AFGHANISTAN'S Taliban militia shot dead five policemen they had abducted two months ago and strung up their bodies in trees in a village, a provincial police chief said.
Alerted to the bodies on display, police went today to the area in Uruzgan province and killed two rebels in a firefight, provincial police chief Juma Gul Himat said. The officers had been captured in Dihrawood district, where they were also hanged, he said.
The extremist Taliban have executed several Afghans who work with the administration and its international allies, putting their bodies on display as an example to others.

KANDAHAR - An operation involving Afghan and Canadian soldiers in southern Afghanistan has killed or wounded around 100 Taleban, the provinces police chief said on Sunday. The operation, which was launched Saturday in Kandahar province, has also cost the lives of two Canadian soldiers and their interpreter, as well as an Afghan soldier, in deaths that have already been announced.
Our information from the area says that 100 Taleban have been killed and wounded, Kandahar police chief Sayed Agha Saqeb told AFP. Twenty-five Taleban have been buried in one location. Air strikes had been called in against the rebels during the fighting in Zahri district, he said.
The police chief had no breakdown for his toll, which could not be checked independently.
A Canadian military spokeswoman, Captain Catherine Larose, confirmed that Canadian troops were involved in raids on Zahri, which is about 30 kilometres (20 miles) west of Kandahar city. The two Canadian men killed Saturday with their interpreter by a bomb were involved in the operation, she said.

The district by district takeovers in Pakistan seem to indicate that the Pakistani Taliban is pushing for a countrywide takeover a la their Afghan counterparts in Taliban-era Afghanistan. If so, I can understand why Musharraf is finally sending regular army units in place of the failed paramilitary forces that preceded them. I think the Pakistani Taliban are forgetting that the Afghan Taliban won only because Pakistani logistics and advisers were backing them up. Now that they're going up against the Pakistani government, Pakistani logistics and military men will be acting against them instead of in their favor.

I hope there's a strong back-up force along the Afghan-Pak border, shooting any armed men trying to cross it. I think we should also help Perv out by deploying a half-dozen armed Predators. I'd certainly love to hear tha Zawahiri and "mullah" Omar received a Hellfire, special delivery.

MIR ALI: The widow of tribal journalist Hayatullah Khan was killed on Saturday in a bomb blast at her home in North Waziristan, while her children were unhurt, the family said.

A bomb went off close to a boundary wall of her room killing her instantly, Ehsanullah Khan, brother of late Hayatullah Khan, told Daily Times. She was sleeping on the ground in her room and the five children were in another room when the bomb planted right next to the boundary wall of her room went off, he said. The incident took place at around 3am on Saturday in Hurmuz village, according to the family. Ehsanullah told the BBC that the people who had killed Hayatullah were responsible for the Saturday incident.

PARACHINAR: At least 30 people were reported killed and another 130 wounded in sectarian festivities violence in Parachinar city of Kurram Agency on Saturday, locals and hospital sources said.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives as American soldiers were handing out toys to children northeast of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least three children and three of the troopers, U.S. and Iraqi authorities said.Seven children were wounded in the attack in Baqouba, where U.S. soldiers wrested control from al-Qaida in Iraq last summer.
The attack, along with a series of other blasts in the capital and to the north, underlined the uncertainty of security in Iraq even as the American military said overall violence is down 55 percent since a troop buildup began this year.
Police said the attack occurred as U.S. soldiers were handing out toys, sports equipment and other treats in a playground near Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 18 -- As U.S. officials on Sunday declared a 55 percent drop in attacks since the launch of an offensive nine months ago, bombs detonated across Iraq, killing at least 15 and highlighting Iraq's continuing security threats. The casualties included three children playing soccer, when a roadside bomb detonated in a playground near Baqubah, 40 miles northeast of Baghdad. BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition forces detained 27 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. Coalition forces captured three wanted individuals during operations in Baghdad while targeting foreign terrorist and weapons facilitators. Reports indicate al-Qaeda in Iraq members were trying to establish a foreign terrorist network in the city. Ma'an The Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) claimed responsibility for launching a homemade projectile at a kibbutz south of the Israeli town of Sderot on Saturday. The fighters launched the projectile from the Gaza Strip at 8:30am. The brigades said the attack came in response to crimes committed by the Israeli military against Palestinians.

Ma'an A unit of the Al-Aqsa Birgades calling themselves the Army of Al-Barak have claimed responsibility for launching a homemade projectile at the Israeli town of Kfar Aza, east of the Gaza Strip on Friday.
The Al-Aqsa brigades are the military wing of Fatah, the political party affiliated with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas. The group said the attack was a response to Israeli crimes committed against Palestinians, and apparent attempts by Israeli groups to seize the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam.

I'd like to see Israel just crush the hell out of Gaza, and then return to the fence line. Pound the entire area for a month with artillery, aircraft, tanks, and machine guns. Don't let anything or anyone in or out. Let the Gazans take care of their wounded and dead. Make sure UNHCR is on the target list. Then tell Abbas he's next, unless he learns to live in peace with an Israeli Jewish state. He'll either get the message, or Israel can retake the West Bank - this time permanently.

[Thailand's] Fourth Army has backed down and reversed its six-month ban on 384 Muslim men suspected of being involved in the terrorist separatist insurgency from re-entering the four jihad violence-plagued southern provinces, in exchange for only a written promise to cooperate against terror cells violent gangs.
According to a letter to Surat Thani governor Winai Buapradit, Fourth Army chief Lt-Gen Wiroj Buacharoon said the ban was lifted for the sake of the Dec 23 election and the annual haj pilgrimage to Mecca. As Thai citizens, those who were banned from re-entering the restive southern provinces should be allowed to exercise their voting rights and go on their spiritual pilgrimage to the holy city in Saudi Arabia, he said. This was seen as a face-saving excuse for a military backdown over the banishment order. There was no indication any of the men intended to go to Mecca. They had argued earlier they had no money and could not exist outside their home provinces.
Some 384 people were on the list of suspected terror insurgent sympathisers banned from returning to the far South. The men were forcibly taken to military training camps earlier this year after the authorities did not have enough evidence to charge them. They were originally detained for suspected involvement in the terrorist separatist movement, either actively or as sympathisers. The army put them in three military camps - in Chumphon, Ranong and Surat Thani - under a four-month vocational training programme.

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, November 13) a series of explosions rocked Parchin Military Site (where missiles, including Cruise missiles, are manufactured) in southern Tehran. As a result, several military personnel of the site were injured.
The explosions reportedly started in missile industries section of the Site. When shrapnel of the explosions hit another sections, eight other warehouses located next to each other were engulfed in flames.
The fire, which began at 2:00 p.m. and was put out at 8:00 p.m., was so extensive that fire fighters from seven fire stations rushed to the scene. Four of the injured were Mostafa Nourizadeh, Alireza Verdi-lou, Nasser Rezai, and Morteza Motahari. For some reason I have a picture in my head of Donald Rumsfeld doing a Monty Burns imitation.

Doesn't sound too bad. We have fires worse than that in my own town. It was a 7 alarm that took 6 hours to put out. Good sized fire but not anything particularly huge.
