 2000. "Police investigations are ongoing."

Doesn't apply to law enforcement, does it?

As for the howitzer -- don't they have "beehive" rounds for them?

#8  The 155mm howitzer has a nasty flechette round that consists of 2350 inch-and-a-half long flechettes about as big around as a kitchen match wrapped around an explosive core. Each flechette has fins for stability. They do a number on just about anything. Saw a photo of a group of VC caught by one in SEA. The VC were leading two water buffalo well-draped with explosives, which didn't go off on impact. It didn't matter - they looked like humps of raw hamburger. Would be a rather nasty weapon to use on a street riot. I think a Bradley chain gun would be more humane, and easier to direct.

Spain arrests three suspects linked to ETA leader
French police have arrested three people linked to the suspected chief of Spain's armed Basque separatist group ETA, police sources said. One of the three was the brother of a man who harboured the suspected ETA leader, Mikel "Antza" Albizu Iriarte, and his girlfriend, Soledad "Anboto" Iparagirre Genetxea, before their arrest 3 October, while the other two were a couple who looked after the ETA suspects' young son for three years, they said. Spanish and French officials have said that the arrest of Albizu Iriarte and Iparagirre Genetxea decapitated ETA, which has been blamed for the deaths of more than 800 people in its three-decade campaign for an independent Basque homeland.

Appeal of Madrid 'mastermind' in Italian courts
Prosecutors have asked an Italian court to throw out an appeal by a suspect in the deadly train bombings in Madrid against his extradition to Spain for trial. The Court of Cassation was expected to rule later on Wednesday in the case of Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, otherwise known as "Mohammed the Egyptian," who was arrested on 8 June in Milan on a Spanish arrest warrant. He is fighting an extradition order made by the northern city's appeal court on 30 July. Madrid believes he is one of the brains behind the synchronised blasts which killed 191 people aboard commuter trains in the Spanish capital and wants to try him on charges of multiple homicide and possession of explosives.

JI members say Bashir's the boss
Two Malaysian militants testifying in the trial of Abu Bakar Ba'asyir acknowledged on Tuesday that the elderly cleric was the spiritual leader of the regional terrorist group, Jamaah Islamiyah (JI). Malaysians Syamsul Bahri and Amran bin Mansur, who fled to Indonesia in 2002 and 2003 respectively to avoid arrest by the Malaysian police, also admitted that they were members of JI, which is the United Nations has declared a terrorist organization.

Bahri said he was told by Mukhlas, who was sentenced to death for his role in the Bali bombings, that the white-haired cleric assumed the JI leadership after founder Abdullah Sungkar died in 1999. Meanwhile, Amran, also known by his Indonesian name, Andi Saputro, said that he had also heard that Ba'asyir took over the JI leadership following the death of Abdullah Sungkar.

"I did hear people saying that Ba'aysir was selected to replace Abdullah Sungkar as JI leader but some people also said that it was Abu Rusdan, not Abu Bakar Ba'asyir," said Amran.

Both witnesses admitted that they had received military training during their time as JI members from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. "Mukhlas, who is my brother-in-law, offered me an opportunity to go to Pakistan to learn more about Islam, and when I arrived there I found much to my surprise that it was actually some sort of military training that was involved," Bahri said. He also said that he had been training to handle explosives in Pakistan and later learned how to make detonators in Solo, Central Java, after he fled to Indonesia in 2002.

Amran also admitted that he went to Camp Abubakar in the southern Philippines to receive further military training for around one month in 1998, and continued his training in Pakistan before heading for Kabul, Afghanistan, where he stayed for four months learning how to handle weapons.

Both witnesses said that they knew Azahari and Noordin Moch Top, believed to be the masterminds behind the Mariott bombing in August last year.

"At first I did not believe that JI members were behind the Bali and Marriott bombings because as far as I knew, our teachings did not permit such things (bombings). "However, I later learned that my fellow members Azahari and Noordin were suspected by the police of taking part in the Marriott bombing," Bahri said.

Report of Janjalani in Sabah may be a false alarm
The latest Philippines claim that top Abu Sayyaf leader Khadaffy Janjalani and a group of about 20 followers had escaped into Sabah may be a false alarm. "We believe it is a false alarm. There is no indication showing that Janjalani and his group had entered Sabah," state's Fifth Infantry Brigade Brig Jen Mohd Shahrin Abdul Majid said yesterday. The latest claim came from Tawi Tawi governor Sadikul Sahali who claimed the leader of the Abu Sayaff with links to Jemaah Islamiah had "escaped to Mardanas and Mamanok islands in Malaysia" from Sibutu town in Tawi Tawi. Brig Jen Mohd Shahrin said security forces stayed on high alert against any intrusions.

11 people killed in communist attack in northern Philippines
Ten soldiers were killed when communist terrorists rebels attacked them while on their way to a rescue mission in a northern Philippine province battered by a storm, a military spokesman said on Wednesday. Lieutenant Colonel Preme Monta said one terrorist guerrilla was also killed in an ensuing firefight Tuesday in San Rafael town, Bulacan province, 75 kilometres north of Manila. Monta said the soldiers were on their way to provide aid to flood victims when about 80 communist terrorists rebels attacked them. "The clash resulted in the death of nine enlisted men and a first lieutenant," he said. "We have recovered one dead terrorist body from the enemy side."

"The soldiers were to conduct assistance and disaster relief operations in the area which suffered floodings brought about by a tropical depression," he added. "The terrorists rebels took advantage of the situation." Peace talks between the government and the communist terrorists rebels were stalled in August because of the continued inclusion of the terrorists guerrillas in the lists of international terrorist organizations by the United States and the European Union. The terrorists rebels accused the government of not doing enough to persuade Washington and Brussels to remove them from their terrorist lists.
Like this is going to help?

Iraq-Jordan
Sectarian divisions after Falluja
Beyond the innumerable expressions of defiance at the loss to the insurgents of Falluja, some expressions of pessimism have crept into jihadist forums - always a useful barometer of mujahideen morale. The fall of the city is of great significance "since it was considered the citadel of the Sunnis who were counting on its persistence as a military force to support their political policy and guarantee them against marginalization", as one thoughtful contributor to the alsakifah.org forum put it. However, he went on to note what he felt was the more ominous development, "the beginning of the empowerment of the Shi'ites".

The search for scapegoats has received a boost, and it is taking the form of exacerbated sectarian tension. The leader of the Salafi Movement in Iraq, Sheikh Mahdi As-Sumaidai, in a November 11 interview to the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat, (http://www.alhayat.com), openly accused Shiite forces of "seeking and inciting the option of war against Falluja and other Sunni areas", and called upon the Shi'ite ulema (scholars) and hawza (Central authority) to issue a fatwa banning the participation of Shi'ite soldiers in the fighting. The fact that there were Shi'ite Iraqis at all in the ranks of the National Guard fighting in collaboration with the coalition forces has been a point of considerable tension. On 19 November, Mufakkirat al-Islam (http://www.islammemo.cc/news) reported with outrage the sight of the black flags of the Shi'ite Hawza in Falluja, and the presence of National Guard bearing "an image of what the Shiites call 'Imam Ali' and 'Imam al-Husayn' (the two major religious figures in Shi'ite Islam). Some of the pictures bear the inscription, "With the blessings of our Master Ali we are entering Falluja!" There followed reports of "massacres of unarmed civilians
the mutilation of corpses" and the conclusion that the Shiite soldiers were "motivated by sectarian hatred fed by declarations and fatwas from the religious figures of the Shi'ite Hawza at Najaf".

The reported 'silence' of the supreme Shiite authority, Ayatollah Ali as-Sistani, on events in Falluja have fed Sunni convictions of a conspiracy against the community, a sentiment shared by nationalist authors outside the country. On 22 November, Osama Saraya commented in the Cairo daily al-Ahram (http://www.ahram.org.eg): "The suspicious silence and double standards of the [Iraqi Shiite] religious marja'iyyahs
have raised many doubts" which led him to deduce that "the US occupation is now trying to plant the seeds of sedition between the Arabs and the Iranians who have immigrated to Iraq under Shi'ite pretenses".

US, British troops raid old Baathist retreat
Hundreds of U.S. and British troops raided homes of insurgent suspects at first light on Wednesday in an area that was once a favored country retreat of Saddam Hussein's Baath party elite. Scottish soldiers from the Black Watch regiment and a force from the U.S. 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) cordoned off several km (miles) of the west bank of the Euphrates river, some 30 miles south of Baghdad, and were scouring villas and farms for Sunni Muslim militants and hidden stocks of weapons. This reporter with the U.S. Marines saw them position tanks across a main intersection to form one end of the cordon. The British troops, who included marine commandos, were using Warrior armored vehicles to seal their area of search. American high-speed riverboats went into action when a group of men tried to escape the area by water, U.S. officers said. U.S. and Iraqi troops rounded up 15 suspected militants during the operation, the military said in a statement, raising to 210 the number detained in the past eight days of raids.Hours later troops were still scouring date palm groves and farmland for signs of buried weapons.

Separately, an insurgent attempting to plant a roadside bomb along a highway through the area was killed when one of the two mortar rounds he was using exploded prematurely, the army said. A suicide car bomber detonated his vehicle in the same area, killing himself and wounding seven civilians, officials said. Following on from their assault last month on Sunni rebels in the city of Falluja, some 40 miles upstream, the latest operations are part of an effort to stifle the insurgency before an national election planned for the end of next month. British and American helicopters and U.S. jets were in the air in support, responding to occasional mortar rounds fired in the U.S. sector. About 50 Iraqi police commandos searched homes in the small nearby town of Jurf as-Sakher. In all, more than 400 men took part on the ground. "West of the river is a stronghold of the old regime, the summer homes of senior officials," said Lieutenant Colonel Bob Durkin of the Marines, who commands a base close to the nearby town of Iskandariya, on the east bank of the river.

U.S. commanders in the north of Babil province, which some have dubbed the "triangle of death" for its frequent attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces, believe wealthy former officials have helped plan and fund bomb and mortar attacks. Two Marines were killed by a roadside bomb near Iskandariya two nights ago and comrades involved in the raids said they were keen for revenge but frustrated by the difficulties of tracking down the culprits. Durkin said some more religiously inspired fighters, who look to the likes of Jordanian al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had come into the area since the offensive in Falluja.

Pakistani paper ordered to stop printing Binny's picture, screeds
Pakistani authorities have told a newspaper to stop publishing photos and sermons of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and elusive Taliban founder Mullah Omar. Urdu-language daily Ummat has been printing the wanted pair's images and sayings since late 2001, when a US-led military campaign ousted Afghanistan's hardline Islamic Taliban militia from power. "We have issued a notice, asking them to explain from where they were getting these sayings and statements of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar every day," Sindh provincial government spokesman Salahuddin Haider said.
Does raise a few questions, doesn't it?
Mr Haider says that the two have been declared international terrorists so the Government had a right to know from where the newspaper is getting the material. He says that there are "strong suspicions" that the newspaper might be getting funds from groups linked to Taliban and Al Qaeda. The newspaper says it has already ceased publishing material on bin Laden and Omar, but denies receiving funds from any group. "We have received the notice on Tuesday, but had stopped publishing the sayings and photographs three days back," a senior official of the newspaper said.

Britain: Kidnapped Aid Worker Likely Dead
Dental records have shown that a mutilated body found in Iraq is not that of kidnapped aid worker Margaret Hassan, but British officials say they still believe the British-Irish citizen is dead. The Foreign Office said dental tests were conducted in the United States on a body found in Fallujah by U.S. Marines, who believed it was that of a Western woman. The tests showed the body wasn't Hassan's, a Foreign Office spokesman said. He said he believed the tests had been unable to establish the body's identity. The belief that Hassan was killed was based on a video that reportedly shows a blindfolded woman being shot in the head by her captors. The Foreign Office spokesman maintained that the woman in the video was likely Hassan and that she is probably dead.
Normally, when there's a video of someone being shot in the head, the person's dead, even if the body's not found.

Pentagon Sending More Troops to Iraq
The Pentagon is sending elements of the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C., to Iraq to bolster security in advance of Iraq's election, scheduled for late January, an Army official said Wednesday. In addition, at least two Army brigades now operating in northern Iraq will have their tours extended by about two months, until after the election.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Pakistan violence leaves one dead
A suspected Islamic militant has been killed and 11 policemen injured in a shootout in south-west Pakistan, police have said. The police believe the man killed in the shootout in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, is a Chechen. The exchange of fire happened when police launched a raid on a house where militants had taken shelter. The police said the shootout happened when the militants hurled grenades and opened fire on the policemen.
Yup, I'd call that a shootout.
The police said one suspected militant was arrested during the raid. "They were Chechens and were suspected of having links with al-Qaeda," a senior police official told Reuters.
"Brilliant, Holmes! How do you do it?"

More details: Police sources told Geo that the operation began on Tuesday night was completed in Wednesday morning at 7:00 am. Police was trying to confirm identity and nationality of the killed terror suspect. The shootout erupted after the suspects hurled hand grenades and opened fire when police launched a pre-dawn raid on a house in Kali Payend Khan injuring 11 policemen including SSP and DSP. Police captured grenades, explosives and other ammunition from the house. Four foreign nationals had tried to loot a moneychanger shop in Quetta on Monday and escaped after the bid. An employee of the shop followed the dacoits and a Chechen dacoit Abdul Ghaffar was captured.
Tried a stickup and got trailed to their lair.
The police raid was launched on indication of the arrested dacoit.
"Ouch, ouch, they're hiding over there! Just put those pliers down!"
All four dacoits were foreign nationals who were escaped from the South Waziristan area of Wana, police sources said.

Hey, where did Achmed go?
EFL:
Multinational troops have arrested 210 suspected militants in a weeklong crackdown against insurgents in an area south of Baghdad known as the "triangle of death," the U.S. military command said Wednesday. On Wednesday, the military said in a statement that Iraqi government forces and U.S. Marines rounded up 15 new suspects during operations on Tuesday, bringing the total to 210. A militant was killed when a mortar round he was planting near a busy road in the area exploded prematurely, it said. The operation, codenamed Plymouth Rock, was launched in part as a follow-up to last month's assault on Fallujah, the main insurgent bastion 40 miles west of Baghdad. U.S. commanders want to cut off escape routes for Fallujah fighters and pacify the troubled region ahead of national elections in January. Separately, U.S. troops detained 17 suspected militants during a series of raids on Tuesday in and around Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city.

#5  WaPo had something the other day, on how theyve made reforms at Abu Graib and elsewhere in the Iraqi detentions system since the scandal broke, and how now theyve detained about 4000 (!!!!!) more in Fallujah and related operations, doubling the number of detainees, and yes, it will put the new, reformed, detention system to the test.

Iraqi detainees are held in Iraq. Some dispute as to whether foreign jihadis caught in Iraq can be sent overseas to the general WOT detention system (which consists of Gitmo, some unnamed detention centers - generally assumed to include Diego Garcia - and prisions in "friendly" arab states like Jordan)

Lesser folks are sent to the tender mercies of their home countries, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, etc. Some of these countries are quicker to release than others.

Egypt detaining 3,000 over Red Sea resort bombings
Either they're rooting out the entire Islamist infrastructure, or they've just rounded up a mob...
The Egyptian authorities have detained as many as 3,000 people after the bomb attacks in October that targeted Israeli holidaymakers at Red Sea resorts, according to local and international human rights groups. Security operations have centred on the North Sinai town of El Arish, home to a Palestinian man claimed by the authorities to have plotted and carried out the bombings, along with eight Egyptians.
Sounds like they've arrested the entire population, to include suckling babes...
Egyptian human rights activists and lawyers say detainees are being held in jails across the Sinai without access to lawyers or family members. In some cases they have been tortured, according to a statement by Amnesty International released this week.
Damn. They didn't round up the Amnesia International guyz. Too bad...
The large number of arrests raises questions about the official Egyptian version of events, which pinned responsibility for the attacks on a small group of mostly criminal and Bedouin elements from the Sinai region. Egypt's interior ministry said at the end of October that the group was stirred up by Israeli incursions into the occupied Palestinian territories and suggested they had acted independently of any wider terrorist network.
Which of course don't exist in Egypt.
Security officials have not responded to reports about further mass detentions, although the governor of North Sinai said they were part of continuing investigations. The mainly Bedouin inhabitants of the Sinai have no previous record of association with Islamic extremism, according to Diaa Rashwan, an expert at the Al Ahram Centre for Strategic and Political studies. Detainees include women and children held in an attempt to force a relative to turn himself in and others picked up randomly from outside mosques and on the streets, said Hafez Abu Saadeh, director of the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights.

#1  The Bedouin loathe the Paleos. Israel would be well advised to consider a Bedouinistan in the Sinai. Would fit nicely with Drusistan to the North and East.

#5  bulldog - well the beduin dont exactly let there wives go out for a stroll. But then the Israelis have never seen any reason to encourage Beduin wives to go out for a stroll. They certainly dont subscribe to the notion of war on the Jews and Christians. Some of us here have had difficulty seperating out pre-medieval social mores from the POLITICAL ideology of salafi-jihad.

Mainly its that the beduin dont see themselves as NATIONALLY close to the settled Palestinians. Similar distinction in Jordan.
