19 arrested in sham marriage scheme - green cards for cash
Posted by: Snesing Glomoting5887 || 09/08/2006 00:00 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Authorities arrested 19 people Thursday after uncovering a scheme that arranged as many as 1,000 phony marriages in northern Virginia between U.S. citizens seeking cash and illegal immigrants seeking green cards, going back as far as 2002. Most of those involved in the scheme were from Ghana. Charged were "facilitators" who brokered the marriages for fees ranging from $2,500 to $6,000, illegal immigrants who wanted a marriage as a way to obtain permanent residency, and U.S. citizens who received initial payments of $500 plus monthly installments totaling up to $3,600 for participating. The charges include immigration fraud and marriage fraud, punishable by 10 years and 5 years in prison, respectively.

Poor SwissTex. Clearly this is a common misuse of the word facilitator.

#2  How about "pimp" instead TW?

#3  Too bad there is no possibility of deporting all parties of these sham marriages.
Posted by: ed || 09/08/2006 11:02 Comments || Top||

#4  Food for thought: Why should arranged marriages be illegal in the United States? What makes this any different than arranged marriages in other countries? There is no law in the US that mandates people be "in love" or even have met before the nuptuals. Understandably, many of these people want to be allowed to remain in this great country of ours, however, I don't see where a crime has necessarily been committed.

Ethically, these marriages are probably not a good idea, but deportation on the grounds of marriage without the sake of "love" (which is a 20th century concept, by the way), is flimsy.

#5  There is no law in the US that mandates people be "in love" or even have met before the nuptuals

Actually, US Imigration law requires that the couple prove that they have met in person at least once in order to get a visa. Its on the USCIS website.

#6  Why should arranged marriages be illegal in the United States

Because the reason betrothed and spouses are given visas to enter is that this is a humanitarian gesture to keep a committed family together. Sham marriages solely to get visas are an abuse of the immigration law and its intent.

#7  Pimp? I wouldn't choose that term, Gravise Thoth9486, as it's generally used to refer to the rental of sex, rather than the sale of legalized residence. It does have a certain rhetorical effect, though... ;-)

#8  "Why should arranged marriages be illegal in the United States?"

Generally speaking, "arranged marriages" are not against the law. People that have immigrated here from India still "arrange" marriages for their kids.

However, these marriages referred to in the article are more of a financial transaction, with the intent to defraud the US government. Or, in other words, obtaining something by way of false pretext for financial compensation.

Now do you understand?

#9  Vickerina, if you think about it biologically and Darwinistically, you might come to the conclusion that arranged marriages are bad for the gene pool. I mean, if you are someone who looks like Joan Blondell and you are coerced into a marriage with Achmed Amenihandjob, who would otherwise be biologically unable to attract a mate because he is so frickin ugly and unpleasant, and you have children, that will pollute the gene pool. Not only that but it prevents the equivalent of Clark Gable from having any chance with you. Instead, he has to settle for some gal who weighs 300 pounds and sports a mustache. Think about the impact a process like that could have on a society over a period of several hundred years. Not only that but the concept of romance goes right out the window and along with it most of the great art, literature and music that Western Civilization has ever produced.

It might also produce some extremely unhappy people because they are not going to get the good lovin' they need if there is no physical attraction and no emotional or intellectual connection. You might as well do it with a goat.

#11  Ive been through the Fiancee Visa process when I brought my wife over here. Here is a brief overview of the process. For an aspiring couple it can be a very long and frustrating process.

Arranged marrages are not illegal per-se. But Visa fraud is. A K-1 fiancee visa is about the quickest immigration-type visa you can get. Its even faster then a spousal visa (where you married outside the US and now want to bring you spouse in). Fiancee visa is designed to allow an american citizen to bring in a fiancee for the intent of marriage and starting a life together and the process reflects that.

A Fiancee Visa requires that the couple meet in person and have recent evidence of such. (I had airline tickets, passport pages, and pictures of us and her family). And the US Citizen has to sign a affadavit of support to support financally the non-resident (citizen or legal resident) for a long period of time. That is a big commitment in itself - if the non-citizen seeks welfare or other means-based benefits uncle sam can come after the citizen for the cash.

Once a visa is awarded (after an interview, medical exam, and background checks and God knows what else) it has a time limit of (I think) 90 days to be used and the visa is only legal for 90 days after entry (and only 1 entry) - during that time the couple should get legally married and apply for an 'Adjustment of Status' to get a 'conditional' green card for the non-citizen. the AOS entails an interview and you must show that you are merging your finances and that process can take several months.

The conditional green card last for 2 years at the end of which you need to apply for 'removal of conditions' showing further evidence that you are commited to the marrage.

Its possible for the non-citizen to have the conditions removed early in cases of physical and mental abuse (and there are lots of stores of false claims of that as well) or death of the citizen-spouse.

Afghanistan
Suicide car bomb kills 16 in Kabul
A massive car bomb exploded near the U.S. embassy in Kabul on Friday, killing at least 16 people including up to seven foreigners, the worst suicide attack in the city since the Taliban were overthrown in 2001. The attack on a packed road of pharmacies and restaurants appeared aimed at a U.S. military convoy and came ahead of Monday's fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks,

Police and rescue officials said at least 16 people, including up to seven foreign soldiers or security contractors, were killed in the explosion that stripped trees, wrecked cars and shattered windows for several hundred metres. "Some of them turned into pieces," a policeman said as rescue crews hosed down fires and washed blood and body parts from the road, metres from the entrance to the U.S. embassy.

Many of the Afghan dead were poor street cleaners preparing the area for the anniversary of the death of freedom fighter Ahmed Masood, whose brown marble monument is nearby. Taliban rebels told Reuters by satellite phone they made the attack, but did not say what the target was. The Taliban denies attacking civilians, but many raids aimed at foreigners kill more Afghans than soldiers.

The U.S. military said at last two of its personnel were killed in the Kabul attack.
Rest at link.

NATO Wants More Troops to Fight Taliban
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - NATO's top military commander said Thursday that he needs more troops to fight the Taliban terrorists in southern Afghanistan, where a widening insurgency has left hundreds of Taliban terrorists dead, including 21 terrorists militants in the alliance's latest air and ground attacks.

U.S. Gen. James L. Jones acknowledged NATO had been surprised by the "level of intensity" of Taliban attacks since the alliance took over from American-led coalition forces in the south in August.

NATO officials say current troop levels are enough to combat terrorists militants in southern deserts and mountain ranges, or crossing from neighboring Pakistan. But the vast battlefield in the south provides ample cover for terrorists insurgents familiar with the terrain and the region's tribes. Additional air support and as many as 2,500 new, highly mobile reserve troops would help finish the conflict faster, the officials said.

Jones, speaking in Belgium after a visit to Afghanistan, said NATO needed "additional insurance in terms of some forces that can be there, perhaps temporarily, to make sure that we can carry the moment." That could take the form of helicopters, transport planes and "flexible" reserve troops able to move quickly to support NATO forces battling militants.

Jones later told reporters at the Pentagon by telephone that he was seeking roughly 2,000 to 2,500 extra NATO troops for the south. He said they would bring the NATO contribution up to 100 percent - up from 85 percent - of the force level pledged by allied governments before the southern deployment. There are now about 20,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Jones said he was confident that generals from the 26 NATO nations, meeting Friday and Saturday in Warsaw, Poland, would authorize the reinforcements. "In the relatively near future, certainly before the winter, we will see this decisive moment in the region turn in favor of the troops that represent the government," he said. "It will help us to reduce casualties and bring this to a successful conclusion in a short period of time."

#2  The terrers had the American's number and it was something they didn't want to come up against anytime soon. However, all that whiny and handwringing that's been coming out of Eurasia about the WOT, they thought you boys would be an easier push over. So they came out to play. The NATO crowd saw the American performance, and clean up on aisle 3, and thought 1) the heavy job had already been done and 2) if the Yanks could do it so easily, so could they. Surprise. Maybe we'll hear a lot less talk, though I doubt it, by some [pick your favorite nationality] general criticing American military performance in the future.

Egypt Sentences 3 Extremists to Death
ISMAILIA, Egypt (AP) - A state security court Thursday sentenced three members of an Islamic militant group to death for their role in several attacks in Egypt's Sinai peninsula that killed dozens of people in the past two years. Judge Ahmed al-Khashab of the Supreme Emergency State Security Court read the verdicts of the three of 14 defendants, then adjourned the case until Nov. 30, when the verdicts for the remaining 11 will be given.

Younes Mohammed Mahmoud, Osama Mohammed Abdul-Ghani and Mohammed Jaez Sabbah are members of the Tawhid and Jihad group blamed for the attacks in Taba and Sharm el-Sheik.

The October 2004 bombings in the resorts of Taba and nearby Ras Shitan, killed 34 people, while the July 2005 attack in Sharm el-Sheik left 64 dead. Some analysts said the attacks bore the hallmarks of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network but Egyptian officials have dismissed involvement by the group, insisting they were the work of a domestic group known as Tawhid and Jihad.

#2  Metzger said she had been abducted by three young men and a woman in a minibus and held in a rural area 30 miles from Bishkek, Suvanaliyev told The Associated Press, citing local police in Kant, where he said she approached the first house she came to. He said she looked exhausted and her hair was dyed. That account differed somewhat from one given by Metzger's father-in-law, Kelly Mayo, who said in a telephone interview with the AP from Colorado Springs, Colo., that Metzger was found on the side of the road with her head shaven.

Belgian neo-Nazis in 'terror plot' bagged
Belgian police yesterday arrested 17 alleged neo-Nazis, mostly serving soldiers, who were said to be planning to destabilise the country's institutions in a series of terrorist attacks. In simultaneous raids on five army barracks and 18 private addresses across the northern Flanders half of Belgium, police uncovered a homemade bomb and numerous weapons.
Good. As Indiana Jones would say, "Nazis. I hate these guys."
The raids by 150 police officers in East Flanders, Antwerp and Limburg were the most dramatic breakthrough in a two-year investigation into far-right activists allegedly operating inside the armed forces.

The federal prosecutor's office described the arrested people as mainly "soldiers and people with an extreme right ideology who clearly express themselves through racism, xenophobia, Holocaust denial, anti-semitism and neo-Nazism". The main suspect, who is a member of the neo-Nazi Blood and Honour Flanders group, recruited in military bases throughout Flanders, the Flemish-speaking half of Belgium.

The arrests are likely to have a strong impact in Belgium, where mainstream politicians are bracing themselves for significant advances by the hard-right Vlaams Belang party in next month's local elections. The party insists it is non-violent, however, and distances itself from neo-Nazis.

#1  Kewl!!! The Msm finally has its "right"-wing homegrown threat, so they will be able to press all the european public's buttons. #6  We must be careful not to blame all Nazis for the actions of a disturbed few. Many Nazis are peaceful citizens who will never harm anyone. Every ideology has its troublemakers, and we must not let Naziism be hijacked by those who do not understand its true meaning. A "war on Naziism" would be counterproductive, driving moderate Nazis into the extremist camp.

As long as we're clear on that.

Adam Gadahn Indicted
ABC News has confirmed that Adam Gadahn, the American who converted to Islam and joined al Qaeda, has been charged in a sealed indictment with providing material support to terrorism.

Gadahn recently appeared with al Qaeda's No. 2 in command Ayman Zawahiri exhorting Americans to convert to Islam. Gadahn, in addition to helping al Qaeda with propaganda and communications, is also suspected of helping al Qaeda with English translations and understanding U.S. culture and vulnerabilities. Charges may be announced in the next week. Officials have also considered charging Gadahn with treason.

Officials believe that Gadahn is now a top ranking member of al Qaeda and that he is in Pakistan.
Bet he's in North Wazoo right now. Bet we have people looking for him.

3 indicted in US for trying sell secrets to Yemen
Three men have been indicted for allegedly trying to obtain defense information and stolen military equipment from an undercover US government agent, federal prosecutors said. Amen Ahmed Ali, 56, received what he believed to be secret defense documents from the agent and sent them to Yemen by fax or courier on several occasions since last year, federal prosecutors said.

Ali was arrested at his cigarette shop in Bakersfield about 180 kilometers north of Los Angeles, on Thursday. He was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate in Bakersfield on Friday. The arrest came after a two-year operation and investigation.

India-Pakistan
Blasts near Indian mosque kill 20
At least 20 people have been killed and 150 injured after at least two blasts near a mosque in the west Indian town of Malegaon, officials said. The first explosion happened as hundreds of Muslims left the Nurani mosque in the rural town after prayers on the Islamic festival day of Shab-e-Barat, police and reports said. "My people are telling me that there are around 20-plus bodies lying inside the (hospital) campus," following the explosions, said L.N. Chauhan, chief medical officer of the privately run Wadia hospital. "Around 150 patients had been brought to our hospital and we treated some of them and sent the rest to (the city's two) other hospitals," he said by telephone from Malegaon.

Police said one blast was heard near a graveyard on a day when Muslims traditionally remember their ancestors and offer prayers at their graves. It is a key date ahead of the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims believe that all sins will be forgiven by praying to Allah throughout Shab-e-Barat, the Night of Blessing.

A curfew was declared as state politicians from western Maharashtra and police teams headed to the area, some 180 kilometres north of the economic centre of Mumbai. Police, who said they did not know the cause of the blasts, were on high alert across the state of western Maharashtra, and mobile telephone networks in the town were down. "I am confirming some blasts," police chief P.K. Jain told NDTV news channel." I do not know what has caused the blasts." Details of casualties taken to the other two hospitals in the town were not immediately available.

Sounds to me like some Wahabi types deciding to eliminate some muslims committing "heretical" practices like visiting graves and stuff.

Checkpost under attack in tribal regions as security forces vacate them
(KUNA) -- Suspected militants fired several rockets at a military checkpost in Pakistani tribal regions on Thursday, a day after security forces started vacating the checkposts in the neighboring agency and handing over the control to the Khasadar force, said officials.
"Sir! Sir! We're being rocketed!"
"Hmmm... I suspect they might be militant!"
Militants fired more than five rockets at a checkpost in the Shakai area of South Waziristan tribal agency but there was no loss of life, security officials told KUNA.
How many more than five rockets?
Meanwhile, after signing a peace deal with pro-Taliban local militants on Tuesday in neighboring North Waziristan tribal agency, the political authorities and tribal militants exchanged weapons and vehicles on Wednesday, said press reports.
... and big, wet, sloppy kisses.
According to the signed agreement, both parties will return each others arms and communication equipments snatched in the operations. Reports said that the authorities had abolished 11 new checkpoints and the army had evacuated outposts in the area. Now the tribal Khasadar force and paramilitary troops were jointly manning old checkpoints in the agency, they added.

#4  This is the funny part. All the outrage about the North Wazoo treaty is based on the notion that either side intends to follow it, or that they for one instant believe that their enemy will follow it.

Heck, the time when MOST to be afraid in Pakistan is when somebody offers to quit fighting you. That either means they are preparing for a major attack, or you have totally crippled them.

But darn they did know how to fix curried goat.

Booby traps? LOL! great idea!

LeT wanted to kill Vajpayee, Advani
BANGALORE: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists arrested in connection with the IISc attack have revealed during a narco-analysis test that they had planned to attack Vidhana Soudha, Hewlett-Packard (HP) buildings, a mosque and the RSS building on HAL Road. They also wanted to target ex-PM A B Vajpayee and BJP leader L K Advani. LeT cadres visited the places and conducted a recce to stage the attacks, starting with a mosque on December 31, then buildings of HP, followed by Vidhana Soudha.

The accused — Razi-ur-Rehman alias Abdul Rehman, LeT's southern India commander, and Afsar Pasha (28) — were subjected to the narco-analysis at Bowring Hospital on Jan 31. Rehman revealed he had planned to target Vidhana Soudha. He informed the interrogators that he wanted to plant a bomb between 3.30 and 4 pm when a large crowd would be present and security would be thin. Had they succeeded, he said, they could have created huge losses to the government and become more powerful. Pasha said he visited Vidhana Soudha regularly and had also chosen the time and spot of the attack.

Their next action plan was to target Vajpayee and Advani. Pasha said he had knowledge of the IISc attack three weeks before the incident. Rehman said LeT leader Abu Ali from Pakistan had assigned the task of attacking IISc to a certain Salim. A resident of UP, Salim, aged around 25, had come to Bangalore with his associates in an Ambassador car. They had received weapons like AK-56 from Pakistan. Rehman said his friend Aslam was with Salim to carry out the attack. Salim was arrested in Hyderabad. Their hide-out was a leather business centre in Bangalore, Rehman said. Giving details about LeT and its network in south India, Rehman said Abu Hamza and Sheikh Mohammed funded the attack.

Shootings, blasts kill at least 20
Insurgent attacks ripped across Baghdad on Thursday. At least 20 people were killed and 24 bodies were found dumped in the capital -- killings that bore the hallmarks of sectarian violence. The bodies were found in various neighborhoods, police said. The dumping of these remains has been linked with Sunni-Shiite retribution killings.

In the bloodiest attack, at least 10 people were killed and several others were wounded when a suicide car blast occurred near Iraqi emergency police headquarters in the southeastern neighborhood of Alwiya, emergency police said. Three vehicles and nearby shops were damaged in the bombing. Officers were refueling their vehicles in an industrial area behind the police station when the attack took place, police said.

In northern Baghdad, three people were killed and 13 others wounded when a car bomb exploded Thursday morning near a joint police and army patrol in the Qahira neighborhood, a Baghdad emergency police official said. A suicide car bomb also detonated outside a fueling station close to the Iraqi Interior Ministry complex in central Baghdad's Bab al-Shurji district, police officials said. Two police officers were killed and 23 other people were wounded, including six police officers, a source said.

In southern Baghdad's Dora neighborhood, two police officers were killed in a drive-by shooting. Three police officers were wounded when two roadside bombs exploded there. In western Baghdad, a civilian was killed and four police officers were wounded when a roadside bomb struck a police patrol. Also in that part of the capital, gunmen killed a doctor while he was on his way to work at Yarmouk Hospital. In southwestern Baghdad's neighborhood of Amil, a roadside bomb killed a civilian and wounded 13 others.

Zark, Jr., exhorts the boyz
(CNN) -- The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq urged his followers to kill at least one American in the next two weeks using a sniper rifle, explosive or "whatever the battle may require," according to an audiotape that aired Thursday on Al-Jazeera. The Arabic news network identified the man on the tape as Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, however CNN was unable to independently verify his identity.

Al-Muhajer took command of the terror network's partner group in Iraq after an American airstrike killed its former leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in June, U.S. officials say. Al-Muhajer, which means "the immigrant," is the pseudonym adopted by Abu Ayyub al-Masri, an Egyptian militant believed to be an expert at making car bombs, U.S. officials say.

"I invite you not to drop your weapons, and don't let your souls or your enemies rest until each one of you kills at least one American within a period that does not exceed 15 days with a sniper's gunshot or incendiary devices or Molotov cocktail or a suicide car bomb -- whatever the battle may require," the speaker says on the tape. The recording is more sophisticated than past tapes released by al Qaeda in Iraq and includes sound effects such as a lion's roar, machine gun fire and a sword being unsheathed. Producers at times used echo effects on al-Muhajer's voice and included snippets of inspirational songs and verses from the Quran.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Missing Israeli airman footage shows up on TV
JERUSALEM (AP) -- TV stations in Lebanon and Israel have broadcast footage of an Israeli airman who disappeared in 1986 after his plane was shot down over Lebanon.

Wednesday night's broadcast showed footage of airman Ron Arad with a bushy beard and long hair and appearing nervous, telling an off-camera interrogator about the subjects he studied during his air force training. An announcer said the film was shot in early 1987.

Arad was captured by a pro-Iranian Shiite Muslim militia, Amal. A reported 1987 prisoner swap deal fell through, and Arad then was moved out of Lebanon, possibly to Iran. (Watch as Arad's brother reacts to hearing the airman's voice for the first time in 20 years -- 2:30)

Terror Networks
Al-Qa'ida releases film showing Bin Laden with the hijackers
Video footage in which Osama bin Laden is shown meeting some of the hijackers responsible for the 11 September attacks on New York and Washington was aired last night on al-Jazeera television. In the film Bin Laden is seen sitting with Mohammed Atef, a former lieutenant, and Ramzi Binalshibh, another suspected planner of the suicide hijackings. Bin Laden is also shown greeting several of what the tape said were the hijackers.

The film, produced by As-Sahab, al-Qa'ida's media branch, was released as George Bush, for the fourth time in just eight days, tried to focus the country on his handling of the "war on terror", insisting that his administration had made the US far safer in the five years since the 11 September terror attacks. "We have waged an unprecedented campaign against terrorism at home and abroad and that campaign has succeeded in protecting the homeland," Mr Bush said in Atlanta, Georgia, four days before the anniversary of the 2001 attacks. His latest speech came less than 24 hours after his surprise announcement of the transfer of 14 suspected terrorists from secret CIA prisons to the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba.

One of those suspects, Ramzi Binalshibh, appeared in the footage shown on al-Jazeera last night. Binalshibh was captured four years ago in Pakistan and is being held in US custody. Atef, also known as Abu Hafs al-Masri, was killed in an attack by the US in Afghanistan in 2001. The video shows Bin Laden dressed in a dark robe and white head gear walking outdoors in a mountainous area. Al-Jazeera did not say how it obtained the video. The station has screened numerous films airing Bin Laden and other al-Qa'ida supporters' views.

#2  Wait a minute, I thought that Muslims couldn't do this kind of thing! I thought that Bush and Rove had cooked this up fifteen years before, and were trying to frame the innocent, Allah-loving religion of Islam as a pretext for their global war of imperialism on behalf of Halliburton!

It is this sort of cognitive dissonance that permits Islam every imaginable atrocity and horror in its quest for ascendancy as the so-called Religion of Peace [spit].

#5  What's also great about this is Taranto's write up of all the connections b/w Binalshibh, and KSM and others in OTHER foiled attacks on our homeland. And, they're just 2 of the last 14 or so the Prez mentioned by name to be shifted to Gitmo from these "secret" CIA camps. Now that's it's all out in the open, and legislation is pending to make these goons go through the Supremes loopholes normally reserved for US citizens (military tribunals), it should be fun to watch how the Donks say that Binalshibh and KSM deserve "human rights" that we Americans do. In fact, Taranto had a link that through our "torturous" interrogations of these goons, we not only stopped another 9/11 type attack (by planes) using JI goons, but that we also had someone in custody already that KSM ratted out on as being an expert in anthrax and other biological weapons. Funny thing was, we did NOT know that, he just assumed we did in his interrogation, and WHAMMY, we possibly stopped AQ from getting biologicals (at least from that one guy). ALL of this needs to be trumpeted from the hilltops of Colorado to the entire nation, but the MSM won't do it. So, I guess Fred and RB will continue to fight the good fight.

Of course, I won't put it past them (Donks) that they'll try and defend these goons (along w/ ACLU and HRW). Now that we KNOW who some of these 14 are, the average American has GOT to understand the importance of doing this in secret, under wraps and even outside of Gitmo, if needed.

Tech note...
You've probably noticed we're being subjected to a pretty continuous DoS attack, probably the way the lefties or Islamists celebrate 9-11. I'll try to keep a close eye on things until they've got it out of their system. We can probably expect to see the troll population increase in the next day or two as well.

#33  Happy Birthday, Fred. Another Virgo here - mine is the 1st. Get to share it with Belsan (yuck!). Also have two children born in September (10th, 25th), and a granddaughter (13th). I'm ALWAYS broke during September... Maybe I can hit the tip jar in October.
