165 insurgents killed in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan - Two battles killed more than 165 Taliban fighters and a U.S.-led coalition soldier in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday as President Hamid Karzai prepared to discuss the escalating violence with President Bush in New York.

One of the clashes began Tuesday when several dozen insurgents attacked a joint coalition-Afghan patrol with machine guns, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades near the Taliban-controlled town of Musa Qala in Helmand province, with Taliban reinforcements flowing in all day, a coalition statement said.
Attacking a coalition-Afghan patrol sounds like a bad idea these days.
The coalition said it returned artillery fire and called in fighter aircraft, killing more than 100 of the Taliban fighters. One coalition soldier was killed and four wounded. The coalition said there were no immediate reports of civilian deaths or injuries.

Taliban militants overran Musa Qala in February, four months after British troops left the town following a contentious peace agreement that handed over security responsibilities to Afghan elders. Musa Qala has been in control of Taliban fighters ever since. Situated in northern Helmand province, Musa Qala and the region around it have seen the heaviest fighting in Afghanistan this year. It is also in the middle of the country's poppy-growing belt.

In neighboring Uruzgan province, more than 80 Taliban fighters attacked a joint Afghan and coalition patrol from bunkers near the village of Kakrak in a six-hour battle Tuesday night, the coalition said. Coalition artillery and air support bombarded Taliban positions, killing more than 65 insurgents, it said. Three civilians were wounded in the crossfire, it said. No Afghan or coalition forces were hurt.
So the scorecard is 165:1. I don't like losing even one of ours, but the Talibunnies can't keep this up.
The battle took place near an area where more than three dozen insurgents were killed as they prepared an ambush six days ago, the coalition said.
...and now, the AP spin.
The huge clashes come as Karzai prepared to meet with Bush in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Bush is seeking assurances that Karzai is dealing with Afghanistan's soaring drug trade and security problems.

Afghan opium poppy cultivation hit a record high this year, fueled by Taliban militants and corrupt government officials, a U.N. report found last month. The country produces nearly all the world's opium, and Taliban insurgents are profiting.

More than 4,500 people have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to an Associated Press count based on figures from Afghan and Western officials. Most were militant but at least 600 civilians were among those killed.

On Tuesday, about 400 villagers blocked a major highway during a protest after two civilians — a father and son — were killed by international forces who were conducting a search operation in the Zhari district of Kandahar province, villagers said. Spokesmen from both NATO and the coalition said they had no reports of any search operations or civilian deaths in Zhari.

Habibullah Jan, a lawmaker from Sanzari village, said NATO forces surrounded the village and killed the father and son. He warned that if international forces continued to target civilians, villagers would turn against them.

In the past week, international forces "arrested innocent villagers from three homes, calling them Taliban. Everyone knows that we don't let the Taliban into our area," said Karim Khan, one of the protesters.
Yeah...everybody.

#2  Here's the deal, at night they stake a female goat out in the kill zone, and come morning jihadis of every stripe are converging on the nervous animal.
Carefully placed snipers and mortar squads beat back the hoards and call in air to help rescue the goat. Fifty cals mow down the scattered jihadis as the rangers cover her sensitive parts and usher her clear of the kill zone.
The great part is you don't even have to train the goats.

#9  Dontcha love how "escalating violence" is usually massive losses for the enemy? The implication is that things are bad. But dead enemy is GOOD (notwithstanding "sophisticated" COIN thinking to which at least lip service is so fashionable today, esp. among some military officers).

As I recall this was a frequent media phenomenon in Iraq - "uptick in violence" "surging attacks" "bold insurgent attacks", etc. - and you'd read down a few paragraphs and see the enemy got waxed, harvested, slaughtered. Pathetic on the part of the editors who shape the narrative ....

NATO soldier, 6 militants killed in Afghanistan violence
Afghan and US-led coalition forces killed six militants allegedly involved in attacks against the troops, while a Canadian soldier in the south was killed as authorities moved to quell a recent spike in insurgency-related violence, officials said on Tuesday.

The Canadian soldier was killed and four others were wounded while on patrol Monday in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said in a statement. It did not give the exact location of the incident.

In Kandahar province, a joint Afghan and coalition operation in Zhari district on Monday targeted militants suspected of planting roadside bombs and launching rocket attacks against NATO and Afghan forces, leaving six suspected insurgents dead, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. In central Wardak province, insurgents attacked Afghan army troops, killing a soldier and wounding five others, the ministry added.

Suicide attacker: Elsewhere, a suicide bomber blew himself up next to the convoy of a border security commander on Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, leaving five policemen dead, the commander said.

The attacker was wearing an explosive vest and riding a motorcycle when he struck the border security convoy in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province near the Pakistan border, said district border security commander Abdul Raziq Khan, who was not hurt. Three other police and a civilian were wounded. A surge in insurgency-related violence has left more than 4,400 people dead, most of them militants, according to an Associated Press tally of figures from Afghan and Western officials.

Bomb maker arrested: In northern Takhar province, police arrested a bomb manufacturer and five other men with suspected links to the Taliban and Al Qaeda after the bomb maker wounded himself as he was planting explosives near the home of a border police commander, said deputy provincial police chief Ziauddin Mamudi. Police arrested the bomb maker as he tried to escape and seized timers and explosives from his home and arrested five other suspects.

In the eastern city of Jalalabad, Nangarhar province police and the intelligence service discovered a car full of explosive powder on Monday, and detonated it in a controlled explosion.

Panamanian police detain six Syrian passengers on flight from Cuba
Six Syrians were detained in Panama on Tuesday after the crew on their flight from Cuba alerted authorities to suspicious behavior. But an aviation official quickly denied police reports that the Syrians tried to open the cockpit door. "This is not a hijacking," said Victor de la Hoz, spokesman for the Panamanian Civil Aviation Authority.

Panama's National Police director, Rolando Mirones, said earlier that the passengers approached the cockpit "apparently with the intention of opening a door." But de la Hoz said the Copa Airlines crew simply notified authorities on the ground that a knife was missing after they served the meal in the first-class cabin, where the Syrians were sitting. He did not say whether the Syrians were suspected of taking the knife.

Bombs found in Mumbai as India cricket team parties
MUMBAI: Police found six unexploded bombs in a Mumbai suburb on Wednesday as thousands celebrated on the streets the return home of India's cricket team after winning the Twenty20 world title.

"These were live, country-made bombs, but not of high intensity," a crime branch official said, asking not to be named. "One person has been arrested in connection with this," he added. Police did not directly link the bombs to the celebrations, but the city was on high alert.

Huge crowds turned out to welcome the team along a 30-kilometres route from the airport to the Wankhede cricket stadium. The crude bombs were found in Andheri and was off the celebration route.

Iraq
Suicide VBEID Attacks in Northern Iraq
May be partially duplicative of the 'Ramadan Attacks' article.

MOSUL, Iraq – A series of four suicide VBIED attacks by al-Qaeda were directed against Iraqis in Ninevah Province and Salahuddin Province, Sept. 26.

In an effort to destabilize the growing security that has taken hold in the northern Iraq region, the first attack, an SVBIED, was directed against the private residence of a prominent sheik in an area of western Iraq near the Syrian border. The sheik, who had spoken out al-Qaeda forces, was wounded in the blast and taken to an area hospital. Six local Iraqis were killed and nine wounded.

A second SVBIED detonated at the new Mosul courthouse which was currently under construction. Three local Iraqi citizens were killed and more than 40 wounded.

Two additional SVBIEDs exploded in Salahuddin Province in the village of Sharqat. One targeted an Iraqi Police convoy and the other detonated near an Iraqi Police station. Two IPs and six Civilians were killed, and approximately 34 were injured Wednesday afternoon. All of the wounded were transported to local hospitals in Irbil, Mosul and Saladin.

“These attacks on the Iraqi people during Ramadan have clearly shown the al-Qaeda in Iraq forces have complete disregard for human life and lack of respect for Iraqi lives,” said Col. Stephen Twitty, commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

"The people of Ninevah Province know that the Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces stand beside them and will work with them for a better future. They clearly see who does not respect their traditions, wishes them violence and suffering, and commits inexcusable acts under the banner of religion which they claim to represent. The Iraqi people will persevere from these attacks, emerge stronger from them; and we will be standing by to lend assistance in whatever way they need it.”

#1  Quietly, some provision might be made with the Sunnis to turn over murderous al-Qaeda held by the US, instead of to the Iraqi government for prosecution. This would be on the condition that the al-Qaeda are both dealt with, and with extreme prejudice, and that the Sunnis notify other Arabs about doing it.

I'm sure there is some way to smite them that would be seen as horrifying in Saudi Arabia.

Boomers Increase Ramadan Activity in Iraq
A suicide truck bomber struck a Sunni tribal leader's house near the Syrian border on Wednesday, killing at least five people in the latest attack by suspected Sunni extremists on provincial officials and tribal figures.

A parked car bomb also exploded near a group of black market gasoline vendors in a town elsewhere in northern Iraq, killing at least five people and wounding seven, police said. Another bomb struck wounded victims as they were being taken to the hospital. The blast from the car bomb was intensified when the barrels of gasoline being sold exploded in the center of Shurqat, 140 miles north of Baghdad, according to the police officials.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida in Iraq, which has warned that it planned a new campaign of violence during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Better hurry up; the month is half gone, and Congress has already moved on to other issues.

A U.S. military spokesman on Wednesday acknowledged an "upturn" in violence in recent days, including suicide attacks on police and tribal leaders presumably by Sunni extremists. "We have seen an upturn in levels of violence in the last few days and so we are continuing our efforts to suppress it and keep the pressure on extremist networks," Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner told reporters.

"We will continue to keep that focus because we know that this is a specific period of time ... that the insurgents will try to increase the levels of violence," he added, referring to the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

Iraqi Military Academy Raided
This is a very odd story. Hope we read more later.
Iraqi Special Operations Forces conducted an operation directed by the Ministry of Defense Sept. 25 at the Iraqi Military Academy – Rustamiyah in Baghdad. The operation was designed to apprehend individuals suspected in the kidnapping and murder of the former commandant, Maj. Gen. Imad, and with the kidnapping of the current commandant, Brig. Gen. Hassan who was subsequently released.
I can't tell if this means they found the kidnapped guy at the academy or not.
The individuals detained allegedly use security personnel to carry out murder, kidnapping, improvised explosive device and explosively formed penetrator attacks, to including providing military equipment and weapons to criminal elements.

“Ministry of Defense action against these criminals demonstrates that the Government of Iraqi is dedicated to establishing security and defeating criminal elements wherever they are in the country,” said Staff Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari, Ministry of Defense spokesman. “Iraqi Security Forces are focused on eliminating criminals from their ranks.”
This is one of two academies in Iraq - the other is in Kurdistan and has a new campus courtesy of the US and a curriculum inspired by West Point. The Baghdad campus was Saddam's commissioning source (and runs more along the lines of the UK's Sandhurst).

Iraqi Security Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain 12 suspected insurgents during four separate raids
In four separate early-morning raids Sept. 24, Iraqi Security Forces, with U.S. Special Forces as advisers, detained twelve suspected insurgents.

During one operation, Iraqi Security Forces conducted a security raid that resulted in the capture of an al-Qaeda in Iraq key leader and four suspected operatives near Tal ‘Afar. While clearing a row of homes in the village of Shaykh Ibrahim, the assault force received small-arms fire from one of the insurgents. The team responded with well-aimed suppressive fire and detained the armed terrorists. The targeted individual is believed to be an international financier with connections to several high-level al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders.

In a separate operation, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained a suspected extremist cell leader and four cell members in Baghdad. The cell is responsible for improvised explosive device and mortar attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces in the Baghdad area.

The detained extremist cell leader in Al Baya’a and has allegedly participated in multiple IED attacks resulting in several U.S. Army tactical vehicles destroyed. The group is further linked to more than 10 Katyusha rocket attacks against the International Zone area of Baghdad July 13, 14 and 19. In addition, the group is known for conducting extra judicial killings of Sunni citizens, installing illegal checkpoints and murdering five Sunnis in August.

During the operation, the assault force received small-arms fire. The forces responded with well-aimed and proportional fire and continued on the mission. There were no casualties resulting from this exchange of fire.

In a later raid, members of the 6th Iraqi Army Scouts detained a suspected extremist special group commander in Baghdad who is thought to be responsible for conducting explosively formed penetrator, mortar and IED attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces in Kamaliya and Sadr City.

The group he leads is suspected of conducting extra judicial killings of Sunni citizens, to include a March 22 IED attack and a Dec. 4, 2006 mortar attack against a Coalition installation in Baladiyat.

Another suspected extremist special group cell leader, suspected of establishing an assassination cell and killing an Iraqi Army officer, was detained in Ad Diwaniyah by members of the 8th Iraqi Army Scouts. He is additionally suspected of distributing large weapons caches of EFPs and IEDs to other insurgent cells within Ad Diwaniyah.

Five terrorists killed, 22 suspects detained during operations targeting al-Qaeda
Coalition forces killed five terrorists and detained 22 suspected terrorists Tuesday during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq in central and northern parts of the country.

South of Musayyib, Coalition forces targeted and captured the alleged associate of a senior leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq’s car-bombing network in Baghdad. The suspect is also believed to facilitate the movement of al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders throughout the region. When Coalition forces moved toward the target buildings, they received small arms fire from an armed man. Responding in self-defense, ground forces engaged and wounded him. The injured man was transported to a military medical facility for treatment.
As Coalition forces continued operations, a group of individuals who emerged from the original target building maneuvered toward them. Ground forces called in close air support to engage the hostile threat. The ground forces assessed that four terrorists were killed in the engagement. Moving to another target area, Coalition forces called for a building’s occupants to come out, but they refused to comply. One individual maneuvered toward the ground force and, responding in self-defense, they engaged and killed the terrorist. Seven additional suspected terrorists were detained during the operation.

In an operation in southern Baghdad, Coalition forces captured four suspected terrorists, one is believed to be a close associate to the al-Qaeda in Iraq emir of South Karkh. Intelligence reports indicate the emir is a senior car-bombing facilitator in Baghdad who provides money, vehicles and weapons to numerous car-bombing cells in the southern belt of the city.

In the central part of the country, Coalition forces conducted three operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq key operatives and captured five suspected terrorists. Two of the suspects are believed to be involved in attacks against Coalition forces.

Farther north in Bayji, Coalition forces captured three suspected terrorists during operations targeting an associate to al-Qaeda in Iraq responsible for coordinating terrorists meetings in the Tigris River Valley. During the operation, a woman and a child were injured, treated on site and then transported to a military medical facility for further treatment.

In Mosul, Coalition forces conducted a precision operation targeting an associate of the emir of al-Qaeda in northwestern Iraq and captured two suspected terrorists. One of the individuals is believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq attack cell leader and is suspected of being responsible for transporting al-Qaeda senior leaders in and out of Iraq. “We will continue to dismantle the terrorist networks that threaten the security of Iraq and our forces,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “The people of Iraq have chosen their future; Iraqi and Coalition forces will ensure al-Qaeda in Iraq stays out of their way.”

Three terrorists killed, 2 suspects detained
Coalition Forces killed three terrorists and detained two other suspected terrorists during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders in Musayyib Tuesday. Recent intelligence revealed the location of a known al-Qaeda meeting place. Reporting indicated that several suspected al-Qaeda terrorists with ties to senior leadership were present and supporting aircraft struck the building. Following the strike, ground forces found weapons, including one suicide vest and safely destroyed them on site. Iraqi and Coalition security forces have successfully captured or killed several senior and mid-level al-Qaeda operatives in recent weeks including Rafid Latif Jasim Muhammed Sabah, also known as Abu Taghrid or Abu Azar, who was killed in an operation Sept 21. Taghrid was a key leader in the organization of al-Qaeda in Iraq’s Baghdad military and car-bombing operations.

Al-Qaida in Iraq claims responsiblity for suicide bombing
A Sunni insurgent coalition led by al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a suicide bombing that hit a US-promoted reconciliation meeting of Shiite and Sunni tribal sheiks, killing 15 people. Hamas: 4 Militants Killed, (Surprise…surprise) Blames Israel
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- An explosion went off Wednesday in a jeep carrying four Gaza terrorists militants, killing all of them, Hamas said. The identity of the victims was not immediately known. Hamas initially said the dead were members of the Islamic terrorist militant group, but later said they might belong to another group of terrorists armed faction.
“Because, it’s so difficult to determine these things lately”
The jeep was driving in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City at the time of the blast. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
“Because, it’s so difficult to determine these things lately”
Hamas said Israel had targeted the jeep in an airstrike. Israeli army officials said they had no immediate information about Wednesday's blast. Israel has repeatedly targeted Palestinian terrorists militants in airstrikes, often in response to rocket attacks on Israel.

Gaza: Christian-Muslim tensions heat up
An attack on an 80-year-old Christian woman in Gaza City has triggered renewed fears among the Gaza Strip's 2,500-strong Christian community. Claire Farah Tarazi was the latest victim of anti-Christian attacks that have increased in the Gaza Strip since Hamas took full control of the area in June.

Leaders of the Christian community condemned the assault and appealed to Hamas to make an effort to protect Christians.

Tarazi said a masked man dressed in black clothes had knocked on her door late at night and demanded all her money. "He was carrying a club and a sharp tool," she said. "As soon as I opened the door, he pushed me inside and shouted: 'Where is the money, you infidel?' I shouted back: 'I'm not an infidel - I'm a proud Palestinian Arab.'"

Tarazi said the assailant had beaten her on her hands with the club, demanding that she hand over all her money and jewelry.

"I was so terrified that I gave him two golden bracelets, a cellphone and a few hundred shekels. But the man said this was not enough and hit me hard on the head with a tool he was carrying until I started bleeding." He then locked her in her bedroom and started searching the house for money and valuable items, she added. "After he left the house, I managed to open another door into the bedroom he hadn't noticed. Then I went to the neighbors and asked for help."

Tarazi's relatives told The Jerusalem Post it was evident that she had been targeted because of her faith.

"The fact that the attacker called her an infidel speaks for itself," one of them said. "He clearly knew that this was a Christian woman living alone. He would not have dared to do the same thing to a Muslim woman."

Representatives of various women's groups in the Gaza Strip who visited Tarazi expressed shock and called on the Hamas government to halt attacks on Christians. They expressed concern over increased attacks on Christians in light of the absence of law and order in the Gaza Strip.

The assault on the elderly Christian woman is the latest in a series of attacks against Christians over the past few months. Since the Hamas takeover, a Christian school and a church have been targeted by Muslims.

Father Manuel Musalam, leader of the small Latin community in the Gaza Strip, said masked gunmen torched and looted the Rosary Sisters School and the Latin Church.

"The masked gunmen used rocket-propelled grenades to storm the main entrances of the school and church," he said. "Then they destroyed almost everything inside, including the cross, the holy book, computers and other equipment."

Musalam expressed outrage over the burning of copies of the Bible, adding that the gunmen destroyed all the crosses inside the church and school. "Those who did these awful things have no respect for Christian-Muslim relations," he said.

Musalam estimated damages at more than $500,000. "Those who see the destruction will realize how bad this attack was," he said. "Christians have been living in peace and security with Muslims for many years, but those who attacked us are trying to sabotage this relationship."

#5  Notice that this is in the Jerusalem Post. It just doesn't show up most anywhere else.

I'd bet that most Christians, of all persuasions, don't even know this is happening. And what irks me is that those who know bits and pieces of it blame Israel's policies. The fact is, and has been, that this is not political. It's religious.

#7  I'd bet that most Christians, of all persuasions, don't even know this is happening.

And I'd wager a tidy sum that you're right. Christianity had better wake up damn fast if it wants to survive. While Pope Benedict has made note of Islam's iniquity, his has largely been a voice in the wilderness compared to the thundering denunciation that is called for.

Much like the deafening silence of "moderate" Muslims, Christianity's own mute response to Islam's assault upon all other faiths will soon begin to condemn it for inaction. The ever-powerful Catholic Church would be well-advised to use its great office in seeking an inter-faith alliance with all other peaceful religions so that a united front can be erected against Islam's predations. Anything less will eventually become a betrayal of self and others in the face of Muslim desecration.

Christ works quietly. That is the power of Christianity. Little did anyone know of dozens of Korean Christians in Afghanistan until the recent hostage situation. However, if you want to see a powerful example of Christians at work against Islamist extremists, look at 150,000 American troops (many, many of which are valiant Christian military soldiers) taking out the thugs, as Psalm 91 said they would.

In otherwords, no fear, God IS with us.

And little do we know just how many of our soldiers are going to be murdered by weapons bought with the $2,000,000 ransom that "Christian" South Korea paid to our Taliban enemies. Better that we had blown the terrorists and their idiot hostages straight to hell.

#13  Korea denied paying 2 Million in ransom.

And the Taliban just magically allowed their hostages to go free? If you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

It is un-Christian to kill women.

So is it also "un-Christian" to finance terrorism. Try to keep in mind that Islamic terrorists are killing Christians around the world on a daily basis. Some two dozen Koreans foolish idiotic enough to enter a Muslim-ruled country hardly count against the hundreds being killed each week or month. $2,000,000 is going to help kill a lot more than 20 soldiers, many of whom will likely be Christians themselves. Better that the 20 Koreans were left to the mercy of their captors than finance another entire season of terrorism in Afghanistan.

From this point on we'll call you 'Waco', Zenster.

Please don't burden yourself by recalling that—however botched the Waco raid might have been—there was still historical evidence that David Koresh was sexually abusing children in the compound. Perish the thought. You'll have to come up with something a whole lot better than that if you want to insult me.

Q: Guess who finally quit smoking?

A: David Koresh!

Lebanon indicts 11 terrorists from Fatah al-Islam
Lebanese state prosecutor charged eleven members suspected of belonging to the Fatah al-Islam militia with murder and terrorism. Saeed Mirza said that the defendants, seven of them in preventive detention, were charged in connection with the murder of several Lebanese army soldiers who were killed during a 15-week standoff with the Al-Qaida-inspired militants that ended on September 2. More than 400 people died in the battles at the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared, in northern Lebanon, including 167 soldiers.

A total 297 members of Fatah al-Islam have been charged in connection with the fighting since August. The suspects charged on Monday are accused of terrorist acts, threatening the state as well as its civil and military institutions, and firing on soldiers, civilians and interior ministry forces, according to the charge sheet.

Mirza said he was seeking arrest warrants for the 11 men who are of various Arab nationalities. The prosecutor in August filed charges against 227 militants, including the head of Fatah al-Islam Shaker al-Abssi, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Charges were also filed last week against 59 others.

Lebanon's presidential election adjourned till October 23
Lebanon 's House Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned Tuesday's crucial parliamentary session to elect a new president till October 23. "The session has been adjourned till October 23 at 10:00 am," deputy Speaker Farid Makari announced. The announcement was made by a parliamentary official in the chamber after the bell rang three times to call the lawmakers into session.

In a clear message to the opposition, MPs from the ruling majority said if there was no quorum and no vote on Tuesday, they would go ahead and elect a president with a simple majority when the next session convenes. "We are taking part in today's session to preserve our right to vote in a subsequent session with a simple majority," MP Elias Atallah told reporters before entering parliament. "Our presence means that the first session has been convened, and the next session (there will be a vote) with a simple majority," MP Samir Franjieh said.

The majority attended but opposition members who had gathered in the building stayed in the hallways. The postponement had been expected after the opposition, led by Syrian- and Iranian-backed Hizbullah, vowed to boycott the session to block the ruling March 14 alliance from electing a president from its own ranks.

Germans reveal bomb details
FUSES intended for use in a suspected plot to bomb US installations in Germany came from Syria through Turkey, the German interior minister said yesterday. Wolfgang Schaeuble said the three suspects had received an order from Pakistan to act by mid-September.

German security officials were also monitoring three men who had trained in a Pakistan camp for militants, but lacked the evidence to arrest them, Mr Schaeuble said.

The threat from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic Jihad Union, which claimed responsibility for the plot, has not been eliminated, he said.

US installations remain a potential target.
The threat from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic Jihad Union, which claimed responsibility for the plot, has not been eliminated, he said. US installations remained a potential target.

Mr Schaeuble was in Washington for security talks with Bush administration officials and congressional leaders. "We know that fuses for these bombs ... came from Syria via Turkey to Germany," he said. "We know there are connections. We know that there is a clear network. The demand came from Pakistan (that) it's time to take action in the first half of September," he said.

Mr Schaeuble reiterated his call for an overhaul of international law and for common transatlantic security policies. He cited frustration with the issue of two German citizens and a permanent resident who were arrested in Pakistan after training in a militant camp. The three were returned to Germany, but authorities lacked a basis to detain them. "Now we have to watch them," he said.

After a long debate over whether to punish the "intentions" of a terrorism suspect, Germany is likely to outlaw training in militant tactics such as bomb-building, Mr Schaeuble predicted.

Student Gunman Arrested At St. John's
A psycho campus copycat? Or is Omesh a non-Christian, non-Hindu psycho? Omesh kinda, sorta sounds like a name that might belong to a member of the RoP (and they're pretty common down around Trinidad & Guyana - remember the guys that wanted to blow up the fuel lines to JFK Airport?)

NEW YORK -- A St. John's University student with a suspected history of mental problems was arrested on the Queens campus with a rifle and a Halloween-style mask, possibly of President Bush, police said Wednesday.

Police sources said the suspect, Omesh Hiraman, 23, told police that he was acting alone and walked across campus with the gun. Hiraman did not give any reason why.

A campus security officer, a student and a cadet taking courses at Queens’s campus tackled Hiraman. Police sources said Hiraman was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, camouflage pants, and the mask.

Nobody was hurt but the campus went into lockdown in mid afternoon as students furiously sent text messages to each other and their parents about the gunman, law enforcement sources said.

Hiraman had been carrying the weapon in a bag, according to a posting on the St. John's University website. Police sources said the gun was a front-loading, .40-caliber Wolf rifle.

Police searched Hiraman's dormitory and investigated whether he might have stopped taking his medications, according to a law enforcement source.

Police said Hiraman was wearing a costume mask that appeared to be of President Bush. Officials said he cut the mask off below the eyes.

Police launched a massive response, sending in heavily armed emergency service units and flying a police helicopter overhead the campus of the Catholic University on Union Turnpike in Jamaica.

St. John's had recently upgraded its security and communications systems and was sending warning messages about the gunman at 2:30 p.m. Classes were canceled and the university was in complete lock down.

The St. John's University Web site issued this advisory:

"A male with a rifle in a bag was apprehended on St. John's Queens campus today. Public Safety officers quickly disarmed the suspect and have turned him over to NYPD. Additional information will be forthcoming as it becomes available."

A press release from St. John's read: "At this time, the NYPD has a heavy presence on the Queens campus and are conducting an extensive and thorough search of all buildings and facilities. Students have been instructed to stay inside their classrooms and buildings until further notice."

Investigators searched Hirman’s parents’ East Elmhurst Home Wednesday.

#3  Police say an off-duty police cadet who attends the university, Christopher Benson, 21, saw Hiraman wearing the mask and a black hoodie walk past at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Benson noticed the suspect was carrying a black plastic bag with what appeared to be a rifle sticking out, and contacted police.

Benson followed Hiraman to Marillac Hall, police say, where a university guard who was responding to calls of a suspicious male grabbed the rifle from Hiraman after a struggle. The weapon was a Wolf, .50 caliber breech-loading black powder rifle.

Benson searched Hiraman, while additional St. John's security restrained him, police say. Responding officers then arrested Hiraman.

Hmmmmmmm. Cadet Benson just might have a decent future in law enforcement...

#5  Updated details, via Drudge:

Police sources said Hiraman has a history of mental illness and had been hospitalized in the past. Investigators believe he was off his medication at the time of this incident. University officials told police a preliminary records check does not indicate they were aware of Hiraman's history, investigators said.

Investigators said the weapon was loaded with one round but no additional rounds were on him at the time of his arrest. Police sources said the gun was a front-loading, .40-or .50-caliber Wolf rifle.
